As you are aware for the last 3years our community outreach team have been doing community outreach and they have find out that there is need to combine this services with another called home based care this one will mostly focus on people affected and an-affected with HIV/AIDS this is because our community outreach team research has shown that most of the community are not well informed on the virus.
in order to do this we are looking volunteer who as already has experience on doing this to help our community outreach team leaders on advice on this and or any materials is needed maybe training materials and brochures on HIV/AIDS.
we need your ideas

I was living in Nigeria when I read my first article in the newspaper about AIDS. The man had three wives at home and went to a prostitute. Then infected his wives. Excuse me!!! So sad for his wives/children but I have no simpathy for him.

I am going to say this out straight and I hope you will take in the simple way that it is meant!
If Abstinence was so simple, then you would not have the biggest teenage pregnancy in the world in your own backyard in the States.
I am not here to judge people, I am here to help and I believe you are here to do the same as I know how much good work you have done helping others.
It is easy to impose our personal values on others but it is much much harder and in some ways much much more truly christian to "help without judgement"
As for HIV issues. For the project I am involved with I am in the process of consulting a Fulbright scholar who is a Doctor in medicine who has specialised in HIV containment for infected areas especially for Children, I hope the Scientific information will be useful.
Billions of research money has been spent on Scientifically dealing with HIV. I have also met face-face the Australian Nobel Prize winner who actually won his Nobel prize for identifying parts of the HIV virus.
I like the fact that inspite of their passion for fighting HIV...none of these scientists have Ever been judgemental about people with HIV. Some of them are children and some are just people with very very poor living conditions with no other means of livihood except prostitution!
When I get the scientific information from the relevant researchers, I will be happy to put it on this talk thread.

I don't believe Ken ever said a word about abstinence. He is talking about being faithful which as I am sure you are aware is a big part of the HIV/AIDS awareness programs in Africa. That is not a judgement, that is a fact. In fact in addition to abstinence, being faithful is often cited as one of the most important points of this teaching strategy.
Bramuel-when we discussed the issue many months ago about HIV/AIDS related resources you indicated at that time that the hospital had a good stock of materials to use for teaching. Is that no longer the case? The Ministry of Health may be able to provide you with these, I would also check with NHIF to see if they might have materials you could have access to at reduced or no cost. I will email you some additional information the community health team may find useful.

I apologise if I have misunderstood Ken in anyway. I simply gave my honest feedback. I am not here to tell anyone on earth what to do in their bedrooms, I would like to just help where help is needed especially when HIV kids are involved with scientifically proven containment methods.
Jennifer, The reality in the world is that there are a LOT of judgements about people who have HIV * regardless of how they got it, so I am asking for more "neutral and respectful way of talking about the issue".
Its a dreadful issue especially when prostitutions and children born with HIV are involved. This is the reality of many of the projects involving HIV. I would like us, all of us including myself, to be more sensitive to the hardship people with HIV are going through....starting with the way we talk about them here in open forum.

Solomon, the LR of Furaha (also in Nairobi) was looking for similar information a few weeks ago, so there is quite a lot posted on his village page.
Some of it was specifically focused on deaf people (as they run a centre for the deaf), but there is also plenty of general stuff too. Most of the general links came from Eric in Uganda who has a lot of experience in HIV/AIDS education which he is happy to share with others.
I suggested Solomon should contact you to see if you had education materials he could use, but I have no idea if he did? Maybe the two of you can work together!

I live in a city that has the highest rate of unwed mothers in Texas. Abstinence is the solution compared to unweb births, STDs, AIDS and on and on.
We all make choices and if those choices only affected the choice maker, no problem but that is not true. Choices affects many others; especially the wives and children. It is not being judgemental; look at the proof. Just be prepared to suffer the consequences.

Thank you all of you who his contributing in this issue Jennifer yes we have some materials on HIV/AIDS and what we need most is the approach to make this people understand as you know we are in a slum area where most of this people are ignorant on the issue of HIV/AIDS preventions.

HIV is spread from body fluid transfers. The reason why they are higher amongst some communities is because their activities involve more fluid transfers and sharing of instruments that involves fluid transfer.
Not aimply because they are drug users or homosexuals or whatever! That is not a correct causal assumption!
Safety Facts:
Use of condoms reduces the spread of HIV! Not avoiding sex or homosexuals!
Never sharing a hyperdermic needles in drug use stops the spread of HIV!
HIV is spread from contact with another HIV carrier! This can happen even if you have only ever had one partner! This can happen if you come into contact with the body fluid of someone with HIV, even if it is through blood transfusion!
In fact you can get HIV by simply being exposed to the blood of another person who has HIV, so it is incorrect to assume that by avoiding all homosexuals, drug users and having sex with anyone, suddenly you are 100% protected!
This is not scientific to draw conclusions from generalising from Statistics in this way!
If you actually want to educate people, then teach them safe sex, how not to share needles in drug use, how to avoid contact with body fluids of infected individuals. dont tell them biased ideas about avoiding all homesexuals and drug users! It doesnt address the reality of how HIV is spread!
Bramuel posted this task to gain help for the community health team at Arrow Web Hospital. This task is NOT about the issue of debating HIV/AIDS. It is about locating resources that the community health team can use on the ground. Debating the issue in a public forum takes the focus OFF of the local community and what Bramuel the LR of this village asked for.
Before this thread begins to turn into something it was not intended for, I kindly request we ALL remember that this task focuses on tangible resources that the hospital staff can use in Kenya with the people they serve.

You gotta ACTUALLY allow people to express Their REAL phobias and beliefs because there are a lot of crazy myths out there about HIV that leads to children Getting raped to "cure HIV"! You cant just ignore that grassroot reality!
I am 100% okay with people speaking loud their beliefs and prejudices so that the issue can come to light. I would hope that everyone here has an open mind too.
Prevention is the best course of action. Education of the people.
