I was in Sabah 5 weeks ago for a long weekend. I am planning to visit KL in the next two months, but nothing is set in stone :)
It is nice to see the local representative so truly involved with the project, it makes all the difference for Nabuur's projects. I will not be of much help before the middle of November,so here is my tiny contribution. I am in touch with a local ( HK based) charity trying to figure out a delivery for Koliyonkulam and I think Sushmita's school should look at the application too. I don't feel comfortable posting the correspondence online, because I do not have the organization's explicit permission to do so, but if you (or any of the other neighbours) are interested to learn more - I would love to share the details about the application process.
I agree with you that it makes so much difference when an LR is present in the development of the online village. I supposed that it speed things up, instead of waiting for the final say.
I totally understand if you can't share detailed information on a public space. However, I'm more than happy if you would like share information on the application process. It's always good to learn something new.
Thank you a lots for your message.
Thanks lots again! for keeping my request! of joining my village, inspite of your very busy! schedule of helping other Nabuur villages.
Thanks again for your concern and support for the school and it's downtroddens.

Best regards,

Unfortunately, Kalna's current facilitator Az'farr will no longer be able to remain as facilitator. However, we're happy he'll stick around the village and help out as a Neighbour - what more can we ask? :)
Sushmita has been informed via email, and we'll do our best to locate a new facilitator very soon. If you are interested, send me an email at romina@nabuur.com
Thank you for the invite to join the village Kalna.
I have recently had a positive interaction with Mulenga at village Garden in Africa, and with Carolyn who is their facilitator at Australia, about the possibility of creating a facility in their library where the children can have access to free e-books through the internet. These books can be read on the computers instead of getting them printed, and this will save the costs of printing etc and hence will be environment friendly. I have suggested them the model of an e-library which comprises of one computer server connected to 10 computer terminals, and only one internet connection which can be connected to the server. This facility can be used by about 100 children daily assuming each child uses one terminal for only one hour at a time.
I understand that Mulenga at village Garden will be taking this matter to the next stage, where the specifications for the computer hardware are to be finalised through an IT professional, and the funds for outright purchase or donations have to be organised. The time frame for completion of this project is expected to be within 6 months.
You may like to read all my posts on this matter through my profile page. In case you feel this can be executed at your village also, you could actively participate with Mulenga at Garden for this project, and examine if the same can be duplicated at your village also. I personally feel that all children should be exposed to computers at an early age, and can choose books out of the millions that are freely available as royalty-free books on the internet.
Further to my previous post as above, the following information shall also be useful :
- Any book is to be downloaded only once from the internet and will be stored in the server hard-disk. Downloading will be done only by the librarian, and not by the children. So downloads from the internet can be controlled to keep expenses low.
- In addition to downloads from the internet, e-books and other learning material can also be transferred from CDs or other storage devices to the server hard-disk, and can be accessed by the children from any terminal. In this case downloads from the internet will not be involved. Hence, efforts can also be made for donations of educational CDs.
The above two methods alone will keep the operating costs of the e-library at negligible levels.
First and foremost, a big thank you to you for providing us with an invaluable list that has given us a good head-start for the projects.
Secondly, a very warm welcome to you!
Warm Regards,
Az'farr :-)
Just a note - Happy Halloween to all those who celebrates it. :D
