4 girls from the Worldschool - Lynnet, Maike, Marilou and Astrid - are working on a malaria and HIV/AIDS task for HAU. This task was created for them to explain what they are working on and to update us here as well.
Project: Supporting Orphans in Kisozi

Hi everybody!
We are Marilou Vlastuin, Astrid van Stigt, Maike Jongerius and Lynnet Frijling. We are students at the Baarnsch Lyceum in Baarn, the Netherlands. As we are in our final year, we work on a big assignment all highschool students need to do to graduate. Only we have chosen to do this assignment for Wordschool, so that we can work for school and help other people at the same time. We have chosen to work on an assignment for the people in Kisozi, Uganda, by developing educational materials to prevent HIV/Aids and Malaria. Once these educational materials will be ready, the people in Kisozi can use them to learn more about HIV/Aids and Malaria and teach their children about it in school.
We have collected a lot of information about Uganda, so that we know what the country and the people are like. We also contacted people who have been to Uganda who could tell us more. We are still discussing about what materials would work best, and how we can make them. Advice would always be welcome! We soon hope to start actually working on the materials, so that we don't keep Kisozi waiting to long.
We will try to update regulary on this site, so that you can read what we are doing.
Best regards,
Marilou, Astrid, Maike and Lynnet.
Hi gang!
Welcome to Nabuur & Kisozi.
My main piece of advice to you about developing the educational materials is that you should make every effort to ensure that it is "culturally sensitive". What this means is that a brochure for Ugandan youth on HIV or even Malaria should be written and presented in a way that is culturally appropriate. Eddy and other Ugandan neighbours will be able to help advice you on this. Because what is appropriate for Dutch youth may not be the same for Ugandan youth. I believe there are many Ugandan specific resources on the internet so you won't have too much problem in creating soemthing that fits their environment.
Good luck- I look forward to seeing your work in progress :)

Yes you are right Carolyn, because for example you cannot say the sexual organs by their real names. There are safe words used and meaning is not lost

Hi all,
I do not mean to discourage anyone. But my general impression is that there is plenty of resource in all forms including print, audio and video on all aspects of HIV as well as malaria in all affected countries. Apart from 're-inventing the wheel' through creating another set of documents, an attempt could be made to add value to the existing resources on HIV and malaria. For this to happen, the local community must first identify the gaps between what resources are already available, and what more is required, so that neighbours can attempt to fill the gap in resources.
Vijai
Yes i think vijai has a point. There are some very good materials available. The problem is selecting and increasing their access.

Hi there!
Thank you for your advice and responds.
We will be carefull not to make educational materials that don't fit in Uganda's culture, we'll ask our facilitator and local repressentive to help us with that.
I think we'll collect all materials that already excist we can find, and make it into something new, by taking the best parts out of them. I know there are already many materials, so we do not have to start all over.
We will place a picture of ourselves soon, so that people can see who we are!
Byebye!

Hi Lynett- one more piece of advice- if I may :) Last year I heped develop a brochure for consumers (patients) who may receeve blood transfusions in Australian hospitals. One of the most important thing we did ws "test" the brochure before we finally printed it.
We did this by giving the brochure to about 20 patients- asked them to red it and provide us with feedback.
Perhaps you could do something similar- test the brochures with a small group of local youth or local people from Kisozi and see what feedback they give back. You should then refine the brochures/fliers according to the majoritt feedback. Eddy should be able to help you with this part of the process

This task can be closed. This Worldschool group has finished their fantastic materials. The materials will be handed out at schools in Kisozi. The materials can also be found at our website.
