Discuss income generation for the school to become self-sustainable
Status:

The Kilele Junior School is looking to generate more income to allow to buy a new van to transport the children and to admit more needy children.
At the moment the school finances the needy children with the fees from the more privileged ones, and sells ropes that they get for one dollar.
Discuss more ways to generate income for the school. Creative ideas are very welcome!
Project: Village talk

Hi Good day to ya all, i have looked at the pictures of the school kids and wat i came up with is they look like such a well educated beautifull young kidz, im sure they can with the help of there teachers put together a concert example: yellow brick road, put together sum kidy concerts and the local comunaty come and share the intertainment with a small cost then put together some bible storys and record them on dvds or even books. the world needs to educate there kidz the basics of life.
I would love to know more of the town.
Warm Regards

Hi Tony, hi everybody,
I was thinking of quite the same thing.
John, do the kids get some musical education? It would be great to study with them a song, do some drum performance - they could build the drums themselves out of old plastic buckets - and study a dance. You said the school closes in August. Maybe you could organise a summer party the last school day for the kids, their parents and the local community, where the kids could perform, and you could make some little money. This would also help to promote the school.
What do you think?
best,
Maria
Hi Maria
We do not teach music lessons as such but have a lesson on music and movement, i will take a video of this then attache on nabuur.
Thank you

Hi Tony and Maria
Thank you so much for your timely advice, We shall take videos of the children's songs and class activities then send them to nabuur. I do not no whether Tonny you would like them sent personally to you and if you can provide an alnternative email address for mailing.
You want to know about Nairobi.
It is a beautiful city, people are friendly, beautiful buildings, within the city there is a national measeum where you get to see alot of artifacts and stuff on evolution of the African( first kenya) with so many picture illustrations of our Kenyan culture.
Within the town we also have the BOMAS OF KENYA" this is where you get to be entertained by various Kenyan cultural groups, sample their food, visit their traditional homes and interact with people from different backgrounds.
15 to 20 minutes from town, the city is almost surrounded by the National Park, where you get to see different wild animals,eg Lions, giraffes buffaloes, etc, further afield you get to the rhino and elephant sanctuary and the giraffe center, all these places are within driving distance where you can enjoy yourself then get back to your hotel within the city.
There is still much more which you I can tell you about Nairobi, just ask.
Regards
John

Hello!
Besides the concerts and so, you could involve the kids in craftwork and let them learn how to produce items that are typically kenyan. Clothes, commonly used objects and decoration objects, etc., and sell them (to the parents, the community or in the market, if this is possible). You could invite someone who is experienced to teach the children, if you don't have already a craftwork subject.
I don't know anything about the kenyan reality, but I think you should always adapt the suggestions to your culture and society.
Hope I've helped!
Patricia Lorenzo
Thanks Lorenzo for your advice.
WE already have a ropes project where we buy at cheaper rates the sale them slightly more. WE may not go into clothing and such because we cannot afford the machines and the clothing material. We wouldn't want to invest the little we have into a big project such as clothing and textiles. Probably some artwork will do though many of our citizens do not appreciate artwork.
Thank and I take this opportunity to invite you to komarok village project.
Regards
John

Hi John,
It would be good if you could indicate the approximate amount of money required to buy the van. This information will determine the scale on which income needs to be generated, so that the required funds can be made available within a pre-determined time duration. Ideas can then be provided by the neighbours on plans which can achieve your targets for funds within a certain time.

good suggestion Vijai.sounds more focus oriented

Thank you Christie. The suggestion might help neighbours provide specific advice. For example, if the van costs about USD 2000, and the funds are targeted within 3 months, then the search for suitable projects needs to focus only on those where this specific amount can be generated. Hence a post from John on this aspect will help at this stage.
Vijai
Hi Vijai and Christie,
Thanks for engaging in the discussion. I actually had asked this question for the van in the very beginning - somewhere lost in the different comments.
Here is what John had answered on my question:
We did sell the the school van and currently do not have a van yet. What we have done is,out of the sixty children we have registered this term, 30 are from able families. This thirty had already paid for the usual school transport services charged at 50 US dollars per term. What we have done is that we have re- negotiated with a private school transport service provider where he will take the entire 50 dollars but split it into half so that 25 dollars meet the charges for one child from the able family and the other half for one underprivileged child.with this arrangement,we are able to get the children to school comfortably.
This is a temporary 3 months agreement bone out of this gentleman's good heart of giving for a worthy course.
Meanwhile, we managed to raise an equivalent of 3000 US dollars from the old van sold. For us to get a slightly better second hand van, we need 7000 US dollars(dollar exchange is approximately 74 Kenya Shillings) We are going around, pleading with well wishers within the community and outside, to help us raise the remaining 4000 dollars. so far we have managed to raise 1000 and are are still appealing for 3000.
We have entered into an agreement with some ladies from a local NGO who weave very beautiful colored skipping ropes, they sell to us one skipping rope at 1 dollar. We are in turn selling to good friends the same rope at 4dollars each. This is how we have managed to raise the 1000 dollars.(I will send you a picture of the ropes)
We hope to get the van in three to four months."

The idea Christie about a school party was brought up and I still think it´s a very good idea. John, you said you liked this idea as well - would this be something to do before the school closes in august?
I am working on the website to establish a child sponsorship programme - if you have any ideas on this, it would be great to get some different comments on it. The main information can be found under the website task.
best,
Maria
hi john
i havent gone through all the posts to know if this has been suggested before, but just incase it hasnt, it would be good to organise a school fete or a small gathering, where u have games people -kids from around can come play for a token and sell snacks and drinks. if the idea would be adopted i would be glad to see how helpful i can be, you can also reach me via my mail, just incase the nabuur network is clogged.
cheers

If you find the funds for the van, fine but if not there is a simple solution to transporting the kids. Several bicycles each with a trailer to carry 4-6 children. I made one when our two kids were small. They loved it as did the neighborhood kids. Cost is very small. I have plans.
Hi Ken, you have provided a great solution to this problem. These bicycles-trailers can be sustained on a long-term basis without worrying about the expenses for buying a van or high operating and maintenance costs of the van. The funds generated through various activities can be deployed for other more essential facilities for the school. The van can be purchased in future when the savings have increased.
Maria, thanks for your update as above. The solution suggested by Ken can be immediately implemented within the available resources of USD 1000, so that the bicycles-trailers are ready by the time the existing contract with the van service expires.
Vijai
Hi John,
could you give us your opinion on the bicycle idea as transportation mean?
best,
Maria
