Finalising the content of the Kyarumba web-site

Status: Finished

We need to transfer the information of the concept of the Kyarumba Girls Education Fund to the Kyarumba site and present it in an attractive and engaging way. You can find the concept document under "Resources".

Dear Clare,

as I wrote, I am in contact with Marianne and Clare already and will also e-mail Liz and Lissette - last time I checked Lissette had not logged in for several weeks... but I will give it a try!

Have a nice evening,
Eleftheria

Hello all,

WOW! I was 'absent' from Nabuur.com for over a month, and have come back to a beautiful new website! I love it -- the layout, color schemes and, above all, the gorgeous photos. All are very eye-catching! As a very visual person, I can especially appreciate the design of the new website...

I have not kept up with recent posts in this, or the other thread/discussion, so I'm afraid it will take me a bit of time to catch up.

Eleftheria: perhaps you can briefly summarize what most urgently needs to be done at this time? Are there documents that need to be reviewed, from which more content will be added to the website (I see you recently asked Dennis about one; are there others)? Or do you need neighbors to proofread the content that already exists on the website? I will be happy to do either, or both. Sorry if these are redundant questions. I haven't had any time yet to peruse through recent posts. And there have been many the past week (and weeks prior)!

There is an inconsistency on the website that jumped out at me right away - the fund is used by three different names:

1) Kyarumba Educaton Fund
2) Kyarumba Girl Education Fund
3) Kyarumba Girl Child Scholarship Fund

So.... which one is it?

I'll try to get caught up on what I've missed as soon as possible, and will check in again real soon.

Sorry for my long absence... Unfortunately I have to do this now and then due to work/projects that come up - especially during the middle of every semester, and at the end of each one. I just finished a very hectic semester on friday, and am happy to report that I finished all of my end-of-semester (and end-of-the-school-year) work this morning! I started my summer break today 8-) So now, I'm yours (at least between spending time with hubby and family, and working on home projects).

Bye for now,
Marianne

Hi Marianne, welcome back!

Yes, we're definitely rolling along with momentum behind us... but very much in need of a new pair of eyes to look over everything, and to help us write the new content.

You're right, there are three names for the Fund on the website... we've been playing around with all three to see which works best, and I think Eleftheria has recently asked Jessica which she would like us to use (Eleftheria will be clearer on this).

At the moment, the content on the site is mostly from what we had on the test site. We need to put this together with what has been discussed since (there is one doc, I think in resources).

The idea is that we will develop all of the content within one Word doc, and then I'll put it up on the site when it's ready. It will be much easier to do this than to keep having to edit it within html on the site.

Again, Eleftheria will be able to give you much more direction than this! But basically where we are now is writing the content for each section of the site, and then amalgamating the new site design with the content (re-structuring and with new pages if necessary).

It's great to have you back!

I am travelling till Thursday - cleared doctor appointments today, another tomorrow, car has to see an electrical person before I go home.

eleftheria is caught up with round ball matters at the moment!

I started a little draft attached to my first message of 9 June

I think that Clare and I are in agreement that it is very valuable for us to have your (and other fresh eyes to look at page text.

This is not the moment just for transposing the formal document .. there is an html form of that somewhere in the site now... I don't have that url with me...

Now is the time for fresh 'marketing' language for the pages, say 3-400 words max of bright story, to which Jessica hopes to bring pictures soon.

I managed to do a quick job on a site for
www.aplaceof.info/kiliba last week

That also needs at some point to have marketing pages developed.

www.aplaceof.info/acoke is much behind Kyarumba and Kiliba, needing clarification of business plan yet.

Flory of Kiliba has sent me various documents, including the attached, indicating wide scope of organisational activity.

There will be a page on his organisation soon, building from
www.aplaceof.info/kiliba/fochi.htm

You will see also images and text from Acoke registration. It will be good to have documentation of BWC too.

best wishes

Dennis

Hi Jeff

The most important thing we have to do at the moment is to write content for the site based on the document found here:
http://kyarumba.org/girleducation/documents/guidingdocument2006.htm

Eleftheria is very busy working with the World Cup for the next few weeks, but it would be good to get some structure to the content so that we can start uploading it to the site.

It would be great if you have any ideas as to the most important information we should include on the home page:
http://www.kyarumba.org/id1.html

That would be a good start!

Hi Clare - Thanks for posting the latest document. I will look over it today and provide some feedback. It looks great, by the way -- we've come such a long way from when I first joined this group almost a year ago! I think we're really close now to making the first step happen... Exciting, isn't it?

Does anyone think it would be better to place the Resources link in a more obvious location on the Kyarumba/Nabuur site? Before Clare posted the most recent doc, I had trouble finding it. I was able to locate it under another (past) thread, but it's not the same document (well it is, but it looks like the most recent work-in-progress before the current, updated doc in Clare's previous post). I wonder if the Resources link could be placed at the top of this page, and in big bold letters so that people like me (who are not good at looking for things!) can easily find it? It would be great if our most up-to-date documents were easily accessible and in the corresponding thread/discussion area. This is especially important for new neighbors who may not yet be very familiar with Nabuur.com and may have a hard time finding the documents we reference in our discussions. What does everyone think about this?

Eleftheria - perhaps when you're not as busy with 'round ball matters' you can take a look at this?

That darn World Cup! ;-) Because of it, I wasn't able to get last minute airline tickets to see my relatives in the Netherlands! Now I'm stuck in California for the summer! 8-)

"See" you all soon,
Marianne

Dear neighbors,

Although the emphasis right now appears to be on adding content from the guiding document, we will need to proofread and possibly restructure a few things on the Kyarumba.org website. I notice a few typos and grammatical errors.

Hopefully this is a good time to make some suggestions for changes. Here goes:

1) May I suggest that Jessica's name be included underneath her photo, or in the text, as well as a brief description of her role in the BWC. She is, afterall, the 'spokesperson' for the BWC's PROGIE project, is she not?

2) On the webpage about the BWC, the Introduction is identical to the second paragraph in the succeeding section (titled BWC and GIRL EDUCATION). It is the paragraph that begins "We are not a big organisation..." This is redundant and does not look professional. May I suggest the "Who We Are" section be left out, or else that the info in this section be combined with the Introduction to make one section?

3) Further on (on the same webpage as that referenced above) it states "we work to promote..." and then is followed by three points. I believe "girl child education" must be listed first to emphasize that this is the BWC's main goal. Potential donors and sponsors must be absolutely clear on what the main objective of the BWC is. I assume the Local Savings & Credit is referring to securing funds for girl education? If so, this should be placed as the second point. Although sustainable agriculture is undoubtedly crucial for Kyarumba, it should not be listed first. Perhaps it should not even be included as a goal on this webpage at all, since this website is all about Girl Education? Unless I'm missing something, and Jessica and the BWC feel that sustainable agriculture is linked to successful education opportunities for Kyarumba's girls? In which case, 'sustainable agriculture' should be listed third, in my opinion. Again, it needs to be made clear that promoting education for girls is the top priority.

Will check in again soon with more feedback. Please let me know if there's a specific area you'd like me to focus on, or a particular task I should work on.

Bye for now,
M.

Hi Marianne

Thank you for all the work you've done!

I think what we must do is put all of the content into one Word doc, with lines separating each "web page", and work on building, re-structuring, editing and proofreading there.

The content on the website is "test" content at the moment, hence the repetition and typos. It is old content from the test site, so that the neighbours could see what the final design looked like without empty pages, and much of it has not been updated to reflect the progress made on the latest document.

I know that it may perhaps be easier to load the content onto the site, see how it looks and work on it there, but the time-consuming nature of converting it to html is at present moving us more towards working within Word until we have at least a second or third draft of content for each page.

The suggestions you have made are ideal and just what we desperately need - if we could perhaps implement these within a Word doc, we will have made a big first step towards finalising the content for the site!

Is it possible you would have the time to kick-start this important process by copying the content from http://kyarumba.org/girleducation/documents/guidingdocument2006.htm into a Word doc?

I agree that we then need it to be easily reached within Nabuur/Kyarumba - possibly as a resource link at the top or bottom of this page.

Let me know what you think!

With best wishes,

Clare

Hey mates,
Guess ur fine.
i have seen the site and here below are the ideas i have.

I think News and "get Informed" would Probably mean the same thing althouth they may have different data behind them but i suggest that you change the Link "get Informed" to more different thing from that.

Secondly, I dont if am talking to much about the picture but i think we need more pictures on the site.

Could we have something Like regestration or News letters?

And the final thing is that we need an email address link on first. That is what you have to do first.
Thanks

Mariane
I agree with you coz i personally have not seen any document
Thanks

Hallo everyone and welcome back Marianne!

For some reason I did not get any notifications of new postings in my Inbox, which I have been checking regularly. Logging in today I found all your messages.

I have to be brief, as there is a ball waiting for me (I hope that in between I do not end up in the hospital, I feel extremely tired…).

I am referring to some of the points, which you mentioned:

• What needs to be done

(Meanwhile I have worked on this, so you may just want to directly focus on the document I created...please see posting above)

As stated from Clare and Dennis, we want to give our site life by putting up content. The content on its whole exists in general – it was the document we were working on Marianne. At the moment this document can be accessed under Resources.

But as also stated, if we just copied the content of the document to the site the result would be non coherent and not structured. In the beginning I thought we would this and work on it once on the site but it would be very time consuming to work like this.

This means that we need to work on the content on a word document and then when we have it „web“ ready transfer it to the Kyarumba site.

What this practically means, is that one must compare the structure and headings of th web-site with the document. Then relate parts of the document to specific headings and write „marketing“ introductions or alternate the text as required to catch attention – where required on a word document.

For this Dennis have prepared an example, on how one could prepare such web pages on a word document (document can be found on one of his latest messages).

Is this clear or do you need clarifications on any of these points Marianne or any one else?

• Name of Fund

The name I had agreed with Jessica to use is Kyarumba Girls Education Fund. If it sounds good in English, let us always use please this term

• Resources

I understand what you say about the document not being easily accessible, I agree with you on this but this is given from NABUUR.COM. I will get in touch our community manager and ask him if it is possible to do this differently.
In a following posting, I will try to bring together in one message the documents we need to work on – the concept of the Fund and the example of Dennis on how we could structure samples of web pages.

The best way to work is for everyone to prepare a couple of such web-pages. Clare suggested we start from Home and then move to the other headings so we have a system. Of course suggestions or thoughts or input on any of the headings is welcome.

All the best,
Eleftheria

Hallo once more,

I attach a document in this posting, where I have compared the content of our concept document, the content of the site and the headings available. I have at specific parts added some text my self in order to link everything together.

This document still needs a lot of work but I think it is a start and it is good to have all available texts together in a document, which also relates to the site in structure.

This will also help us to review the text and enrich it with other pieces or introductive pieces.

Starting from the Home page, I think a cohesive welcoming text, referring to things which one can find on the site would be easier to read and at the same time informative (therefore avoiding what now stands in the Home Page, three part Home page with information which can be found on the other pages).

I have then written with green active text and a referal number – scrolling down the document one can find the information which should be connected to this number and the Internet page where texts should be pasted.

I have put together content for the following pages:
- Home
- About Kyarumba
- BWC
- Girl Education
- Kyarumba Girls Education Fund
- Sponsorship options (instead of Getting informed)

Still Open:
- News

I think Geoffrey was right, Getting informed and News is quite the same. What about having „How you can help“ instead of Getting informed? Under this heading we could then have all the infos on sponsoriship options and photos of girls, stories etc.

The Kyarumba Girls education Fund needs to be worked further on: there is too much text under this heading - I think we need a sub-menu here - e.g. eligibility criteria, selection criteria. I did not have time to write this now in the document, maybe I will tomorrow.

One last question: Where is Jessica´s Thuneyo – Welcome message?

Looking forward to your comments,
Eleftheria

Hi Eleftheria

Great work!

It's late here so I'm not going to write a long post now... but I agree that the Thuneyo - Welcome message should absolutely be on the home page.

At the moment, it's here: http://www.clarekerr.com/kyarumba/

So we can add it to our 'Webpages for Kyarumba doc' under Home... the first step in what may be a fairly long but ultimately rewarding process!

I'll be back online tomorrow. We definitely have more of a team working together on this now, it's great!

With best wishes,

Clare

Ps. I agree with Geofrey on "getting informed" and "news", and also that we definitely need more photographs.

Ideally we'd be able to replace the photos I've found on the web with ones of girls from Kyarumba. At the moment, they're girls from other parts of Uganda.

I have read through the text you have put together, Eleftheria, thanks for the push.

This provides a good base for beginning building some pages. Some texts remain very long and perhaps can be left until the neater smaller pages are built... as they develop, the gaps will be evident.

I think that the greatest essential is for the text to have personal tone and to be in first person as far as possible ... "i" or "we" rather than the passive voice as in

Quote:
"Kyarumba.org is the initiative of a group of women in Kyarumba, the Bwimaniro Women's Club, who would like to make a difference to the lives of the girls here."
At all times the page must shout 'this is our web site!'

There is still a tangle in the text - as in the basic document, as I mentioned earlier - between financial matters and sponsorship and communication.

At some point we also have to simplify that list of spending options. There are so many that the choice is bewildering. And will in the end be impractical if say, 90% of donations are specified for 'instructional materials'. We have to move back from saying 'your money will go specifically to this' to sayiing 'a donation of $50/100/200 would enable us to do such as this.' The trustees must be given explicit discretion - it is not appropriate for them to be tied to unbalanced contributions, and it will also be absolutely wrong to receive funds specified for x and apply them to y.

To achieve the personalisation of the web site and the simplification of issues, we badly need the photos and personal information about the trustees, etc. It would be ideal for the trustees to be identified by photos and have below that a warm, positive "we will..." statement.

best wishes

Dennis

Yes, yes, yes... I agree on all points raised by Dennis! We desperately need more photos (both of the trustees and the girls), the web site should have a personal feel to it, and the sponsorship options simplified.

Also, simplification of issues and content is a must... we can always have "in depth" pages linked from the main ones.

This really is progress being made!

It is now even later here, and so I shall save other thoughts until tomorrow. But suffice to say, a great start has been made!

With best wishes,

Clare
