WE STILL NEED VOLUTEER TEACHERS
The Sajos Academy opens on jan 5 next year our first term , but we don't have enough teachers and the number of children is increasing daily.
The volunteer teachers are asked to report before the end of next month (Nov or DEC ) so we can have arrangements how we can host them among other issues.we have made arrangements on accomondation but food and other personal need is upon yourself but we will arrange them after arrival

may i say thank for your advice it is good if your school is for business but before you give any ideas or information go to the background of the project to know how the project is being run because we do not charge anything to this children s this is school of needy children s

Hi Daniel,

It is good that you are providing free education to children who cannot afford to pay for it. On the other hand, the education that you provide to the students must be in accordance with you country's education system, even if you are providing it free to the students. This can be ensured only through full-time, trained and experienced teachers, who will be available only if they are formally employed on a salary basis. Not charging any fees from the students does not justify that they will be taught only through volunteer teachers, since you cannot provide for the teachers' salaries.

Anyway, I can see that you have your own opinions on this, and I hope your efforts meet with success.

it is well and good how we run the school ,we need volunteers teachers to teach the childrens only on holidays that's all and we make it clear on our last post

Hi Daniel,

I agree with you that volunteer teachers are a good option to fill in gaps, especially during holidays. Could you maybe write a kind of advertisement what kind of people you are looking for, when and what activities they should carry out? Then I could try to search a bit different internet fora or facebook groups and post it there. I think lots of students (at least I know that in Germany volunteering in African schools is very common among young people) would love to come to Kenya, but often it's hard to get in touch with the right people.

best,
Maria

And for how long would you like them to stay? (I would advise for a minimum stay of say 2 months). And when are the holidays? (or would you also like to have a volunteer staying for the nornal school year?

Thanks,
Maria

HI Daniel,

I tried to register your volunteer opportunity at http://www.idealist.org/if/idealist/en/MyIdealist/Register/1-agreeToTerm... . But it says that your email adress is already in use. Did you already register there? Otherwise, I don´t think that it s very difficult to post the volunteer position there, could you try to do it? Happy to help if you encounter any difficulty, I just wanted to make sure that you did not register yet. Here is an example of what kind of information you should provide (maybe a bit less...): http://www.idealist.org/if/i/en/av/VolunteerOpportunity/175481-33

Good luck,
Maria

Hi Daniel-

What is the current status of teachers at the school? How many are there?

I see that you posted an opportunity with Idealist - did that work well for you?

Maria had recommended that you (and/or you and the volunteers) work on writing a job description for the volunteer teaching positions - did that get done?

I would suggest also maybe considering a brochure that talks about what volunteers can expect during their experience in the local community.

It would be great if you can provide us with an update.

Thank you!

Jennifer

Hi Daniel,

I posted some time ago a good example for a description of a volunteer position. http://www.idealist.org/if/i/en/av/VolunteerOpportunity/175481-33
The problem with somebody writing it for you, is that only you have the information it needs. Could you maybe write together:
- what are the teachers going to teach (subject) - how often, alone or with another teacher, how many pupils are in the class, what age?
- where could they live (housing)
- what about possible free time activities (would the volunteers have a chance to get to know your community etc.?)

I think this would be a good start. Could you also send the link to your school regisration on idealist and global gateway (can't find it), so that we could see how to improve it? I had the experience with other schools, that the wording matters a lot when it comes to finding schools and volunteers.

best,
Maria

Hi Daniel-

Thank you for sharing the posting. I think Maria is correct in that it needs to have additional details about what you are expecting and what a volunteer teacher can expect if they come to work with your organization. The example she shared is a good one. Try to think about this from the perspective of going to another country yourself - what would you want to know before you visited? Adding some additional background about your organization would also be good.

Some ideas of other details you could include are:

1. What does a typical school day consist of?
2. What classes are taught during the school day?
3. What learning materials if any are available in the classroom?
4. How many students per class.
5. What age group of students would the volunteer be working with?
6. Does your organization help make accommodation arrangements for the volunteer?
7. Does your organization assist with transportation between the volunteer's residence while there to the school or is this something they will be responsible for on their own? If they are responsible, you may want to share transportation options and the distance from the nearest accommodations to the school.
8. Information pertaining to anything necessary for an overseas volunteer required by your government (such as specific immunizations) would also be helpful.

Those are some thoughts to get you started. If you can provide additional details it will make it easier for the online volunteers to perhaps help you draft a post for Idealist.com with more detail. This may help you gain more inquiries about possibly coming to help.

Kind regards-

Jennifer
