Background: Kapuwai

Village facts

  • It was on November 11, 1989 at around 2 pm, many residents of Kapuwai village were trekking to a school football pitch. They were not coming to watch a football match but for a meeting. The elders and students born in the village had called for a meeting to discuss serious problems that were affecting the village.

  • The Village was experiencing high rates of death among infants and women. Most of the conditions were of a preventable nature. However because of a lack of knowledge and organization within the village, these preventable conditions were taking a high toll amongst the villagers.

  • Other surrounding villages were experiencing the same problems and begged to be involved in the project. This was granted by Kapuwai village project committee and the committee expanded to include two members from the joining villages. It was also agreed that the name of the initiative be changed to allow the involvement of other areas who may be interested to join. The name of Pallisa Community Development Trust (PACODET) was agreed on.

  • There are a number of areas that require our attention and need resources.
