Supporting Education of Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC)

Our communities in the recent past suffered from rebel insurgencies and of recent HIV/A[DS has had its toll leaving behind a very impoverised people and many orphans and vulnerable children. The only hope for thess children and community as a whole is in education. In our country today, quality education is becoming a preserve of the rich. Some of our best students can not join good secondary schools because of inability to pay fees. So we totally miss out from the national picture in terms of good training, skills and jobs. So the community is destined to remain in the cycle of poverty. We have an idea of sponsoring six best students gender balanced annually. We would appreciate your support to help us develop a sponsorship plan for our village.

HI Stanley,
does PACODET already have the funds for the scholarship or did you need to first raise these funds?
Also- have you already got an idea of who will receive these scholarships or will there be an application process?
We have no funds for scholarships at the moment. But we want to be a leader in facing this very serious problem of education crippling our community. We need ideas for bailout. Most households today in our community cannot afford to pay for higher education denying opportunity to many brilliant children from gaining better skills and jobs at local and national level. Since we don't have any scholarship funds yet, we have not excited anybody about this. But once we figure a way out, we will advertise this scheme in our community with very clear guideliness and selection process. We would then invite those qualifying to apply and from those select say 4-6 annually as beneficiaries. This platform is letting me think aloud about very serious issues in our community and hope neighbhors could share their experiences that could bail us too.

Hi Stanley,
I commend you for your dedication to educating the children of your community. I agree education is key to battling poverty. Without financial support from many venues, I could not have gone to college.
When my parish began fundraising, we discovered that we needed to show potential contributors our written plan for how we would use the funds before they would consider giving us money.
Do you know of programs that are similar to the one you ?Please let me know and if there aren't any local programs for you to use as a model, I will research for such programs.
Are there local business willing to contribute funds? Also, are there any multinational corporations or nonprofits working in your area that might contribute?
Take care,
Tom
Thanks Tom,
We don't know any programs like the one we are thinking about around. Would appreciate if you could provide us with some model you can lay your hand on. The other thing to bear in mind is that we don;t have specific donors now in our mind but hope that if we can come up with a good plan we could use it to interest potential donors to support.

Stanley, I am happy to hear about you community, I ma just a new comer in Nabuur and already I can see it offers a good learning and sharing pints for communities. My community is in Kumi, in Kapir Village just a next door district from yours. My view is that, what would your community consider the most sustainable way of mmeting fees for the many brilliant children in your community ! How can the house holds be involved in that initiative ? Possibly you need to discuss thsi with the communities and that is the direction we hope to apply, as SUPORT Uganda in addressing many of the community issues.

Have you come across the grants from the American Embassy in Kampala?
Self Help Fund http://kampala.usembassy.gov/self_help.html
Community Grants http://kampala.usembassy.gov/community_grants.html
Applications close 1st April for one, 31st March for the other. Full details of eligibility and application forms are on the website. I am sure there will be LOTS of competition, and it takes a few months to get a decision, but it may be worth a try.
Several of your projects may meet the criteria of one or other of the funds, so was not quite sure which task to post this under!
Mary
Hi Mary,
Thanks, we have already submitted one
