Small-scale Farming Project Plan: Research

Status: Finished
Step:
2

The goal of the Small-scale Farming Project Plan task is to make a practical and well-founded plan for a school garden that provides the most essential food for the school children. The first phase in o achieving this is to do the following research:

• Analyse which crops are suitable (regarding to nutritional values, soil, water, climate, resistance against illnesses, costs, yields etc.)

• Research the Nabuur forum, (e.g., Khaparapada), for discussions about organic farming, no digging, no tilling, no outside inputs, permanent beds, drip irrigation etc.

• Search for literature and experts and reviews on these methods. Are they as worthwhile as they appear? Do they indeed enhance the yield on the long term? Are these solutions cheap, low tech, sustainable, cradle-to-cradle?

We are in need of Nabuur neighbours who can point us in the right direction to other projects or websites concerning small-scale farming. We need someone who can supervise our core project team (http://www.nabuur.com/en/user/marte/profile) in this work.

Hi

I am willing to provide guidance on a school project once i know the following

1. Town, City & Country of project/s
2. How big land
3. Type of Soil
4. Accessability to water
5. Climate
6. Number of persons who will be part of this project.

Once i can have all this information i will liase with the some of our students so that we can set up a correspondance with the school that needs the garden.

Thanks
Malcolm

Dear Malcolm,

Thank you. The only info I can give you definitely, is Kimilili in Kenya, near Mount Egan (don't know if that helps with soil). Rev. Wasike is travelling from Nairobi to Kimilili today and there is no internet access in 70 miles. Hopefully, he will get in contact with me by early next week and I will pass on the questions to him. Is there any way I can connect to per email. Mine is cbsmkenya at gmail dot com.

On another note, a silly question, but do you have a sister or relative called Nadema? Nadema used to be a friend of mine, but we lost contact after she changed jobs.

Hope to hear from you soon.

best regards,

Lia

Dear Malcolm,

Just received word that Rev. Wasike has a plot of land ready to garden. Can you send your email so that I can forward the email I've written to our team. We could really need help choosing the types of vegetables and other practical information.

Thank you.

Hi Lia,

Great things you're doing here!

I like the idea to involve kids in gardening. I'm attaching some docs that might be helpful - guides for making compost in tropics and raised bed.

Glad to see that Ken joined the village, he's doing a great job helping nabuur villages involved in agriculture. I believe you can benefit a lot from him. Did he already send his DVD's to Kimilili?

If I come across anything else that might be of use for you I'll post it.

Keep up good work!

Dear Sonja,

Thank you so much for sending the files. I will be sure to put them on our website (www.cbsmgarden.weebly.com), as source material. The website isn't up and running yet, first we have to get our garden plot layout and the seeds planted.

The children are working with community volunteers planting the school garden. Eventually, we hope to extend the garden project with nutrition lessons and cooking classes.

Once again, thank you for your feedback.

bye, lia

Hi All,

I am new to this site. But this is one great site that I have stumbled on.
As I read the various posts I am getting great benefit for my initiatives on the ground.

I am mobilising youth on the ground to be able to view agriculture as a business. This site will play a major role in achieving this goal.

Dear Ndagwe,

Please do join this group and we can exchange information and experiences over the next months.

I noticed taht Eldoret is (relatively) near Kimilili. Perhaps there is a possibility, when the garden project is up and running and Rev. Wasike is in Kimilili (he is more often in Nairobi with his ministry) for you go meet and discuss practical project developments.

Please do stick around

best regards,

Lia
