Urgent task: help Eddy buy a good modem

I received a request for an urgent task from Eddy. Eddy and I experience some communication problems due to the fact that Eddy has frequently got internet problems. Internet has been installed, but still it isn't possible to use the internet often. So, we communicate through sms messages (which is expensive as well). It is quite expensive for Eddy to travel to Jinja all the time to use the internet in an internet cafe. Eddy has asked the provider what to do and the provider responded Eddy needs to install a good modem but it will cost 250 usd. Eddy can afford to pay for the monthly subscription which is 25 usd. But he can't afford to pay for the modem at this time. So, Eddy needs the help of the neighbours. I can't afford to pay for the comple 250 usd myself too right now, so I would like to ask if there are any neighbours that could please help and maybe we can split the costs. Or if there are neighbours that can share their thoughts and maybe we could find a good solution for Eddy. Thank you!

After I added this message in the project room, I called a friend. He has a modem for me which he wants to give for free. But...I don't know if this modem will work in Uganda. It is a zyxel P 2602 H D1A. can anyone help me find out if it is no problem to use this in Uganda? (I have got no idea whether things are different, like wires or things). Does anyone know?
Esther
Hi Esther
I don't know, but you could try asking some of the Ugandan LRs who run computer centres.
Closest would be Paul Bulenzi, LR of Jinja Central

If Paul does not know, you could also try
Timothy Walsh, LR of Hapa (in Kampala)

Sabbath Obua, LR of Anai Acoke (in Lira)

Thanks Mary! I am going to ask them if they know! Esther
Hello Esther,
One can actually get a good modem at 120,000 UGX, that's about 60 dollars in uganda.
The most common model offered by uganda telecom i.e. the service provider, is normally wireless HUAWEI FWT. This does not include connection fee and subscription if Eddy wants to connect to the internet.
Best regards,
Moses
Hi Moses
I talked to Uganda telecom service about installing a good net in my office kisozi bze am using phone but it's not good on net, they told me to install a good net at 250usd plus modem.
That is the information i got from them pleas if you have uganda telecom line call free on this 300 it's a tall free line.
EDDY
Esther,
Uganda telelcom will not use any modems sent from out side or anywhere else. The reason they give is that those modems sent from abroad are not configured to their systems.
So, one would have to buy a modem directly from them. I already sent you the amount they charge for a good modem (60) dollars without connection and subscription fees.
I hope that will help.
Moses
Hello Moses,
Thank you so much for your answer. I am going to pass the message on to Eddy. 60 dollars is not that expensive for a modem (I think) and it's much cheaper than the 250 dollars Eddy mentioned. Maybe Eddy can have a good look around to see where he can get a good modem for that amount of money.
Thanks, Esther
Hello Esther,
eddy can actually go the uganda telelcom offices and will be given a modem at that price if there is an increase it will not be more than 20 dollars.
Best regards,
Moses

Thanks Moses!
I received a message from Eddy who has been in touch with Paul from Jinja central. Paul from Jinja central replied to Eddy that a Dutch modem works perfectly in Uganda, as Paul has received one from Holland too and his is working well.
So I will tell Eddy all tips and tricks and Eddy can decide what to do :)
Thanks! Esther
Hi
Esther to install a good net they want 250usd but when you have your modem which i don't know the price they can only charge you for labour.
Thanks
Eddy
you will get mine for free Eddy, so it is just the costs to install them ;)
Esther
Hi Moses , i have got enough information from them that modem will work.
Eddy.
Hi all,
I've just read the discussion and think there are two things being confused:
1. buying a modem (only the box)
2. buying a modem + and getting an internet connection with it
You're right about the modems (just the box). They are not too expensive, ones from Holland could work in Uganda etc. etc.
The problem is getting an internet connection with it.
Eddy mentioned having a regular phone connection, but will probably have to register for internet access as well, once he gets a foreign modem. If it's a regular phone line this may give him a connection of maximum 56kb per second. Most of the time it will be slower. (For those in Holland: remember dialing in to your provider, waiting for pages to load? Internet 10 years ago. That's the speed)
What's in the 250 USD deal?
The 250 USD deal includes a modem (the HuaWei), which is actually an advanced phone that connects to the internet (wireless broadband). This modem is indeed about 60 USD.
Having this modem, Eddy would still need to subscribe with an internet provider which costs 190 USD for the wireless broadband.
The monthly fee will then be around 25 USD (90,000 UGX if I'm not mistaken).
Hope this clarifies,
Pelle
Pelle,
you are very right, i happen to use the same services and actually the details you have given are very correct for the ugandan case.
