We are living in fast-moving times. Speed has become the main factor in life around the world. Expectations, requirements, values and attitudes seem to be changing as fast as the dictates of fashion. More and more, the very foundation of life are being called into question and the unknown is becoming the new normality. This is the world in which children and youngsters must now grow up, the world that shapes their search for identity, for a place on the labour market and in society in general.
Centers are involved in running a number of projects, which help improve both individually as well as collectively the economic and vocational perspectives within local communities. At the same time, the clientele are expected to make an active contribution to the programmes so as to avoid long-term dependency. do fundraisings :
All fundraisers need to have a firm plan set in place before the fundraising begins. By following this fundraiser planning guide your fundraiser will have a higher successes rate.
First thing to set is the dates for your fundraiser. Your fundraiser must have a beginning, middle and an end. If you find that your fundraiser has not made the money you were hoping for do not extend the end date. Your donor pool needs to know when the end is and what to expect.
Second is to plan your ending. If you are to hold an event to culminate the end of your fundraiser plan in advance. You want to ensure that no other organization is holding an event on the same day.
Third is to keep your budget in mind. You must have a clear cut budget in mind for your fundraiser. You can hold successful fundraisers with a limited budget you simply must plan for this and stick to your budget.
Forth is to set up a fundraising committee. You must have people that are in charge of organizing, running and managing your fundraiser. Committees work best when they are limited to 4 to 8 people.
Fifth is to create a timeline. By setting up a timeline you will be ensured that your fundraiser will run smoothly and on time.
Sixth check on a regular basis that all is running smoothly. You want your volunteers to stay on task and to get there assigned task accomplished in a timely manner.
Seventh be prepared to offer help to your volunteers. This can be a tricky task if your volunteer is not performing properly. You do not want to offend a volunteer but you do need to make sure that your fundraising work is getting done.
Eighth is to advertise your fundraiser. Let the community know that you are planning a fundraiser. Give them all the details they need such as date, time and duration.
Ninth after your fundraiser is over conduct an evaluation of the fundraiser. You will want to know if it worked, did it raise money and how did your volunteers feel about the fundraiser?
Now is the time to start thinking about your next fundraiser. While all these tips are fresh in your mind start looking into your next event and remember to always have fun with your fundraiser

You suggested posting questions/comments on the project plan under the Project Room section so here goes...
Firstly, I like this project - the fact that it is aiming to make the families self-sufficient and not keep them dependent on the outside world. Eric, from reading the doc, your organisation looks like it is well organised with a clear idea of what it wants to do.
These questions occur to me as I read the plan... which means, if you are planning to send something similar to potential donors, they may have similar ones... and probably more which have not occurred to me...
I realise that in many cases organisations may not actually see this doc, rather it will be the basis for filling in their own application forms, or reformatted to meet their requirements.
1. Document refers to budget for year three but there are no figures
2. Also refers to contribution by Kabondo, but does not give details. Is this financial or other contribution?
3. Giving families loans to set up businesses. Has the repayment process/timescale been agreed, including what to do if they are unable to repay for some reason?
4. What happens to that money once repaid to Kabondo org - is the plan to set up a continuing micro credit scheme to help other families, or will it go back into general Kabondo funds?
5. Has work been done to work out how much income families are likely to make from their small businesses and whether this will cover long term support of the children i.e. no more external financial support required once business is fully up and running? Plan talks about budget for support for children for two years - assume this is just to be on the safe side?
6. Am slightly confused - will all families keep goats, or only some i.e. will they have the freedom to choose what sort of small business they run, based on their skills/interests and local market?
7. "Families/guardians will be encouraged to save with the community part of their income from those activities". Is there already an organised savings schmem in the area or is this something Kabondo will need to set up, do they have skills to do this?
8. will training include knowledge in how to keep animals?
9. Some organisations may want to know of any successful projects that Kabondo are running now or have run in the past.
10. "Currency 1 KShs = 90 Euros". you have your exchange rate round the wrong way!
11. Details of Kabondo as a registered organisation. Barb, I know you are already working to add that.
Oh, and it could do with a spell-check... ORRPHANS!
I realise some of these may be considered irrelevant. Others may have be answered elsewhere, but I have had a look around and can't find anything
You may find that some organisations are only prepared to support certain parts of the project e.g. won't pay school fees. In that case is there the possibility of applying to different places for different things? Others may be prepared to offer less money than the full budget - would you be prepared to start on a smaller scale if that was the case, maybe then looking for additinal funding from elsewhere?

From September until December 2007 this Villages was featured amongst others. The purpose of featuring these Villages was to find out how Villages on NABUUR could get results quicker and more predictably.
[b]Results[/b]
Most of the Featured Villages experienced an influx of Neighbours by being featured. The majority of the Local Representatives was happy with the increased activity in their Village. Though in most cases the defined results were only partially achieved. Reasons for that were according to some Local Representatives that their goals were too ambitious, others found out their goals had to be redefined. Results that depend on finding (larger amounts of) funds are most difficult to achieve.
[b]Predictably[/b]
Based on the feedback of the Local Representatives, the following conditions seem to be good indicators for success:
- To achieve results a project should have a clear focus and small, concrete steps;
- There should be a local team in place;
- Specific activities attract more volunteers than planning issues;
- Finding funding or sponsors is still a difficult issue that many villages encounter;
- Being featured attracts Neighbours but visible community involvement is crucial;
- Regular discussions and updates are necessary to maintain an active group.
Because featuring of villages seem to be a useful tool, there will be another round. This time the focus will be on defining the project with a clear focus and small, concrete steps.
The lessons learned are input for the redesign of the NABUUR website.

Would it be a good idea to put an obvious link to this on Nabuur too (maybe on the Our Project page)? That way people wishing to donate money would know this is one way of doing it.
Do you get the money from GiveMeaning as it is donated, or do you have to wait until the full amount is raised?
Another quick question (sorry, I have a reputation for asking questions!!!), is anything happening with the ideas Eric had for helping the families to make money for themselves

Here is how the fund dispersement works:
"As mentioned prior to the activation of your Project, we've allowed tax receipting for donations to your Project on the basis that you would be able to raise at least 50% of your stated goal (or a minimum of $1500) before we approach a charitable organization that can implement your Project.
If you don't raise a minimum of $1500, we cannot approach a charity on your behalf. Because these funds have been tax receipted, they cannot be passed on to a non-registered organization.
In this situation, there are three options:
1) You can find a qualified partner organization on your own that will accept your funds and send them to your intended Project
2) You can identify another charitable organization doing similar work that will receive the funds for their own Projects
3) Each donation can be returned to the donor's GiveMeaning account for allocation to another Project on the site."
For projects that are not tax-receipted, such as Kyomya and Busukuma, they have to raise a minimum of $500.
And to answer you last question:

Yes we would like to proceed with these ideas, but are working on one item at a time. The community wants to focus on addressing some of the orphans' immediate needs first and then go from there. I think since we are making great strides relating to blankets and sanitary napkins, we should be able to move forward on income generation fairly soon.

As to the link, if its possible I would say just put a simple text link into the text at the top of the Our Project page (and maybe other pages), then add a fancy logo if Nabuur HQ can tell you how. Good to see Kabondo featured in the news item on Nabuur home page!
One thing at a time sounds good too. I was asking as enabling the families to support themselves is the long-term solution.
One thought which I (or someone) may have mentioned before but I can't remember... Do all/most of the children supported by Eric's organisation go to the same school or church etc? If so, I am wondering about the possibility of linking them up with one in another country - needing blankets, school equipment etc is something that other children can relate to easily, so may be a way of finding items/raising funds for the orphans. Also of helping the kids in Kabondo to make friends with others in the wider world. I have to admit that I don't really have the right contacts to set this up but other neighbours may do.

I'll look into putting the link to GiveMeaning. I am also trying in my city, to raise awareness and reach our goal. I have submitted a story idea to a local newspaper, but they haven't got back to me yet. I am also looking into some other options and ideas. We made a very quick brochure for Kabondo to use as a handout when I do things here. It has the GiveMeaning website on it. I hope to use it at some small fundraising activities.
Regarding connecting with other schools. I will have to check with Eric to see about the location of the children. I have never asked if they all go to the same school. I just assumed they did as it is a small community. Yes, I think some others have mentioned this idea. I would like to connect with my son's school, but there is a process to go through to be allowed to engage in these type of activities and to collect funds. Maybe it is different elsewhere. I think the key is having a contact at a school and then to convince them that there will be benefits to the students on both ends.
On my list of to-do things, but maybe some other neighbours can assist with this? Will have to check with Eric, of course to see if this is a course of action the community will agree to.

We are living in fast-moving times. Speed has become the main factor in life around the world. Expectations, requirements, values and attitudes seem to be changing as fast as the dictates of fashion. More and more, the very foundation of life are being called into question and the unknown is becoming the new normality. This is the world in which children and youngsters must now grow up, the world that shapes their search for identity, for a place on the labour market and in society in general.
Centers are involved in running a number of projects, which help improve both individually as well as collectively the economic and vocational perspectives within local communities. At the same time, the clientele are expected to make an active contribution to the programmes so as to avoid long-term dependency. do fundraisings :
All fundraisers need to have a firm plan set in place before the fundraising begins. By following this fundraiser planning guide your fundraiser will have a higher successes rate.
First thing to set is the dates for your fundraiser. Your fundraiser must have a beginning, middle and an end. If you find that your fundraiser has not made the money you were hoping for do not extend the end date. Your donor pool needs to know when the end is and what to expect.
Second is to plan your ending. If you are to hold an event to culminate the end of your fundraiser plan in advance. You want to ensure that no other organization is holding an event on the same day.
Third is to keep your budget in mind. You must have a clear cut budget in mind for your fundraiser. You can hold successful fundraisers with a limited budget you simply must plan for this and stick to your budget.
Forth is to set up a fundraising committee. You must have people that are in charge of organizing, running and managing your fundraiser. Committees work best when they are limited to 4 to 8 people.
Fifth is to create a timeline. By setting up a timeline you will be ensured that your fundraiser will run smoothly and on time.
Sixth check on a regular basis that all is running smoothly. You want your volunteers to stay on task and to get there assigned task accomplished in a timely manner.
Seventh be prepared to offer help to your volunteers. This can be a tricky task if your volunteer is not performing properly. You do not want to offend a volunteer but you do need to make sure that your fundraising work is getting done.
Eighth is to advertise your fundraiser. Let the community know that you are planning a fundraiser. Give them all the details they need such as date, time and duration.
Ninth after your fundraiser is over conduct an evaluation of the fundraiser. You will want to know if it worked, did it raise money and how did your volunteers feel about the fundraiser?
Now is the time to start thinking about your next fundraiser. While all these tips are fresh in your mind start looking into your next event and remember to always have fun with your fundraiser

You suggested posting questions/comments on the project plan under the Project Room section so here goes...
Firstly, I like this project - the fact that it is aiming to make the families self-sufficient and not keep them dependent on the outside world. Eric, from reading the doc, your organisation looks like it is well organised with a clear idea of what it wants to do.
These questions occur to me as I read the plan... which means, if you are planning to send something similar to potential donors, they may have similar ones... and probably more which have not occurred to me...
I realise that in many cases organisations may not actually see this doc, rather it will be the basis for filling in their own application forms, or reformatted to meet their requirements.
1. Document refers to budget for year three but there are no figures
2. Also refers to contribution by Kabondo, but does not give details. Is this financial or other contribution?
3. Giving families loans to set up businesses. Has the repayment process/timescale been agreed, including what to do if they are unable to repay for some reason?
4. What happens to that money once repaid to Kabondo org - is the plan to set up a continuing micro credit scheme to help other families, or will it go back into general Kabondo funds?
5. Has work been done to work out how much income families are likely to make from their small businesses and whether this will cover long term support of the children i.e. no more external financial support required once business is fully up and running? Plan talks about budget for support for children for two years - assume this is just to be on the safe side?
6. Am slightly confused - will all families keep goats, or only some i.e. will they have the freedom to choose what sort of small business they run, based on their skills/interests and local market?
7. "Families/guardians will be encouraged to save with the community part of their income from those activities". Is there already an organised savings schmem in the area or is this something Kabondo will need to set up, do they have skills to do this?
8. will training include knowledge in how to keep animals?
9. Some organisations may want to know of any successful projects that Kabondo are running now or have run in the past.
10. "Currency 1 KShs = 90 Euros". you have your exchange rate round the wrong way!
11. Details of Kabondo as a registered organisation. Barb, I know you are already working to add that.
Oh, and it could do with a spell-check... ORRPHANS!
I realise some of these may be considered irrelevant. Others may have be answered elsewhere, but I have had a look around and can't find anything
You may find that some organisations are only prepared to support certain parts of the project e.g. won't pay school fees. In that case is there the possibility of applying to different places for different things? Others may be prepared to offer less money than the full budget - would you be prepared to start on a smaller scale if that was the case, maybe then looking for additinal funding from elsewhere?

Dear Neighbours,
From September until December 2007 this Villages was featured amongst others. The purpose of featuring these Villages was to find out how Villages on NABUUR could get results quicker and more predictably.
[b]Results[/b]
Most of the Featured Villages experienced an influx of Neighbours by being featured. The majority of the Local Representatives was happy with the increased activity in their Village. Though in most cases the defined results were only partially achieved. Reasons for that were according to some Local Representatives that their goals were too ambitious, others found out their goals had to be redefined. Results that depend on finding (larger amounts of) funds are most difficult to achieve.
[b]Predictably[/b]
Based on the feedback of the Local Representatives, the following conditions seem to be good indicators for success:
- To achieve results a project should have a clear focus and small, concrete steps;
- There should be a local team in place;
- Specific activities attract more volunteers than planning issues;
- Finding funding or sponsors is still a difficult issue that many villages encounter;
- Being featured attracts Neighbours but visible community involvement is crucial;
- Regular discussions and updates are necessary to maintain an active group.
Because featuring of villages seem to be a useful tool, there will be another round. This time the focus will be on defining the project with a clear focus and small, concrete steps.
The lessons learned are input for the redesign of the NABUUR website.

Just a thought... I know there is a GiveMeaning fundraising page for Kabondo at http://www.givemeaning.com/project/kabondo
Would it be a good idea to put an obvious link to this on Nabuur too (maybe on the Our Project page)? That way people wishing to donate money would know this is one way of doing it.
Do you get the money from GiveMeaning as it is donated, or do you have to wait until the full amount is raised?
Another quick question (sorry, I have a reputation for asking questions!!!), is anything happening with the ideas Eric had for helping the families to make money for themselves

I think it would be great to put an obvious link to GiveMeaning. It would be good to have the logo, but not sure where that would go and I would have to ask James or someone at HQ on the best way to do this.
Here is how the fund dispersement works:
"As mentioned prior to the activation of your Project, we've allowed tax receipting for donations to your Project on the basis that you would be able to raise at least 50% of your stated goal (or a minimum of $1500) before we approach a charitable organization that can implement your Project.
If you don't raise a minimum of $1500, we cannot approach a charity on your behalf. Because these funds have been tax receipted, they cannot be passed on to a non-registered organization.
In this situation, there are three options:
1) You can find a qualified partner organization on your own that will accept your funds and send them to your intended Project
2) You can identify another charitable organization doing similar work that will receive the funds for their own Projects
3) Each donation can be returned to the donor's GiveMeaning account for allocation to another Project on the site."
For projects that are not tax-receipted, such as Kyomya and Busukuma, they have to raise a minimum of $500.
And to answer you last question:

Yes we would like to proceed with these ideas, but are working on one item at a time. The community wants to focus on addressing some of the orphans' immediate needs first and then go from there. I think since we are making great strides relating to blankets and sanitary napkins, we should be able to move forward on income generation fairly soon.

Thanks for the explanation - guess that means Kabondo has a bit of a way to go before it gets money from GiveMeaning, but I do wish you success!
As to the link, if its possible I would say just put a simple text link into the text at the top of the Our Project page (and maybe other pages), then add a fancy logo if Nabuur HQ can tell you how. Good to see Kabondo featured in the news item on Nabuur home page!
One thing at a time sounds good too. I was asking as enabling the families to support themselves is the long-term solution.
One thought which I (or someone) may have mentioned before but I can't remember... Do all/most of the children supported by Eric's organisation go to the same school or church etc? If so, I am wondering about the possibility of linking them up with one in another country - needing blankets, school equipment etc is something that other children can relate to easily, so may be a way of finding items/raising funds for the orphans. Also of helping the kids in Kabondo to make friends with others in the wider world. I have to admit that I don't really have the right contacts to set this up but other neighbours may do.

I'll look into putting the link to GiveMeaning. I am also trying in my city, to raise awareness and reach our goal. I have submitted a story idea to a local newspaper, but they haven't got back to me yet. I am also looking into some other options and ideas. We made a very quick brochure for Kabondo to use as a handout when I do things here. It has the GiveMeaning website on it. I hope to use it at some small fundraising activities.
Regarding connecting with other schools. I will have to check with Eric to see about the location of the children. I have never asked if they all go to the same school. I just assumed they did as it is a small community. Yes, I think some others have mentioned this idea. I would like to connect with my son's school, but there is a process to go through to be allowed to engage in these type of activities and to collect funds. Maybe it is different elsewhere. I think the key is having a contact at a school and then to convince them that there will be benefits to the students on both ends.
On my list of to-do things, but maybe some other neighbours can assist with this? Will have to check with Eric, of course to see if this is a course of action the community will agree to.
