Create a Website for CBSM

Status: Finished
Step:
1

First, we create a website (using the free web editing software weebly.com) that not only offers important information about CBSM, but also builds communication and connection between those of us in CBSM and those living elsewhere.

The information needed on the site (http://benando.weebly.com/) is: our goal, missions, and objectives, and expressing need for sponsorship both financially, as well as through other efforts.

Eventually, we wish to be able to create a professional website. For this purpose we would need outside help.

We endeavor to write regular blog posts in the community blog page of the site. We would like to find possible links to other similar sites or blogs.

We still need to register a PayPal account and figure out how to implement it into our website.

Hello,

We have agreed to redo the website for BBSM. I mentioned to Lia that I needed a few days to look over the weebly site and start planning.

As a note, my colleague, Matt Armitage, will be joining the group. He will be part of the team working on the new site. Feel free to communicate with him as you would me.

Regards,
Catherine

I wanted to clarify that the website we build will not be hosted on Weebly. It will be hosted on one of our (WebHost Wales) servers. After the development site is completed, we will purchase a domain name for BBSM and move the development site to the live server. This will give BBSM a more professional web presence than a free site hosted on Weebly. It will also allow us to customise any payment processing solutions, or build one from scratch, that work for BBSM (which is a huge issue). O.k., here is a run down of our process. Our programmers work in Agile teams, specifically SCRUM teams. As such, the development of the BBSM site will happen in phases, each phase can be broken down into two parts (requirements gathering and coding). The first part involves members of the nabuur and BBSM community letting us know how they want the site to look and what features/functionality they would like to have. We will put together a "to-do" list from this information and get a final o.k. from Rev. Wasiki and Lia. We will then move into the coding part. During this time, my programmers will code the various requests gathered during the first part of the phase. Any additional requests/changes will be put into a queue to be discussed after the coding is done. To state it another way, I do not alter requirements after we have started coding. Once coding is done, we will update the development site with the new code and discuss any change requests that are in the queue. If the site is ready to go live, then we will purchase the domain and move the code over. If there are additional changes that need to be made, then we will make another "to-do" list and begin another coding session. This phase is repeated until the site is ready to go live. That's our process. I will have a skeleton site on the development server within the next few days that everyone can take a look at. We have looked over the current site and think that there is alot of good visual resources to work with. I wanted to clarify that the website we build will not be hosted on Weebly. Our programmers work in Agile teams, specifically SCRUM teams. As there is already a website up, I think the best way to proceed is to have a discussion about things that Lia, Rev. Wasike and everyone else likes and dislikes about the current site.

What do you want to keep? What do you want to change? Do you have an overriding vision of the colour scheme? How do you want visitors to 'feel' when they visit the site? What are your priorities for the new site? What works, what doesn't?

Catherine

Dear Catherine,

I'll write Florence soon and ask her to give her opinion. Rev. Wasike is away at the moment because of a death in the family. He will undoubtedly answer you as soon as he returns.

Here are my answers:

What do you want to keep?

I think we wish to keep the structure simple. We would also like to keep the blog so that there is life to the site; a reason for people to come back. I also think Rev. Wasike wants to keep the other pages of information.

Having said that, each of the pages’ content of information needs improving. We need help in this area.

What do you want to change?

The people who have given us feedback say that the community blog should be “seen” right from the start. Obviously, there has to be a homepage, but we need the visitor to see or find the blog right off.

The donor and sponsorship page has to link to viable online payment facilities (need to find one). Mamamikes should also be included (need Rev. Wasike to give student profiles (requirement for paying school fees) and give examples of supplies they need (for school supply gift certificates)).

I would also like to set up a section or page where companies (either in Kena or international) who sponsor BBSM can be represented or linked.

Rev. Wasike is setting up various projects: e.g. literacy, water and catchment, HIV/Aids, etc. These projects are going to be collaboration with various schools (see songcircle.ning.com), organizations, and individuals. It is a question whether these projects warrant a “project” page, or we just continue with updates in the community blog.

Do you have an overriding vision of the colour scheme?

Since BBSM is not in Kimilili, a rural area near Mount Egan, perhaps some nature colours indigenous to that area.

How do you want visitors to 'feel' when they visit the site?

I would like for the site to awaken the people’s interests, the enthusiasm and activity of BBSM come through, that people want to enter in a dialogue, that people want participate in the projects, that people and companies sponsor these activities.

What are your priorities for the new site?

A professional layout. The donor and sponsorship information rectified.

What works, what doesn't?

I can’t answer this since I was the person who put the site together.

warm regards,

Lia

I would also keep the information about BBSM on the site because most people will want to know more about the school and activities. What do you want to change? Hi Catherine

Sorry its taken me so long to reply to you- I was at sea last week. I will try to answer your questions. I read Lia's answers, and I do agree with everything she said too.

What do you want to keep?
I would definitely keep the blog. Like Lia said- this is the heart of the website and it keeps people coming back to look. I would also keep the information about BBSM on the site because most people will want to know more about the school and activities.

What do you want to change?
Maybe simplify the structure a little more. The information about the school seems spread over a couple of pages, ie. home, projects, about us and the blog. Possibly the structure here could be different, but I don't really know how.

Do you have an overriding vision of the colour scheme?
I think reds/oranges would be more suitable because of the colours you see in the photos that are on the site. But this should really be Rev. Wasike's choice.

How do you want visitors to 'feel' when they visit the site?
I would want to feel welcomed, and inspired I think. Probably want to feel curious and therefore get involved. I do think that the photos and blog inspire these things already, but maybe it could come out more with a different structure.

What are your priorities for the new site?
I think the priorities, like Lia said, are to set up an online payment system, and to make it easy to use. Also the structure of the site so that it looks professional.

What works, what doesn't?
I think it all works essentially, but could be improved. Only the payment system (right now involves contacting Rev. Wasike personally) can be completely revised.

Hope that helps!
Flo

This will be an excellent opportunity for the school project to give you an interview about being an insurance underwriter. We are trying to set up school project for the older children's group where they get to know different professions and trades. Seth (from Nabuur) has also agreed to give an interview. Dear Daniel,

Rev. Wasike also was very excited to have met you and partook of fruitful discussion. Thank you for mentioning your visit on Dec. 4th. This will be an excellent opportunity for the school project to give you an interview about being an insurance underwriter. We are trying to set up school project for the older children's group where they get to know different professions and trades. Seth (from Nabuur) has also agreed to give an interview.

I will talk to Rev. Wasike soon and ask him to explain in detail what your plans are. Do you have any particular projects you would like to do with the children in the future?

Please accept my gratitude for your continued interest in the Kimilili project.

kind regards,

Lia
