This year UNV is hosting the Online Volunteering Team of the Year award, which celebrates the dedication of online teams working towards making a social impact on the global community. The purpose of Team awards is to recognize online volunteers' contributions to human development, to demonstrate how -- through effective online collaboration with volunteers -- development organizations can strengthen their activities and to showcase the diversity in which online volunteers can support development organizations.
[u]Nairobi Eastlands and Madurai [/u]
The teams of Nairobi Eastland and Madurai were nominated for the Award. The expectations were high, because last year, when not teams but individual volunteers were honoured, Raul Caceres was one of the winners. Today the UNV announced the winners and unfortunately the NABUUR teams were not on the Team Award list. It is clear that you can’t win every year. I would like to applaud you, because the Village of Madurai exemplifies to the core what the award is about. With James and Wenjin at the helm, and joined by a motivated team of Neighbours, the team has shown drive and commitment to achieve concrete results for the local community.

By the way, another piece of news to tell all neighbours. Recently our active neighbour Sayantan contacted Wharton Volunteer Corp and we recently sent out a reply to their questairre. I hope we can finally attract some Wharton students to Madurai to help the local community.

Just wanted to provide a quick update to let you know that I received a message from James this morning. He said that 3 volunteers from the Wharton Institute USA visited in May and stayed for 15 days. They prepared some documents which James indicated that he would forward in another message.
James said that Internet access has been problematic, but the community is now focused on efforts to establish a community radio station.
