Identify organizations that offer small-scale funding opportunities
Status:

Step:
2
For this task, we would like to develop a list of organizations that offer different types of small-scale funding to support community health initiatives. You should include the organization name, contact information and if they have information about their application process, deadlines, etc. please include this information as well.

I posted information to the wiki about the application, but will also post it here. According to the website (www.friendsofkenya.org):
Funding Guidelines
Project suggestions come from a variety of sources: the Board, members, and friends; Kenyan individuals and organizations; and outside groups or individuals. The Board evaluates them all and votes on funding projects during monthly conference calls.
Objectives
Our projects are generally small, with an emphasis on self-help. When we elect to become part of larger projects, we designate our contributions to specific, and often basic, less glamorous, aspects of an enterprise. FOK's occasional participation in projects in conjunction with major organizations, such as the Africa Wildlife Foundation, has helped us earn recognition and support beyond our immediate membership. To reflect the wide diversity of interests and concerns of members, we emphasize the following:
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for small-scale self-help programs
Education
Health
Conservation and Wildlife
Emergency Relief
Economic Development
Projects supported by Volunteers in Kenya
Limitations
Because of limited revenues and focused priorities, FOK is unable to fund every request that it receives. Moreover, we do not:
Grant requests to help single individuals
Provide scholarships, school fees, or tuition in either the United States or Kenya
Fund large projects, such as high-school complexes or major commercial ventures
Fund operating budgets or recurring items
Provide loans
The Board considers it important that FOK's donations go to demonstrably viable ventures. While we cannot provide funds to construct a large and expensive complex, for example, particularly when the source of primary funding is uncertain, we will consider later requests to provide furnishings or equipment should it be built.
Funding Amounts
Grants from FOK are generally small, ranging from $250 to $3,000, but many are around $500. FOK is not always able to provide the full amount requested.
Follow-upFOK requests that all its grantees send a follow-up letter or email indicating the progress and/or successful completion of the project.
Proposal Information
To submit a proposal, complete and mail the Friends of Kenya Project Funding Application, or provide the following information:
Project title
Contact person
Contact address
Name of person submitting request
Name of person responsible for overseeing project
Project description
Project location (include village, district, and province)
Number of people benefiting from project
Anticipated project start date
Anticipated project completion date
Amount requested (in US dollars)
If this project is part of a larger project, plan to raise the rest of the funds
How you heard about Friends of Kenya
Submit your proposal to:
Friends of Kenya Projects
c/o Jensy Patterson43968 Championship Place
Ashburn, VA 20147
This funding proposal in particular could help the hospital purchase the 8 new beds and mattresses needed for Bramuel to apply for the National Health Insurance Fund inspection for accreditation.
I have attached their application as well.

This one was previously located by Mary:
From their website:
The African Diaspora Medical Project, Inc. (ADMProject) is established solely for the purpose of providing medical relief assistance to the most needy in Africa and throughout the African Diaspora. We are a non-profit organization and we identify and/or develop health-related projects that can be supported with technical, personnel and materiel assistance. These projects are implemented in response to, and in collaboration with, our medical colleagues in the subject areas. Our projects are undertaken by a team of specialists and technical assistance providers who will work with health professionals, community members, businesses, institutions, and other entities to respond to health care problems by conducting extensive, in-depth investigations and analyses and following through with planned action.
How to Apply
A simple proposal, which may be written in letterform, is the first step in the application process. This initial proposal should not exceed five pages (four pages text and one page for the budget) and should provide the following information:
1. Organizational background: Briefly describe the history and expertise of your organization.
• Is your organization incorporated? If so, when did you incorporate? If not, do you represent an identifiable group?
• Provide a list of your board members and/or leadership
• What does your organization/group do?
• What are some of your major accomplishments?
• Who have you traditionally worked with and/or targeted? (This might include the geographic area, social entity or other factors that identify the community with which you work)
2. A description of the social, environmental and health concerns and/or conditions that you will address:
If possible, provide statistics, photographs or data that help describe this condition, as well as any other information that can be provided that will increase our understanding of the problem.
3. An explanation of the work to be undertaken and how this will promote a change for those individuals or conditions that you are trying to affect:
Here you should be very clear as to how your efforts will complement or impact existing services, if any, or how they attempt to solve and/or confront a condition rather than alleviate a symptom. Also, describe how the affected community will participate in achieving the desired solution.
4. Desired Assistance:
Describe in detail how the ADMProject can be of assistance. Be very specific as to what your needs are.
5. A budget:
If possible, there should be a line-by-line expense accounting for the entire project; however, your budget proposal will be considered a preliminary projection. It is the intention of ADMProject to provide our expertise and technical support in the development of a projected budget, which will reflect our collaboration. Include a brief statement describing the level of contribution or support needed. Please indicate tentative, proposed or current in-kind or financial assistance. This may include time, effort or any support deemed significant.
Considerations
To be considered for assistance, the Request for Assistance (RFA) application must be completed in its entirety. Our executive committee will then evaluate this RFA to determine feasibility. It is our goal to respond to all such requests deemed legitimate. However, our decision to respond favorably may be influenced by several factors:
• Inhibiting constraints of local jurisdictions
• Perceived credibility of the requesting entity
• Consistency of the request with the goals of the ADMProject as outlined in our Mission Statement
• The capacity of the ADMProject to respond to such requests
• Security issues
Once the RFA has been approved and accepted, we will then begin collaboration with health officials in the subject area to design a project plan and establish a budget. In many cases, this will require a site visit in order to better evaluate the need and to meet with local officials.
The ADMProject stands ready to answer any questions and assist you in completing this application.

Hi Jennifer
Don't think I have posted this here before - I have sent it to several villages and tend to lose track...
The list I have accumulated at http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dgs9fnp6_0g5zp8p3n contains a variety of potential funding sources, almost all with details of how to apply.
Its not specifically aimed at healthcare projects - its a general doc that I add to when I find things - but Kayole will meet the criteria of some of them.
Also contains some information on sources of health-related books which may be of interest to the hospital.
Mary
Mary, thanks so much for posting this document. It's so helpful not having to recreate the wheel all the time. It makes things a lot easier. Tonight is the first I've had the opportunity to look through it and there are a lot of prospective places we can contact.
We are in need of people interested in writing proposals to help us. Please contact me if you have experience in this area, are good with writing and willing to help us work on these. First priority right now is getting the beds needed for the accreditation inspection. We could also possibly use these opportunities to try and secure an x-ray machine, as well as financial support for the development and equipping of the mobile health unit.
Thank you in advance-
Jennifer
Your most welcome and i believe i will be one of the help in this ministry through advices in Jesus name

Proposal writers are good needed but i think if any one can volunteer in that issue it sounds very good.
Pastor Fred.
Sushmita,
I would love for you to help with writing proposals. I would like to start with the Friends of Kenya and The African Diaspora Medical Project. I haven't had a chance to go completely through the list that Mary posted yet, but for now we'd like to focus on getting the remaining beds the hospital needs for inspection and accreditation.
I appreciate your offer to help. If you would like to work within the wiki, Bramuel and I can help add pertinent information as well.
Warm Regards-
Jennifer
Dear Jennifer & Samuel
Thanks for your message.

Hi Sushmita-thank you so much for this post. Many of these we've not come across yet (at least I have not) so we'll work on establishing contact and see what we come up with.
Thank you again for your help!

I typed in "hospital equipment" and several NGOs came up who supplies HE to other countries.
www.globalsam.org does also but the hospital there will have to donate US$1000 for a 40 ft. container. Feel free to contact them for more details. ed.enzor@globalsam.org

Hi!
Its gone very quiet here... hope things are going OK.
I am assuming you are still waiting for replies from FOK and ADMA on the application for funding for the beds? If they don't work out, there will be other places to try.
One option that some villages have tried is online fundraising. There are a lot of sites around that allow projects to be listed, although the majority only accept groups registered in Western countries. There are exceptions - those that I know of are listed at http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dgs9fnp6_0g5zp8p3n#ONLINE_FUNDRAISING
Application procedures vary.
Several Nabuur projects have been listed on GiveMeaning, and success has varied across projects - some have raised very little money. I suspect the key to this is having a good project description, also good publicity, so maybe one for once the website it up and running as it will then be possible to include a link.
