This task is created for the third group of the world school working for HAU and Kisozi. Fleur and Alis can introduce themselves here and keep us up to date about what they are working on.
Project: Supporting Orphans in Kisozi

Hello!
We are Alis and Fleur from the Netherlands and we are both 17 years old (almost 18!) We are excited to finally begin with our task. We have a lot of questions ready to ask. Like, for instance, what are the cultural boundaries in Uganda, especially Kisozi? Should the campaign be in English? Because we do not know wether the children are able to understand basic English. We are very glad to have your help from Uganda and hope to hear from you soon.
Alis and Fleur
Hello Fleur and Alis,
Thanks for introducing yourselves. The campaign you are going to do can be done in English. I think it would be a good idea if you can explain here what your campaign for HAU and the children in Kisozi is about?
Esther
Our campaign would be about preventing HIV/AIDS and Malaria. And we attended to make posters and presentations for children. Our idea was to do this in a fun way, easy to understand for children. Do you all have some ideas, to improve our project?
I think the idea you wrote me about, about making brochures for the children and posters is a very good idea. Perhaps you can even come up with info the teachers can use in lessons, at school etc.??
Our ideas so far:
- Brochures
- Posters
- Stickers
- Video
- Information / presentation teachers
- Little game to show the massive extension to children
We are trying to make up a catchy and funny slogan that
is easy to keep in mind for the children.
More ideas are always welcome!
Hello Fluer and Alis
It's very great to hear such ideas from you. What a caring heart for our children who are very prone to this pandemic!
I have just started following your discussions from this task.
It's a good idea to print brochures, posters, fliers and even make videos.
Most of these that we are talking about have always been in place. They have been used and still little impact has been realized.
My suggestion is that when you will think of making all those; try to find out different ideas from the local people here in Uganda so they can advice on the best way to put up all those. For instance, you may have the need to make films and videos on HIV/AIDS. Which language are you going to use for the video? Obviously you can not use dutch when the local people can't understand. However good that may be, it will always be the worst for the community.
I read you are interested in preventing Malaria and HIV among the school children; well you should be able to identify the age groups you are interesting in dealing with. you can not tell me that you will print posters with doll-like kind of drawings and you expect a man of 25 to be interested in reading the contents. Different kinds of drawings and writing can only be used for different age groups.
I support the idea of making up presentations and information booklets for the teachers in schools. This would be a very great resource to use when it comes to sex education as well as HIV/AIDS sensitization in schools and the community. My only addition to this is that as much as you try to make the presentations in hard copies, others who can also get access to computers and projectors might also need them upon requisition for Peer trainings in institutions of high level. I mean you need to put some in power point presentations too.
Stickers are always a great deal as far as delivering information and selling the name and the activities of the organization are concern. When you shall be making these stickers, make sure you coordinate with Esther and Eddy so they may grant you people the right to use their logo on the stickers, this will give them some good picture!
I know children like games so much and they can easily learn quickly when something is put in game-like and funny way. This would be very good if you can put some posters on hard cards and puzzles where they can play and learning done.
I have not yet gotten to know more about your needs well. I shall be very grateful to help in whatever way i can
Regards,

Thanks for replying Eric ;) I had already told them they would have to get in touch with you too ;)
You are right there, Ojok. For any communication campaign to be successful, the starting point must be the demographic profile of the target population. Most professionals in Communication will not proceed on a task unless the demographic profile of the target population is provided to them.

True! Fleur and Alis, I think you need to find out more from Eddy, Eric and me about the population and set the age groups. If you want to use certain things like logos or photos, just ask. Im in favour of games and stickers too.
This is a very interesting idea. However, by it being known as "world" is it really a global "do" in the main sense. For if it is, then thats brilliant as people on this forum are from different countries and areas hence then i think your consultation must also include translating the material in different languages. There are many countries who from ages of 6-9 thats primary 1- primary 4 others further, education is taught in local language in a bid to promote culture and this is not optional although english is also taught. you already got brilliant ideas so nothing much to add other than maybe comics.
HIV and malaria have ground as they are experienced on a grand scale, may be should include other things too, like about marriage, how young children are forced to marry and solutions in form of a story but giving the right directions for a shelter forexample , if any. How to avoid things like diarr and dysentry which are still claiming peoples lives in thousands and they think they have been bewitched. I think, it would be interesting if there were short series covering alot of basic issues too. From toilets use, now am not streching it for i recently read that in 2009, a man in rural uganda had been advised not to use the toilet that had been newly constructed by a NGO for he would lose his ability to have children. He dared, but the other villagers are still not using the toilet for the same fear.
FOr, HIV dont just state facts, look out for the myths and quench them. eg the one of sleeping with a virgin when you have HIV cures you. Many girls are young dying as they are preyed upon by their own relatives.

Hello everybody!
Thank you very much for your replies and your interests on the matter. When we started to design our campaign we had a couple of questions indeed.
We thought the campaign was for schoolchildren, but we actually don't know from which age they are. We want to ask on which agegroup we should focus mainly on? At which age AIDS can be prevented the best? We believe it is the best to start the campaign for children before they become sexually active. In this way we can prevent some contamination. Ofcourse some children are already HIV positive and they need to know how to have safe sex. What are your views about this?
Secondly, we would want to know which language we have to use. Do the children in Kisozi understand (simple) english? We are only able to write / speak English, French, German and ofcourse Dutch.
Eric, we are helped a lot by your advices! We are planning to make a power point presentation and possibly a video about the subject.
Greets from the Netherlands!
Fleur & Alis
We have received some fantastic materials from Fleur and Alis: a powerpoint presentation, aids game, posters, materials for both pupils and teachers. The good thing is that teachers in Kisozi considered the materials very useful. On 23rd February, Fleur and Alis will present the project they have worked on at their school. Esther will attend this presentation at their school and thanks to the efforts of their school, we are likely to receive a large number of copies of the materials and wonderful posters made by Fleur and Alis, which will be sent to Kisozi, so that teachers can use the materials for real during their lessons.
