Write answers to FAQ page

Status: Finished
Step:

The new website design is almost complete. Now we need assistance with revisions to the website content. One page on the website has been devoted to answering Frequently Asked Questions, or FAQ's. For this task, we are looking for someone who can help research and write concise, detailed and thorough responses to the questions listed. Current questions to be answered are;

1. Why do African girls drop out of school at a higher rate than boys? Are they forced to drop out of school?

2. What are the symptoms of Malaria?

3. What can be done to prevent HIV/AIDs and to keep it from spreading?

4. How can basic hygiene be best promoted at home?

5. I am expecting a baby. What kind of routine medical care do I need?

Hello everyone,

I will put in the post the information for two of the FAQs (no.2&3). I have one question for Jennifer about FAQ no. 4: are you interested in personal hygiene, food preparation hygiene or both?

What is malaria and what are its symptoms?

Malaria is an infectious disease. It’s caused by a parasite called Plasmodium. This parasite infects the red cells of the blood.
Malaria is transmitted through the bite of a particular kind of mosquito called Anopheles. This is found mainly in tropical and sub-tropical areas. Travelling in the areas where this mosquito lives increases the risk of catching the disease.

• Malaria occurs in attacks which last from 4 to 6 hours;
• The symptoms are: shaking chills, high fever and sweating as well as fatigue, headache, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, abdominal cramps, dry cough, muscle or joint pain, back ache;
• The attacks appear every other day or every third day;
• Some people may also experience: vomiting, diarrhea, coughing and yellowing (jaundice) of the skin and whites of the eyes.

What can be done to prevent HIV/AIDS and to keep it from spreading?

HIV – the human immunodeficiency virus – is a retrovirus which infects the cells of the human immune system. This means that as the disease progresses the immune system is affected and is no longer able to function properly. As a result it leaves the person susceptible to opportunistic infections and tumors.

The HIV – virus – is transmitted through the direct contact with the bodily fluid of a person already infected with it, meaning blood, semen, vaginal fluid, preseminal fluid and breast milk.
The ways in which one can get the disease include anal, vaginal or oral sex, blood transfusion, contaminated hypodermic needles, exchanges between mother and baby during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding.

General preventive methods:
1. Protection during sexual intercourse either by using male or by using female condoms;
2. Reducing the risk of exposure to contaminated blood by wearing gloves (made of latex), masks, protective eyeware or shields, and gowns or aprons;
3. Thoroughly washing your skin immediately after entering in contact with infected blood or other bodily fluids can reduce the risk of infection;
4. Care must be applied when using or handling sharp objects such as needles, scalpels or glass which are contaminated in order not to enjure ourselves;
5. HIV infected mothers should avoid breastfeeding;

Answer 2: Malaria is caused by a parasite called Plasmodium, which is transmitted via the bites of infected mosquitoes. In the human body, the parasites multiply in the liver, and then infect red blood cells. Symptoms of malaria include fever, nausea, flu-like symptoms, headache, and vomiting, and usually appear between 10 and 15 days after the mosquito bite. If not treated, malaria can quickly become life-threatening by disrupting the blood supply to vital organs. Answer 3: AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. AIDS is the final stage of HIV infection. Most people get the virus by having sex with an infected person, sharing a needle, shooting drugs, with someone who is infected, being born when their mother is infected, or drinking the breast milk of an infected person. The most effective to protect yourself from HIV transmission are to: -Abstain from sex -Be faithful to you partner if you are having sex -Condoms – use condoms if you are having sex. New ways of prevention are: Male Circumcision, Using Microbicides,HIV Vaccines, Diaphragms and Other Cervical Barriers, HIV 'Prevention Pills' , Herpes Treatment. Other ways to protect yourself is to: -Know the HIV-status of your partner -Do not inject illicit drugs -If you do inject drugs, never share needles or other equipment and use only clean needles and equipment -Make getting an HIV test part of your regular medical checkup. http://www.webmd.com/news/20060815/6-ways-prevent-aids [teaser] => [log] => [format] => 0 [uid] => 16615 [name] => [picture] => [data] => a:0:{} [path] => village/kayole-soweto/project/task/discussion/re-write-answers-faq-page-7 [field_embedded_video] => Array ( ) [comment_type] => task_discussion [og_groups] => Array ( [0] => 83008 ) [og_groups_both] => Array ( [83008] => Kayole-Soweto ) [og_public] => 1 [tags] => [nodewords] => Array ( ) [trid] => 0 [language] => en [i18n_status] => 0 [taxonomy] => Array ( ) [translation] => Array ( ) [cid] => 104936 [pid] => 0 [hostname] => 213.84.9.94 [thread] => 09/ [mail] => [homepage] => [comment_target_nid] => 94166 [depth] => 0 )

Answer 3:

AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. AIDS is the final stage of HIV infection. Most people get the virus by having sex with an infected person, sharing a needle, shooting drugs, with someone who is infected, being born when their mother is infected, or drinking the breast milk of an infected person.

The most effective to protect yourself from HIV transmission are to:

-Abstain from sex
-Be faithful to you partner if you are having sex
-Condoms – use condoms if you are having sex.

New ways of prevention are: Male Circumcision, Using Microbicides,HIV Vaccines, Diaphragms and Other Cervical Barriers, HIV 'Prevention Pills' , Herpes Treatment.

Other ways to protect yourself is to:
-Know the HIV-status of your partner
-Do not inject illicit drugs
-If you do inject drugs, never share needles or other equipment and use only clean needles and equipment
-Make getting an HIV test part of your regular medical checkup.

YEs,

It is unfortunate that something so simple can still not be readily available for everyone.
