The (Bakonjo) Bakonzo are by far the largest ethnic group in the Kasese district. The Bakonzo are a Bantu-speaking people who have lived on the mountain for many generations, and whose culture is adapted to the steep slopes and climate of Mt.
Rwenzori.
Until the 1980's the Bakonzo had their own kingdom. Most of them practice subsistence agriculture.
