Identify organizations that offer small-scale funding opportunities

Status: Finished
Step:
2

For this task, we would like to develop a list of organizations that offer different types of small-scale funding to support community health initiatives. You should include the organization name, contact information and if they have information about their application process, deadlines, etc. please include this information as well.

Hi Mary-

Thanks for this list. There are some there that I'm not familiar with so I will take some time and look over it and see what will work for us.

I've spoken with some other facilitators about Give Meaning and gotten mixed reviews. I've not seen it work very successfully so far, so I'm not sure it would be a good option.

Thanks again! You are the queen of resources! :)

I stumbled on this US site this morning: http://www.yourcause.com/ It is a social networking site and it looks like an individual can tie a need to a listed US charity for fund raising.

Mary, maybe you could take a look as you seem to have some expertise in this area? It might be an alternative to the Canadian based Give Meaning.

Warm regards,
Marge

Thanks Marge

I have to say that I don't actually have any experience of using these sites, I am just someone who tends to collect information!

I know that GiveMeaning allows groups from outside the US/Canda to raise funds directly, as some of the Nabuur projects have done it that way. But Jennifer you are right that many of them have not raised a lot of money. The most successfuly Nabuur one I am aware of is Matopeni who got about $600. I do know of one unrelated to Nabuur that has raised over $3000.

I had a look at YourCause, and unfortunately this one seems to be like many others in that it will only allow organisatins that are registered as charities with the US Internal Revenue Service. It may be worth you dropping them an email just to confirm this.

From the FAQ page http://www.yourcause.com/Faq.aspx#Question1

Quote:
What is a "cause" and how does it relate to a charity?

A cause is your personal campaign on behalf of a charity (an IRS approved 501(c)(3)) with a mission close to your heart. Whether it's raising awareness, promoting a particular event, or raising money, it's about your passion to make a difference.

http://www.yourcause.com/Faq.aspx#Question26

Quote:
Does Yourcause.com include nonprofit organizations worldwide or only those in the United States?

Our charity database includes only those organizations recognized by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service as public charities. In most cases, these organizations are organized and registered in the U.S., and they often conduct charitable operations around the world.

It does say that 'in most cases' these are US organisations. I am assuming that means it is possible for groups from other countries to be recognised as charities by the IRS too.

I tried the IRS website but couldn't find any info - its probably there but I couldn't find it.

Does anyone from America know anything about how this is done, or know a friendly lawyer prepared to offer some free advice? I have the feeling it will have very strict rules on who can apply, and involve a huge amount of paperwork...

Do we have any neighbours with experience of social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace etc? Although not a direct way of raising money it could be a way to make Arrow more well known which could lead to all sorts of contacts.

Mary,
Thank you for looking at YourCause. After reading your comment and taking a closer look at the site, you are absolutely correct that it is only useful for fundraising for an existing US charity. Sorry, I should have taken a closer look at it before posting.
Blessings,
Marge

Hi Marge and Mary
I was thinking that the organization is a registered Nonprofit and non-governmental organization as a national organization.in Kenya the organization operates a bank account which local people and well wishes donate through it and as you know Barclay's bank is an international bank which ARROW WEB HOSPITAL has account with and in my view the bank excepts VISA CARD, CREDIT CARD, AND EVEN BARCLAY CARD, can we make this to be as our online donation on the website so that anybody who wish to donate to the project can donate online by using his or her visa card or one of above.i was wondering that this may can be easier than all other ways that we are looking about.
late me hear your thoughts on this.
best wishes

Bramuel-

You look very nice in your new picture! :)

I think online donations are one way to look at funding, but ultimately we need to explore some of these other resources as well. I don't think the website and online donations are going to be the #1 way you get money coming in to the organization. I think ultimately you will find that will always be through local efforts of the community.

Just my opinion-

Hi Bramuel

This is not something I have any practical experience of, but the easiest way to set up online credit card donations would be via something like PayPal. Unfortunately from what I have read in the past they don't allow the money to be withdrawn in Kenya.

You may want to talk to Stephen at Matopeni as they have successfully used MoneyBookers. This allows people to donate via credit card and the money can be paid directly into a bank account anywhere in the world, including Kenya.

Jennifer, I originally mentioned online donations as another possible option on top of applying to various organisations and whatever can be done locally. But I agree that it is not going to be a solution on its own, and that it is not a guaranteed way of raising money.

It may be that Steve who posted under the internet task has some interesting ideas on how to get publicity for the hospital. Which could lead to all sorts of useful contacts...

Bramuel sent a letter of inquiry to the Celtic Charity Fund on 10/16/08. They responded to him on 10/17/08 with the requirements for consideration of any proposal and an application form. After looking through this, I think the best approach to make certain this fits with their requirements is to focus on something the hospital does with children. They offer a relatively small award, but as we've already seen, we can make a little go a long way in Kenya. The closing date for new submissions is 12/31/08 and decisions will be made within 8 weeks of the closing date.

I have attached the requirements and the application form. Anyone interested in giving this a go? For more information, their website is located here:

http://www.celticfc.net/home/charityFund/default.aspx

Bramuel-maybe you can talk more too about what specific area you'd like the application to focus on. Maybe the new things you mentioned to me the other day that NHIF was asking you to get for the newborns? Any idea what those things cost?

Hi Jennifer

Sounds promising!

Given that the doc says

"Areas of Support

Celtic has identified 3 principal and 3 subsidiary areas of support:-

Principal Areas

1. Charities in support of children’s needs.
2. Community action on drugs.
3. Projects that develop and promote religious and ethnic harmony.

Subsidiary Areas

A. Supporting the homeless.
B. Helping the unemployed.
C. Support and research for projects aiding the affliction of illness, famine and innocent families within the areas of war."

One idea could be for some of the equipments on the list that is currently under the ADMA task, especially the incubator and abything else of particular benefit to children. Or are you still hoping to put in an application to ADMA for that?

Or possibly whatever work Arrow does around treatment and health education for kids? For example I know that earlier in the year they ran a vaccination programme for children.

Bramuel and I have been working over the last several weeks on developing a proposal for submission to Kitchen Table Charities Trust (http://www.kitchentablecharities.org/). The attached proposal was submitted this evening.

Again, if we are successful in being granted funds to purchase the 3 pieces of requested equipment, NHIF has informed Bramuel that they will recommend the hospital for Comprehensive Coverage-which is a higher level of reimbursement. This can then be used toward further development of the hospital after expenses are covered allowing them to again achieve greater financial stability and independence. This will also allow them to attain the highest level of accreditation NHIF offers. Any further equipment or improvements to the hospital will then be added marks in their favor. NHIF scores them during their inspections. Scores are out of a possible 3000. Right now the hospital's score is slightly over 1800 which is great considering the hospital's young age and this particular stage of their development.

Bramuel and I heard back from Kitchen Table Charities today. They explained that they cannot accept the proposal submitted via email and need it in regular postal mail. They also requested additional information be submitted with the proposal, but stated that it does appear to be an appropriate proposal meeting their criteria for consideration.

We'll keep you posted on how things progress as we know more. So far so good.

Bramuel-

Have you gone through the list of items that they have requested be submitted with the proposal? I need to talk to you about this so that we can make sure we get it done and resubmitted as soon as possible.
