Equipping Health Centre and Nurses Demonstration Class

PACODET is managing a health centre IV. There is basic infrastructure that includes OPD, martenity, antenatl care, and immunisation units and inpatients wards. There is also space for theatre and lab services. This unit is also being used for practicum training for nurses to some extent but lacks basic equipment. In the training side, there is demonstration classroom but also lacks nurses and midwives practical training kits. We are asking niegbhors to brainstorm and come up with speicific actions that lead to equipping of health centre and demonstration training unit.

Hi Stanley
This may be of interest if the hospital has ever considered looking at low cost alternatives to a standard baby incubator.
I originally posted this information to Kayole Soweto village a while ago but according to Bramuel their Local Rep, it probably won't work for their hospital becuase of the government rules they have to follow, but maybe rules are different in Uganda and at least one of these designs has been used in Uganda.
CART - Christian Africa Relief Trust
http://www.cartyorkshire.co.uk/projects.html
"Helping Premature Babies in Tanzania
CART has been involved in a Tanzanian project to make a locally-built, low-tec, low-cost incubator for premature babies. The igh death rathe amongst these babes is a real problem and several hundred of their lives have already been saved by these wonderful devices. We now have 1-5 of them in 11 hospitals in the Kilmanjaro region and they have been copied in Uganda, Malawi and Zambia. If you would like info on this patented solution please email CART."
So I started doing a little digging, and it seems that several groups are working on various low cost designs. I don't know whether the one mentioned by CART is one of these or not.
Fixable Infant Incubator
http://www.appropedia.org/Fixable_Infant_Incubator
"In designing this device, our goal has been to engineer a simple solution to a complex problem in the developing world. Our proposal is to design a safe incubator that will be used in local health centers, be easily assembled, be portable, need minimal operating capabilities and will keep the infant warm and hydrated."
Appears to be still under development, but says they are looking to partner with health agencies around the world, gives contact details.
This is linked with International Development Design Summit http://iddsummit.org/ and D-Lab http://web.mit.edu/d-lab
.
Transformed Toyotas can save lives -- as incubators
http://boston.bizjournals.com/boston/stories/2007/10/08/newscolumn2.html
"Simply put, his group is exploring whether it can take a Toyota motor vehicle, dismantle it and use vital parts that can be reassembled into ... incubators for infants in the developing world."
Also suggests that many hospitals have problems with donated equipment, although I would imagine that depends on how good your power supply is, and how frequently items are maintained.
Run by CIMIT http://www.cimit.org/ and Design That Matters http://designthatmatters.org/portfolio/projects/incubator/ and Medicine Mondiale http://www.medicinemondiale.org/Our%20Projects (which says they hoped to begin production in June 2008 but does not give any further updates)
.
And a slightly different approach based on a low-cost bag to keep babies warm
http://embraceglobal.org
http://embraceglobal.org/main/vision
"Embrace is a thermoregulator designed to save premature and low birth weight babies. Our mission is to help the 20 million vulnerable babies born every year around the world, who can not access traditional incubators that cost up to $20,000."
Initial testing will be in India with the intention to roll out to other countries, does not give dates. Other sites say the cost will be $25.
.
All have contact details on their sites. Unless shown otherwise I don't have any details on the costs involved. Some are also researching low-cost alternatives for other medical equipment as well. If you are interested, maybe one of them would consider using you as a trial/research site.
Mary
Thanks Mary,
This is wonderful information for us. I will contact them. If they can support us we are interested and appropriate technology is what we need in communities like ours that are remote and are not connected to electricity. we update you on progress.

Stanley- that's excellent news!! Are you able to share with us how this good fortune came your way? Did someone approach them or write a proposal? It's good info to share so that others can learn how to look for fudnding opportunities.
Hi Carolyn,
A friend and Volunteer named Polya wrote a proposal and sent to PeproTech on our behalf. As much as the proposal request was big, they offered what they could to help the community forge on ahead.
