Developing poultry and Rabbit Project

In a recent community participatory planning meeting to improve on food availability and income at household levels, local poultry and rabbit keeping were identified as handy resources households could bank on. Women said these resources were easily owned and used by them and children without due inteference from men. Besides they are cheap and can be acquired by any household. These also did not need large land for rearing. However the serious hindrance in depending on them were their vulnerabilty to disease. Poultry needed regular vaccination services which are not present in the village. And women also said they lacked ability to manage especially rabbits. The rabbit diseases, snakes and dogs were a serious problem
We are seeking support from experienced and skilled neighbors help us develop these two resources in our village for improved food and income security at household level. We need to introduce poultry vaccination services to the village and equip households with ways and means of raising rabbits.

Hi Stanley, true, good project there however i only have simple advice for snakes, plant tobacco plants around the area where you are going to keep the poulty and rabbits. Have been advised this by an agricultural officer for such a project. Cant confirm how true it is that it works as am yet to try it myself in 2 weeks when i get back to Uganda. However, i can assure you, my stack of the tobacco seeds is not getting out of my sight as snakes and me have absolutely no love.lol Hope the advice helps.

Thanks Joanne,
The tobacco idea sounds good but may not be accepted in the community. People imagine it may get some youth to abuse it.

Sorry mate, thats all i know, try to tell the youths off as it may be your only cheap and simple alternative. Share more info with me if you find another solution. Best wishes.

Hi Joanne,
We could give it a trail on small scale but we even lack the seeds.

Find out how much they cost in Ug and will see how it goes. Planning on buying more seeds to distribute in future but can buy now and we share. Let me know when u will be in Kampala can ask someone to come with u, and you buy the seeds together. I know they might be available in your area too but then, again our central point is kampala. So take your time as dont want you to spend much transport just for seeds and when u come down to do something else, you can call on me. will send you ma number, and if u are considering coming for the acquaponics training, you may pick them too.

Hi Joanne,
Will let you know when i m in kla. I also need to research on the tobacco seed source. Not available in my area. By the way what is this acquaponics training?
--
Stanley Okurut
Acquaponics is the growing of fish and vegetables at the same time. However, no soil is used as nutrients are got from fish waste. It ensures high yields and some say they grow faster but all can confirm is that one can grow in quarter an acre what would actually be grown in an acre. it is quite an expensive venture thats why during this training they are adapting it to developing countires to make it affordable. Google Acquaponics, you will find out more than i can offer.
