Small-scale Farming Project Plan: Research

The goal of the Small-scale Farming Project Plan task is to make a practical and well-founded plan for a school garden that provides the most essential food for the school children. The first phase in o achieving this is to do the following research:
• Analyse which crops are suitable (regarding to nutritional values, soil, water, climate, resistance against illnesses, costs, yields etc.)
• Research the Nabuur forum, (e.g., Khaparapada), for discussions about organic farming, no digging, no tilling, no outside inputs, permanent beds, drip irrigation etc.
• Search for literature and experts and reviews on these methods. Are they as worthwhile as they appear? Do they indeed enhance the yield on the long term? Are these solutions cheap, low tech, sustainable, cradle-to-cradle?
We are in need of Nabuur neighbours who can point us in the right direction to other projects or websites concerning small-scale farming. We need someone who can supervise our core project team (http://www.nabuur.com/en/user/marte/profile) in this work.

Hello Onono,
You have a great idea. Contibuting to the rehabilitation of the region. However, i have a few issues, i would like to share with you. what kind of education do you want to offer this childen? vocational or formal, do you have some things / small activities you are already doing with them?. in other words you have to start with what you have , then you can begin to expand slowly.
what is the community contribution. land/space, for ownership/and acceptability of the project. This orphanage, how do you expect to identify beneficiaries? You can also persue the idea of having these orphans attached to families because I believe in a child growing up in a family setting, then you can support the child in the family. What is the coverage of this idea.
think along those lines then, a clearer picture of what you want can be shared.
Wish you good luck

Hi Lia,
Please keep me posted on the progress of the garden project. I would be glad to meet Rev. Wasike since I steel have activities in Nairobi as well. I am working on helping to improve lives of others but I do not want to "reinvent the wheel". I want to expand the ideas already on the ground.

Hi all
Is it possible to have a map of the school, perhaps as a WORD document? This would include the school buildings and proposed site for the garden. Do you plan to build a kitchen to cook food for the children? We could look at places to put a water tank or latrine. Could you also include the slope, where is the highest and lowest point? Also show where the sun rises, east and sets west. I need information about the wind direction. What are the health problems, malaria or malnutrition.
I can develop a plan based on permaculture principles for the school. However, I will be away for 2 months, one month in Nepal and another in Cambodia. I can forward the plan to another friend to complete.
Seila, Thank you very much for writing this inquiry. We are in the midst of trying to purchase some land to build a new school, since the present one is only a temporary building. Millicent, a neighbour in Nairobi is writing up a funding application to purchase land for our Nutrition and School Garden project. We are hoping to build a communal kitchen and classroom for cooking training for the children.
So, being away for two months is not critical at this point. Our present garden is small and also temporary. Once we have the funding to buy a 1/2 acre plot than we will send you a sketch and photos right away.
Do you have a project outline from another project you have worked on. Perhaps this will help us orientate ourselves and figure out what we need to write on our funding application.
Will you be completely out of Internet access these next two months? Can you send me an email address of someone I can write if needed? You can send this to me via my email address cbsmkeya (at) gmail (dot) com, please.
Thank you very much.
best regards,
Lia

Dear Lia
Since the school is temporary I understand. DO you have a compost pile, a three way pile is most efficient. Each is filled by adding layers of green garden waste, dry waste and some manure if they have any. When the third pile is reached the first is ready to be used. I apologises as I have not read all of the other posts.
I have been working on a project design document for a school construction and sanitation and health project. I started with a logframe first, since this outlines all the steps in construction. Unfortunately they are still being develop, and not complete as I have had to spend time developing our organisation's business plan and strategy. I will work on developing them some more today. I will be visiting many schools while in Nepal and some in Cambodia, so the 2 months will be very productive in seeing different projects.
Are you sure a 1/2 acre block will be large enough? How many students are there? You will need room for the buildings, kitchen and shelter, water tanks, latrines, fruit orchard, vegetable garden, compost piles, perhaps a stall to sell surplus produce, animal areas such as chickens and goats and play area for the children. Ideally there should be land set aside for a woodlot, to help regenerate the forest been cleared for firewood. However, the design will work with what ever land you have. Ideally a small scale farm should be about 5 ha. I do understand that in developing countries most farmers have small land plots, on average only 1 ha. The conversion is 1 acre = 0.4 ha. Therefore the average farm is 2 1/2 acres. There is no harm in asking for more land in the funding application. Particularly if you are also teaching the students about sustainable farming methods and as a demonstration for the community. I believe training students on sustainable farming is the most useful education for them, since most of the poor are farmers, usually between 80-90% of the poor are farmers in developing countries.
I hope that helps with the planning. I would be happy to answer any more questions you have. Perhaps you can pass me a copy of the funding application or tell me what information you need.
Regards
Seila

Dear Ken,
Thank you for all the DVD’s you sent me. Thank you for all the info. I am applying it in my own vegetable patch. It is working. Got half a pocket of potatoes off a square metre. So would imagine about 10 pounds per square yard. This off previously dead low, carbon soil. Sure next crop will be better. Got yams coming up on same spot already. Want to plant herbs and spices. I will send photos.
Your advise is so simple. People do not believe me when I tell them. I am so excited about growing things now. This coming from a commercial plum farmer. May you be blessed this holy season a thousand times more than you blessed me with you help.Jeremy Karsen, middagkrans@mwebbiz.co.za

I am delighted to announce that the DVDs that Ken sent to me have arrived, I looked at the farming methods there in and I am optimistic that this will help the community, which I believe everybody MUST embrace. I will update you on the current situation of the garden, we have actually done it the wrong way and I guess we shall to start a fresh again, now that the whole procedure is well understood.
Thank you Ken and all the Serere neighbors. Moses

We have already started several gardens in Jinkfuin community and the people working on them have benefitted from the DVDS we received from Ken. We watched the DVDs and got so many lessons and there women and men already running gardens, good ones! Kimilil

Project room: Kyomya, Uganda
We have been working on improving farming techniques for almost a year. Unfortunately, the farmers are planting small plots of land that only feed their family. There is no other choice but to try new techniques to improve the output of their plot. Ken Hargesheimer suggested the "no till" farming techniques as well as the "drip system". Both have proven effective at increasing production by at least 5 fold. The time is now for Kyomya to become a model agricultural village. [nabuur.com
HI
The stevia plants are battling to grow here.
And you will definately have very little success in Zambia with them. They need alot of care.
South Africa is one of the mian exporters of organic produce, so that is not possible. You need to check and create local markets in your communities first, then venture to surrounding areas.
send me your email and i will send you some information on sustainable development.

Dear Seila,
Thank you ever so much for writing the above. Would it be possible for you to send us the project document for the school construction, sanitation, and health project. This is something near and dear to Rev. Wasike's heart. Once we manage to get our CBSM garden vocational training program up and running (even if we are just limping along), we have to next tackle our objective of building a school. Since this is an area we have no expertise in whatsoever, we could use your help in developing a realistic proposal.
The 1/2 acre block is not meant to hold the whole project. We are estimating 1/2 to 3/4 of an acre for the school, with another 1/4 acre just for a small garden plot. We are also aiming at another 2-3 acres for the garden project, where this land would be divided up into 1/4 to 1/2 acre sub-plots, which would be managed by small garden co-ops.
I really like the idea of land for reforestation. Did I tell you about our efforts to start up small-scale businesses producing and selling (apparently) smoke free cooking briquettes that are made out of bio-waste (corn cobs and cassava)? Maybe we should discuss this as a possibility for your projects?
Thank you.
all the best,
Lia
