I have just completed the Youth HIV/AIDS project proposal and i do hope to travel with Rev.Wasike when and before schools reopen on the 5th of January 2009.I will be conducting a needs assessment so that i may factor all the the issues at hand before i make the proposal ......a COMPLETE one....with all the information that i need.
I feel that to be able to work with young people and especially the youth its very CRUCIAL and NECESSARY that in making the projects activities and to have a response thats going to involve them they should be part of the project,they should be and have a say as well as PARTICIPATE in the DESIGN,MANAGEMENT and IMPLEMENTATION of the project in order for it to succeed.
OUR bottom line will be looking at how to STRENGTHEN PEER EDUCATION IN KIMILILI for BEHAVIOR CHANGE.
We will also be looking at ways and means of the Role of the Church,Young People and HIV/AIDS.
In the process of me being there i will be trying to see if two stategies will be able to work for both the in and out of school youth:
Infotainment..... Information as well as Entertainment
Edutainment.......Education as well as Entertainment
How will i do this?
I will be doing face-to-face interviews,Group discussions,Questionnaires,and Focus Group Discussions with a wide number of respondents.
I will also be looking at peer education with them as an intervention where they disseminate information among the groups of young people and encourage behavior change.As a result of them being in a group of what id like to refer to as "SOCIAL NETWORK" where they are free amongst their peers and talk freely!
We will look at School shows as a means of talking to them providing things like music,drama and competitions and Education sessions that address Teen Pregnancy,Drug Use and abuse,Abstinence,HIV/AIDS and STI's
We will have School Clubs and Forums that we will be talking and venting out on what we need to talk about
Lat but NOT least we will have Events ,concerts,film shows,football games.....(where even girls are involved as agents for change and they are empowered in communities where its felt they cant play a BOYS GAME ) dramas and dances as well as inter-School Debates.
We will be making posters,caps,and pamplets and flip charts that target a specific audience and age group
I wish to point out that i will be seeking to
1.Alway involve the youths in the planning of this program and project and the General community as well as the administration and the local leaders as well as parents where need be.
2.I wish to incorporate adequate research into the program and the intervention to have at least 100% result on this and to evaluate its impact.
3.I wish to research results and to refine and improve the project as time goes by and to improve the strategies and messages that we will be giving....and
MOST IMPORTANT: To motivate the peers educators and especially the Girl Child with appropriate compensation and provide constant managerial guidance to keep the peer educators of Kimilili busy and enthusiastic about the overall project objectives!
I do hope that in a nutshell rather than give you the longer version....it will kick off ...

Thank you for your input. All sounds just the sort of thing Rev. Wasike and I have been hoping for. I would like to ask you if there is a possibility of introducing to the project the aspect that the peer-to-peer exchange is not just local, but national and international as well? I think that by combining your infotainment and edutainment elements in exchanges with other Kenyan youth groups would heighten the CBSM youths sense of responsibility and develop their leadership skills. If we can use Internet technology we can create an international platform for the social networking you speak of.

There was a peer education program what should i call it outline that i felt that may b of help that we worked on sometime back with the UNFPA i felt that Ok it may be of help if a few of us went through it......then comented an you would try to see if its compatible with what happens and if its what you wanted.....
Lia while working on this there are a few factors that i am getting into place like ok.....i have to let you know that while working with these youths its necessary that and its helpful that in making the program activities relevant and appealing,careful guidance and facilitation is necessary to keep the young people focused on some high priority issues
Eg i will have to look at or we will have to look at the population size of Kimilili,The Urbanization issues how urbanized and modern are they?There is the Socio economic Status and the access to the health Services and as well as what i call KAPS thats Knowledge,Attitudes and Practices .......... the age levels and the levels of education this i have to do and in this way we do have a before-and-after survey result that could be able to help and give a comparable scale where we will know what the program effects are and what we feel like isolating we isolate from the other effects.
I know you are trying to tell me that we should be able to get a project.....that seeks to be cutting across the board and ok when that is creative and innovative.....will do that!Thank you for the quick response!
Moses, I see that we really have to get our youth vision program up and running on Nabuur as quickly as possible. Poor Romina as been a bit overloaded with our project. When we do get the youth program up, we will have to transfer all the information here to that project.

The Kimilili HIV/AIDS prevention in Water,Sanitation and Hygiene Education Programme.
After having have had a very successfull and very fruitful Meeting with Rev and Dan....Excuse me but i always shorten their names to make it easire for me... this is what i am coming up with..... and its allowed to make corrections if its necessary.......i have been and will be in hospital for a while after being mugged and a friend of mine from overseas being shot on the arm who left last night for treatment but that should not discourage us.....i will get beck on my two feet!Its NOT so serious but i am OK!No need for panik and worry!
The issue at hand is that the HIV/AIDS pandemic has pushed the coping mechanisims of poor communities of Kimilili to the limit.About 60 per cent of the opportunistic deseases ( diarrhoea,Malaria,Skin and Eye infections and other diseases that are as a result of using untreated water and the like)are due to inadequate water and Sanitation facilities.
DESCRIPTION of the PROJECT: The WASHE......Water,Sanitation,and Hygiene Education Programme is run by a Community Based Organisation by the name of the CBSM Kenya in Kimilili and it seeks to have rural and peri-urban people of Kimilili to achieve the progressive realisation of the RIGHT to good health,by increasing the availability of safe and sustainable water supplies,improved sanitation facilities,hygiene practices and nutrition at household,community and school levels.The programme USES WATER SUPPLY as an entry point ,a niche an opening and provides other services that aim to prevent and manage opportunistic infections;improving personal and food hygiene practices and enhacing food security through backyard small-scale vegetable production.Hygiene and Health Education in communities and schools is reinforced through the use of participatory methodolgies such as intergrated life-skills for WASHE,primary health care and HIV/AIDS.
The WASHE project promotes community based planning,which results in the development and implementation of Household Action Plans (HAP's),Village Action Plans(VAP's),Group Action Plans(GAP's),Individual Action Plans(IAP's),and even School Action Plans(SAP's).
Cards are used for each and every action plan to see the planning of home and school improvements as well as the develoment of the villages.The Household action plan for example,will be able to help to document the family profile including orphans and vulnerable children (OVC's) and heads of Households (child and Women headed households since they bear the brunt)and it will be used as an educational tool to provide key messages on HIV/AIDS prevention in local languages.
Capacity building for community based disease prevention and control through water,Sanitation and Hygiene promotion a low cost management with a solution to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS and opportuistic infection.The project will seek to address at promoting household food security and income generation for and to essentially build and to help in shoring up coping mechanisms for OVC's and HIV/AIDS families and the Community at large to have a sustenance plan!
I have just completed this and its a document that i was working on after our meeting.....i will have it ready by the end of Monday..
NB:Moses was working on this right afterhis meeting with a few people from the Kimilili project.I do hope that you will respond to it ASP so that he can get the go ahead to continue.

I send you all my wishes for a rapid and complete recovery. We are having a crisis of our own with having to relocate and rebuild school temporarily in Kimilili. This means our youth vision program will also temporarily have to go on the back burner for some weeks. We will get in touch with you, when we are out of the worse.

thank you very much for sending us the link. I have put it on my bookmark page. I send you a warm welcome in joining our village. Are you just wanting to get a feel of things for a while, or do you have any area of interest that you would like to work on?
Have you had experience in writing grant applications or organising funding activities (she says hopefully)? Do you know of anyone who would be willing to work together with us and help our projects find proper funding?
We have at least two major projects (e.g. building a new school and a clean water project), as well as numerous smaller projects (e.g. youth vision project, nutrition and school garden, and children literacy project) that all need someone with funding experience to help them advance along.
Any advice you can give to us, would be greatly appreciated.

We all had wonderful moments during the end of school term ceremonies last week. We were so happy that the ceremonies took place in the new compound of the school.
However, it was every busy day for me since I had to attend various meetings with different stake holders of our CBSM projects.
We had general meetings that involved the following:
1. Community –guardians, neighbours, etc. This meeting concerned the care and upkeep of the children and the school
2. Establishing a new fundraising committee. Fortunately, Mr. Edward Makona, Mr. Wanaswa , and Ms. Florence Ghety travelled with me from Nairobi to attend these meetings. They are our Nairobi elected members and we’ve voted in our Kimilili members during this meeting (more later)
3. A meeting with the community leaders

Top on Agenda besides celebrations was:
Members raised concern that the landlord had started selling the adjacent plots to the ¼ acre plot where our school now is. Hence locking us out to expand our current land size (to a needed ¾ acre) and reducing the playing ground of the children since the new buyer of the plot has already fenced his potion. The landlord was fortunately present at the meeting and defended his action by saying that he has not heard from the school board despite having approached them numerous times with offers to sell the land to the school.
We had hoped to rent the land for the next year or two, or until we could raise enough funds to purchase the land and build a new permanent school. It now appears as if we must act quickly and effectively to purchase the land (3/4 acre) or run the risk of losing our present facilities in the time ahead.
It was a very constructive and positive discussion. We all agreed that that the landlord should endeavour to moves the new land owner to another portion of land; to allow the children to play and to allow us time to raise the funds to purchase the land that we are on now, as well as enough land for expansion of the school to one meeting our needs.
This means expanding from our temporary facilities of a 5 classroom building to a permanent facility with 8 classrooms, 3 office (principal, teachers room, medical officer), and kitchen. Currently, the children have no playing field and a very small garden. We would like to offer them an area to play and a larger school garden. We estimate that the minimal amount of land that could contain these would be ¾ acre. That would cost 12,000 USD.
We must now pursue all avenues of fundraising to raise the needed capital. If you have any suggestions about what we can do, please write us (cbsmkenya (at) yahoo (dot) com). If you know how we could in the short term raise 10% of this sum to place as a deposit and thus insuring that the landlord will not sell the land, we’d be grateful. If you know of any organisation or company who would be willing to help finance this purchase we would be very glad to receive the information.
