PROJECT ROOM-General Project Updates and Information

Status: In progress

This section will be used for general project updates and for sharing information that does not fit in to the tasks outlined above.

This looks like a great contact Mary. I don't know how you find all these! I sent this to Calvin and asked him to take a look to see if he thinks there's potential for collaboration with them and what things he might want to know. I'm sure either Calvin or myself will make contact and see where things go from there.

Thanks for sharing this!

Rev. Wasike-

I don't know how I missed your message. I know that Alison has been working on a way to get the supplies that were donated transported from the UK to Kenya. The last I knew was that she was going to approach the Kenyan airlines to see if they could transport it for free. I have not heard back from her, so I am assuming she has no news on this either at this point.

Do you believe you would be able to help raise funds to transport the supplies? I can contact Alison and see if she knows how much the cost will be so we have an idea of how much money is needed.

I apologize for the delay in responding to you about this and thank you so much for your kind offer.

We heard back from THET today. There is some concern about the hospital size being so small, so they have asked us to see if we might partner with other local healthcare facilities or a local hospital so they could link the group of facilities in Kenya with a UK hospital. I'll update again as we continue to discuss and explore the feasibility of this.

Bramuel-

Were you ever able to reach Lucy from THET on the phone? Let me know and I can follow up again with her in email. What did you think about her suggestion of a collaboration of healthcare centers so that they can link you all with a larger facility? Is that something that might be a possibility? Maybe the Nairobi Eastlands project could consider joining hands with us for the purposes of a linkage with a larger hospital. I'm not sure where things stand with their project right now, but we can always check. Are there any other health care facilities or NGO's focused on healthcare that we could approach about a partnership for the purposes of linking you to a larger facility?

Let me know your thoughts about this.

I seem to have a problem and am not receiving any notification of messages. The story now is that there will unfortunately be a delay of several months for these goods. Kenya Airlines are happy to transport the goods but there will be handling/security charges which I hope AVIF can cover. I'll keep you posted but due to circumstances beyond my control the goods are unavailable at the moment.

Bramuel was not able to reach Lucy from THET on the phone this week, so I followed up tonight with another message to her. I also spoke with Lynley, the facilitator for the Nairobi Eastlands project to see if they might be interested in joining hands with us so that they could benefit from the linkage to a larger hospital as well. Apparently, they are connected to another health facility too, so that might help. I asked Lucy to please send me clarification on what size facility they typically consider for a linkage to be established. She did note previously that there are other options, so if this doesn't work out there may be another way. For now, we wait and see. Bramuel-I did send your number to her again, so hopefully she'll try to call you to make things easier.

If anyone knows of any other projects focused on health care in the near vicinity of Arrow-Web Hospital, please let me know so we can contact them.

Hi everyone-

Just wanted to give you a quick update on a few things. Bramuel hasn't been feeling well, so I haven't talked to him other than via email in about 2 weeks. Hopefully he will be feeling much better soon.

I heard back from Lucy again from THET about linking the hospital. It appears that unless we can connect the hospital to a larger hospital in Kenya, it will be difficult for them to link Arrow-Web Hospital with a hospital in the UK. She did send me another source for smaller organizations, so I am in the process of looking through that information to see if it might be of benefit to us. So far, I do not see many health organizations. It seems more educationally based, but there is a bunch of information, so I still have more to look through.

If I'm able to talk with Bramuel tomorrow-I will update again on any new information and hopefully be able to give you an update on how the first month of accepting NHIF insurance cards went.

Have a good weekend!

Hi everyone-I hope that you are all enjoying your weekend. Bramuel and I had the opportunity to talk last night and I wanted to update you all on where things presently stand with our project.

1. I hope by now you've all seen the update for October about how many NHIF cards were accepted. 31 patients were able to be treated at Arrow-Web Hospital because they can now accept these insurance cards. The hospital submitted information to NHIF and should be reimbursed about $545 USD for services rendered to these patients. This money will allow them to purchase additional medications for the pharmacy and Bramuel hopes then it will be fully stocked as NHIF expects. I asked him how the NHIF representative feels about how they are doing thus far. He tells me they are "very impressed."

2. I'm happy to report that Bramuel is feeling much better now. For those of you who didn't know, he's not been feeling well the last week or so. He hopes to sit down with Steve, the website designer, very soon in order to finish going through the suggested edits to the website. Once that is done, it should be complete for now outside of regular updates on current happenings and events.

3. Bramuel has looked over the African Diaspora proposal and we talked through some more details we might add to show the impact receiving the requested equipment will have on the hospital and for the local community. I am going to use the notes we made last night, make some additions hopefully this week and get it to Bramuel for final inspection. My biggest concern with getting this proposal submitted is making certain it truly reflects how the items requested will help provide long-term sustainability to the hospital. Once we make some final tweaks, I think it will be ready to go.

4. Bramuel and I talked about next steps for Nabuur volunteers and we've decided to turn our focus on a few new tasks, which I will post shortly. One of these will focus on obtaining medical reference books for the hospital staff, another will focus on obtaining pamphlets and other information about various health conditions that can be provided to the local people as a teaching tool when the Community Health team is out and about. Lastly, we would like to get Bramuel's camera replaced. As many of you will remember, Bramuel was attacked several months ago and his camera was stolen. He has not been able to replace it. The camera is important so that they can keep updated pictures on the website and continue to show progress to the volunteers here at Nabuur. It is also very useful to have when we need to submit proposals to help document what needs to be addressed.

Look for new tasks to be posted soon.

We appreciate all of your help and dedication!

Regards-

Jennifer

Hi everyone-things have been so quiet in our village, I wanted to give you a brief update after speaking with Bramuel this morning:

1. WEBSITE: Bramuel has all of the changes and has gone through them with Steve, the website designer. He tells me that the changes have been made, but just are not published yet. Steve has apparently been out of town and he hopes to see the changes published this week.

2. REFERENCE BOOKS: Bramuel said that he will email me a list of titles from the medical staff. He apologized and said that he has been so busy with meetings this week that he had forgotten to do this.

3. KITCHEN TABLE CHARITIES: Bramuel and I have been working on a proposal this week for Kitchen Table Charities based in the UK, which was a suggestion from the local rep in Matopeni. We will be requesting 3 pieces of equipment for the medical laboratory and hope to have this submitted this week.

4. AFRICAN DIASPORA MEDICAL PROJECT: Neither Bramuel or I have received word from our proposal submitted last week to the African Diaspora Medical Project.

5. CAMERA: Bramuel would still really like to find a used digital camera to replace the one that was stolen from him in a robbery. If anyone happens to have one laying around that they would not mind donating to the hospital, please let us know and we will give you the information where to mail it.

6. NHIF UPDATE-NOVEMBER: Bramuel did not have the exact numbers yet for how many patients were treated during November that carry NHIF cards. He is planning to run a report and get that information to me, or update here himself, but we are hoping it was better than last month and they will be able to purchase the remaining medications required by NHIF to completely stock the pharmacy. If you recall, they were able to purchase half of them with the reimbursement from last month.

Bramuel said that he will email further updates to me and/or post updates here soon himself. He has been very busy and is still struggling to use the new Nabuur site himself.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support-

I forgot to mention that the supplies that Alison from AVIF was able to secure several months ago for the hospital are soon to be on their way thanks to Alison's hard work and the kindness of Kenya Airways. Two boxes of supplies including; 100 x Size 4 LMA (an air way device), 600 needles of 3 different sizes, 100 Eye pads, and various sundries eg plasters will be picked up in the UK and transported to Nairobi.

I have to say a special thank you to Alison, AVIF and Kenya Airways for making this possible. Patience definitely pays off :)
