Research options for securing an X-ray machine, Baby Incubator & ultrasound equipment

Status: Just started
Step:
1

The last step required to achieve level-A accreditation status under NHIF is for Arrow Web Hospital to secure an X-ray machine, baby incubator and ultrasound equipment. With each level of accreditation under NHIF, the amount of money the hospital is reimbursed per card-carrying patient per month increases. This equipment will also again allow the hospital to accept referrals from other areas, also increasing the amount of reimbursement they receive. With the receipt of level-B accreditation status, NHIF will soon list Arrow Web Hospital on their website and include the hospital in their marketing materials, so it is expected that more and more patients will seek treatment from them. Having this type of equipment on hand, will definitely be of great use to them.

For this task, we are asking volunteers to research options for helping Arrow Web Hospital obtain the needed equipment. This may be organizations who have equipment to donate, or also via funding proposals. We will need to evaluate all options to minimize costs.

Bramuel researched the cost to purchase this equipment locally. Estimated costs are as follows:

X-ray machine 12,800,000 KES ($160,602.26 USD)

This one seems particularly high to me, I think possibly there was a typo in the email message, but this is based on what was in the message I received. Bramuel can you please double check this one and make sure the figure is correct?

Utrasound machine 1,127,500 KES (14,146.80 USD)

Baby incubator machine 800,000 KES (10,037.34 USD)

These figures are all based on if these items are purchased locally in Kenya. It seems like it may make more sense to try to get these items donated (used/refurbished equipment) and less costly to raise funds for transport rather than to purchase them outright. Mary-

I just heard back from Assist International. Unfortunately, they are unable to accept new partnerships at this time. We never know until we ask though, so it was definitely worth trying.

Thank you again for sharing the information.

Hi all,

Anyone seeking laboratory equipment may want to have a look on the following websites:

-www.ssilink.org (the Sustainable Sciences Institute)
-www.seedinglabs.org (Seeding Labs)

Both organizations help scientists and clinicians located in the developing world access laboratory equipment.

There is also a website you may know about: www.scientistswithoutborders.org
It's a web portal on which you can find resources of all kind, I just checked with the key word medical equipment and found out that several hospitals and agencies located in Ghana, Africa may have services relevant for the Arrow Web Hospital.

Hope it helps!

This was a chance find, which may be of interest if the hospital is interested in looking at low cost alternatives to a standard baby incubator.... CART - Christian Africa Relief Trust http://cart.ben-dyson.com/projects.html "Helping Premature Babies in Tanzania CART has been involved in a Tanzanian project to make a locally-built, low-tec, low-cost incubator for premature babies. The igh death rathe amongst these babes is a real problem and several hundred of their lives have already been saved by these wonderful devices. We now have 1-5 of them in 11 hospitals in the Kilmanjaro region and they have been copied in Uganda, Malawi and Zambia. If you would like info on this patented solution please email CART." So I started doing a little digging, and it seems that several groups are working on various low cost designs. I don't know whether the one mentioned by CART is one of these or not. Fixable Infant Incubator http://www.appropedia.org/Fixable_Infant_Incubator "In designing this device, our goal has been to engineer a simple solution to a complex problem in the developing world. Our proposal is to design a safe incubator that will be used in local health centers, be easily assembled, be portable, need minimal operating capabilities and will keep the infant warm and hydrated." Appears to be still under development, but says they are looking to partner with health agencies around the world, gives contact details. This is linked with International Development Design Summit http://iddsummit.org/ and D-Lab http://web.mit.edu/d-lab . Transformed Toyotas can save lives -- as incubators http://boston.bizjournals.com/boston/stories/2007/10/08/newscolumn2.html "Simply put, his group is exploring whether it can take a Toyota motor vehicle, dismantle it and use vital parts that can be reassembled into ... incubators for infants in the developing world." Also suggests that many hospitals have problems with donated equipment, although I would imagine that depends on how good your power supply is, and how frequently items are maintained. Run by CIMIT http://www.cimit.org/ and Design That Matters http://designthatmatters.org/portfolio/projects/incubator/ and Medicine Mondiale http://www.medicinemondiale.org/Our%20Projects (which says they hoped to begin production in June 2008 but does not give any further updates) . And a slightly different approach based on a low-cost bag to keep babies warm http://embraceglobal.org http://embraceglobal.org/main/vision "Embrace is a thermoregulator designed to save premature and low birth weight babies. Our mission is to help the 20 million vulnerable babies born every year around the world, who can not access traditional incubators that cost up to $20,000." Initial testing will be in India with the intention to roll out to other countries, does not give dates. Other sites say the cost will be $25. . All have contact details on their sites. Some are also researching low-cost alternatives for other medical equipment as well. Maybe one of them would be interested in using Arrow as a test site in Kenya.... Mary [teaser] => Hi! CART has been involved in a Tanzanian project to make a locally-built, low-tec, low-cost incubator for premature babies. The igh death rathe amongst these babes is a real problem and several hundred of their lives have already been saved by these wonderful devices. We now have 1-5 of them in 11 hospitals in the Kilmanjaro region and they have been copied in Uganda, Malawi and Zambia. If you would like info on this patented solution please email CART."

So I started doing a little digging, and it seems that several groups are working on various low cost designs. I don't know whether the one mentioned by CART is one of these or not.

Fixable Infant Incubator
http://www.appropedia.org/Fixable_Infant_Incubator

"In designing this device, our goal has been to engineer a simple solution to a complex problem in the developing world. Our proposal is to design a safe incubator that will be used in local health centers, be easily assembled, be portable, need minimal operating capabilities and will keep the infant warm and hydrated."
Appears to be still under development, but says they are looking to partner with health agencies around the world, gives contact details.

Transformed Toyotas can save lives -- as incubators
http://boston.bizjournals.com/boston/stories/2007/10/08/newscolumn2.html
"Simply put, his group is exploring whether it can take a Toyota motor vehicle, dismantle it and use vital parts that can be reassembled into ... incubators for infants in the developing world."
Also suggests that many hospitals have problems with donated equipment, although I would imagine that depends on how good your power supply is, and how frequently items are maintained.

Run by CIMIT http://www.cimit.org/ and Design That Matters http://designthatmatters.org/portfolio/projects/incubator/ and Medicine Mondiale http://www.medicinemondiale.org/Our%20Projects (which says they hoped to begin production in June 2008 but does not give any further updates)
.

And a slightly different approach based on a low-cost bag to keep babies warm
http://embraceglobal.org
http://embraceglobal.org/main/vision
"Embrace is a thermoregulator designed to save premature and low birth weight babies. Our mission is to help the 20 million vulnerable babies born every year around the world, who can not access traditional incubators that cost up to $20,000."
Initial testing will be in India with the intention to roll out to other countries, does not give dates. Other sites say the cost will be $25.
.

All have contact details on their sites.

Some are also researching low-cost alternatives for other medical equipment as well. Maybe one of them would be interested in using Arrow as a test site in Kenya....
