Research Organizations that Provide Assistance with Medications
Status:

Step:
1
For this task we would like to establish a two-part list:
1. Places that Arrow-Web Hospital could contact who may be able to supply needed medications and their requirements for requesting support.
2. Other local organizations providing health care services that we might be able to partner with to get discounted rates on medications required.

Bramuel provided this list of the most frequently used medication and supplies at the hospital.
These organisations were already listed under other tasks. Seemed to make sense to bring all together into one place so they don't get forgotten about. I have added them into the wiki - this list may need to be put into a more organised format at some point, including more details of application details etc.
With a few exceptions, I don't know whether Bramuel attempted to get in contact with them.
Also, as I didn't post all of them, I am not certain which ones might be sources of medication/equipment and which are more general info.

I have been looking around a bit and have found a link for this document

Although a bit old (1998), a lot of the things there are still applicable. There is one organisation in Nairobi.
The Pharmaceutical Programme
CISS International (Community Initiatives Support Services)
P.O. Box 73860
Nairobi
KENYA
tel: (+254-2) 729 095
fax: (+254-2) 711 918
Think Bramual tried to call them

Another possibility for drug and equipment donation is Direct Relief - http://www.directrelief.org/AboutUs/FAQs/FAQs.aspx?linkidentifier=id&ite...
It does not say how potential partners apply, but if Arrow meets their criteria (listed on the page above) you could try emailing them to ask.
http://www.directrelief.org/OurFocus.aspx tells a little more about what they do and
http://www.directrelief.org/WhereWeWork/Countries/Kenya/Kenya.aspx shows that they already work with Kenyan groups.

This report has some interesting information and resources near the back that you might find useful.
www.blessing.org might also be helpful-they say they offer discounted medications.

This is paper about Nurse Midwives-the lessons learned section and discussion about sustainability is very applicable I think to your project.
This one is a link to a Health Manager's Toolkit. This contains a lot of very useful resources that could help you:

This article speaks to steps taken and best practices.
The ddiscussion regarding how they dealt with getting medications is interesting-something I've not come across anywhere else in my reading.

"US Doctors For Africa (USDFA) is launching a new initiative called Africa-USA Sister Hospitals Partnership Program (AUSHPP) to combat the growing health care crisis caused by the AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa. The AUSHPP will unite American and African medical institutions in a shared fight against HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases. The
partnerships will relieve the overwhelming need for medical manpower and resources by creating a direct flow of doctors, resources and medical supplies between hospitals in the United States and their counterparts in
Africa."
Bramuel emailed them. They replied that he would need to find an American hospital to partner with first, then that hospital would apply to USDFA for assistance

They donate medical supplies to hospitals around the world although it does not give any information on how they select the ones they assist. You could try contacting them and ask. It says that the Community Relations Team manages the process.
There is a contact form at https://www.baxter.com/about_baxter/contact_us/index.html
Apologies for the dodgy formatting in the wiki - the Nabuur wiki and I have never got on very well as it seems to keep inserting blank lines completely at randon - Raul, I really hope this is something that will get fixed on the new site as I know I am not the only one who has problems with it!
Mary
You'e awesome Mary! Thanks so much for doing this. It is a huge help.

The Partnership for Quality Medical Donations
http://www.pqmd.org/index.asp
"The Partnership for Quality Medical Donations and its members, in alliance with related organizations, is dedicated to the development, dissemination and adherence to high standards in the delivery of medical products to under-served people and disaster victims around the world."
Members are a mix of drug companies and aid organisations. List of their members and more details of what they do: http://www.pqmd.org/members.asp Or a simple list of their websites at: http://www.pqmd.org/resources.asp
Contact form: http://www.pqmd.org/contact.asp
So not a direct source of donations but may be able to offer advice or put Arrow in contact with members who are able to help. Alternative is to look at all the members individually.

Bramuel
I contacted several of the organizations we had listed on the WIKI today. The WIKI has been updated to reflect these contacts. I will update again as I begin to hear back from the organizations contacted.
Jennifer
I heard back from Direct Relief today. This is a portion of their response:
"Our organization specializes in securing pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, and equipment for hospitals and health projects we support around the world. We do not provide technical assistance or cash gifts, nor do we directly foster community projects. We are thankful for your email but cannot directly offer financial support.
We identify partners through an application process that allows us to select organizations and/or projects that are a good match for Direct Relief International’s capabilities and strategic goals. However, Direct Relief only works with clinics, hospitals or healthcare organizations that have been established for 3+ years. Our organization thrives on sustainable, long-term relationships with our in-country partners. Therefore, we do not offer assistance to start-up clinics nor do we send one-time shipments."
Since I did not specifically request technical assistance or a cash gift, I sent additional clarifying information back in response to show the hospital has been in existance for 3 years and is looking for agencies that can help them meet their objectives, so I'm not taking this as a negative response. I think they just need more information to know how they might be able to help. She did provide another recommendation for a resource to look into, which I will try to do this evening.
Jennifer
I also heard back today from the Doc to Dock program. Here is a portion of their response:
"Thank you for taking the time to write to Doc to Dock and for sharing our common interest in helping those in the world with the greatest need. We are delighted to review your request, but in order to do this most efficiently we ask that you provide us with information in the following two areas.
Firstly, we need a profile of your proposed recipient hospital, including its general size, the community it serves, and an initial needs assessment. Secondly, we would like to know whether or not you, or your organization, are able to contribute to the funding of this project, as we are always looking for help in the sponsorship of containers."
They then evaluate this information and will let us know whether or not they are able to help. If not, they have another affiliate organization they can refer us to.
Bramuel I will need your assistance responding to what they are requesting. Please let me know your thoughts. If you'd like to proceed, we just need to gather the information and I have the contact person to send it to.
Jennifer
Hi Jennifer
This is very interesting can you proceed and we will see what their need from the our orgsnization so that i can inform the community.
warm regard
Bramuel
Bramuel-
I need your help with the needs analysis. This I believe is a list of what equipment/supplies you would need to fill the container.
My question for them is the cost of shipping so you know how much money would need to be raised to get one shipped-I don't know right now.
Jennifer
Hi Jennifer,
Barb would probably be able to tell you more about costs of shipping a container.
I am giving her a hand right now because there was an issue with some officials trying to take advantage of a charity and the items have not been released after a lot of money has been paid so we are trying to see how to support this.
I will let you know when something is decided on this front
Raul
Hi Jennifer
thanks i will come back with all list in my next message
Raul
Is good to know the exact cost of shipping so that we know how much money is needed to be raise.
Best wishes and looking forward
Warm regard
Bramuel
It sounds like this agency works in a very similar way to Doc to Dock. This information was received today in response to the additional information I sent after their first message back to me:
"Thank you for your interest in Direct Relief International. We identify partners through an application process that allows us to select organizations and/or projects that are a good match for Direct Relief International's capabilities and strategic goals. In order to qualify for assistance through Direct Relief, a health care facility or program must meet the following criteria at the outset of the application process:
* Health care services must be provided to medically underserved populations in a charitable/subsidized and non-discriminatory manner.
* Health care services cannot be withheld from people who are not
able to pay for services.
* Health care services and donated products must be supplied to patients free of charge, for a voluntary fee or a fee based on patient's ability to pay.
* Health care services must be effectively provided by qualified health care providers. (Qualified health providers would include practitioners that have either completed specialized training or education in the diagnosis and treatment of local health conditions.)
* Donated medical goods must be stored in a secure area.
* Recipients or assigned consignees must have the capacity to receive and clear medical donations through secure channels.
* There must be a match between Direct Relief's inventory and the needs of the potential recipient.
* The recipient must be officially registered or qualified as an approved provider of health services.
If these criteria are met, candidates are invited to submit an application for medical donation to be reviewed for selection by the Program Department."
Medical supplies (and possibly wider assistance) rather than drugs, but thought I would post it anyway....
African Diaspora Medical Project
http://www.admproject.org
"The African Diaspora Medical Project is a non-sectarian, not-for-profit medical relief organization that identifies and/or develops projects in Africa by providing the technical, personnel, and material assistance necessary to create successful health-related initiatives.
Projects are implemented in response to, and in collaboration with, our medical colleagues throughout Africa and the Diaspora. "
Two possible ways of requesting assistance from them, one for medical supplies (not drugs), one for wider help:
Hands To Hands Program
http://www.admproject.org/admproject/hands.html
"The ADMProject is building a network by which surplus resources are collected from healthcare organizations for the purpose of supplying African clinics with the materials necessary for good healthcare. This project involves procurement, storage, inventory, shipment, and delivery of medical goods.
...
Do you know of an African clinic in need of medical supplies?
Please e-mail Aarthi Rao at info@admproject.org with a list of specific needs and contact information for the clinic (please include e-mail address if possible). Please make "Hands to Hands" the subject of the e-mail."
Request For Assistance
http://www.admproject.org/admproject/assistance.html
"Request for Assistance
The ADMProject is designed to accept requests for assistance from those working or living in Africa or the Diaspora who could like to help or enhance their community. Our work is in response to specific needs as defined by affected communities. We have created a simple Request for Assistance (RFA) Application that initiates the process of collaboration between individuals and/or communities and the ADMProject.
The RFA program provides an access point to those who would otherwise have little means to meet their needs. We believe that by planning and actively working with needy communities the ADMProject offers the opportunity for them to identify, define and meet their own challenges."
