Christopher would like very much to have a website constructed to feature Notre Dame High School. The purpose of this website will be to showcase the work that has been done at the school,as well as the projects that are ongoing-such as the dormitories. It will also help provide valuable information to prospective funders and help solicit individual donations.

Christopher feels that this will serve as a useful tool to which he can direct people when writing funding proposals to demonstrate the good work the school is doing.

For this task we need to:

1. Discuss cost/maintenance issues-who will house and maintain the website? Are there free options out there that would work?

2. Decide what content areas the website should have.

3. Write content for the website.

4. Discuss the best options money transfer and accepting donations online.

Hi everyone

The details of the chat between Christopher and Jennifer are at http://www.nabuur.com/en/village/masaka/project/task/project-room-genera...
This gives a good overview of the current situation at the school, as do some of the other later posts under that task.

The budget for the dormitories can be found under Resources at http://www.nabuur.com/en/village/masaka/resources
A direct link to the document is http://www.nabuur.com/files/attach/2008/11/task/Project%20Proposal%20NOT...

For pictures, have a look at the Gallery page.

Although students at the school are not able to access the internet at the moment, it would be great if you can create a website that is easy for Christopher to update. Hopefully one day the students at the school will also have access and be able to add content of their own.

Hello Mary,
Thank you for the contribution.
Thank also for relocation of the information.Hope that can work as a start.
Mary, have you had time to short out the likely donors from the list ?
Otherwise work for both building the dormitory and water tank is going on well.
Mary,we got a problem here with our email address,we cannot access messages nor write messages through it.
We lost your private email.May you please, help and post it to me.
We have been advised to now open a new one and its: ndhschool89@yahoo.co.uk.
Please,be using that one.
Yours

Hi Christopher

I am looking through the list but have not got right to the end yet. From what I have seen so far, there will not be many who would be likely to fund the dormitory construction. But there are some who might be able to provide money for other activities, although there is always a lot of competition for funding so there are no guarantees.

I apologise for taking so long to do this, and will try and post a list by the end of the weekend. I will put it under the "Research and Identify Organizations that Support Educational Programs" task. Did you see my post under there about becoming part of various children/school-related networks as a useful way to share experiences with others who are doing similar work to you?

At the moment you are doing a great job of raising money locally. Given your success, you may find that is far easier and quicker than looking internationally.

Has your school finished for the holidays yet? I know schools in some parts of Uganda have, but I don't know whether you all follow the same term dates.

I have sent you my email address.

Dear Mary,
Thank you very much for the message.
Your contribution is great. We shall wait for the list.
As you know,we trying all ways to see that something works out.
If you can read the bills of quantities, and our plan for the dormitories, there are elements A,B,C,and D.Now according to our builders, and on basing on what materials we do have/got,Element A,nd B are completed.
Now we only need to takle Element C and D.
Again,as we studied in economics that when you solve one problem, the another big one comes up.
I had explained that the first butch of our pupils this year sat for senior four exams, they will need to continue for other two years for senior five and six. This means we need build some more classes for these children..
Yet we have not finished the girls dormitory and there is another one that we need for the boys.
Our Children started there holidays 05,December 2008,yesterday.
The holiday will end on 01,FEB 2009.
This afternoon we are planing for a chat with Jeniffer.Hope all goes well.
Please, lam requesting you to send the list on my
email:ndhschool89@yahoo.co.uk,as you know l dont have enough experience to getting out info, and it really disturbs me.
Have not yet used the students search yet .We shall do so

Hi Christopher

I didn't know you were planning on building more classrooms as well as the dormitories. Maybe you need to do all this slowly, over time.

I know of schools that have run into problems because they have put all their focus on building, on expanding to take more children, then have run into big problems because they cannot pay teachers, buy school supplies etc.

So I would suggest that you focus on some of the areas around sustainability too - finding ways for the school to generate income e.g. via the vocational training you are setting up next year. You will then have money to cover your ongoing running costs, and can look to expand.

Get together as a group, work out what your needs are, put some organised plans in place, set priorites.

Finding funding is hard (although you are very good at doing it in your area!), and if you are going to put in applications to international organisations, you need to be sure that you are focusing on the right things, which won't always be more construction.

Once I have done it, I will post the list on here and send to your email as well.

Using computers really does get easier over time, it just takes practice!

I spoke with Christopher this morning and we were wondering if you would be able to create a document that he can use to teach the management staff at the school about different options and requirements of having a website. For example, the difference between a website and a blog, the types of things that cost money with a website, etc.

For now, Christopher would like for now to focus on free options. Possibly something like weebly.com would work to devise a basic site using some of the information presented here at Nabuur.

No one at the school is familiar computers and the basic requirements of website versus blog, so your work in this area will help them learn too. We want to be certain that they can easily load the website from a dial-up connection. I believe they will be able to do that with a site on weebly. We also want to be certain that it can be easily updated so that we can teach them how to access it and do this themselves.

Let me know if you have questions-

Dear mr. Robinson

We are a Dutch student group, and we are working on creating a website for the Notre-Dame Highschool in Masake. Would you please help us, send us some information about how we could start. Maybe you could afterwards help us with the server?

Hi students!

It may also be a good idea to talk to the person who teaches IT/computers at your school, as they may also be able to give you some good advice about the best ways to create a website that will be easy for Christopher to maintain.

Difference between a blog and a website

What is a blog???

A blog is a website on the Internet where you can give your personal opinion on different kind of subjects, for example the election of the new president Obama from the U.S. A blog isn’t a personal website but a site on the Internet where you can place your opinion. This is a really difficult thing for us to do. First we must create a page on the Internet where you can place your opinions for different kind of subjects. It’s very important to know that you just can’t type a text in Word and then place it on the blog, it’s way more difficult to do something like that. Much more easy is to create a website for Notre Dame High school

We prefer building a website for Notre Dame High school. That’s the best solution for us and for you. On the site we’re intend to place things like information and pictures etc. On the site everybody can look at your school, also the children on your school. And… if you want to use the site for fundraising it’s the best solution. On a blog you can’t do things like that.

So we want to create a site for your Notre Dame High school!!! We are already busy with building an website for you. We’re building the site on Weebly, that’s a free site on the Internet where you can build your own personal website.

Hi Michael

The only pictures I have seen are those on the Gallery and Overview pages. Christopher do you have any more?

Please can you explain a little more about the kinds of information you are intending to include on the site, and exactly what you need?

Hi Christopher

Before putting information about sponsorship on the site, we will need to work out the practical details of how a sponsorship scheme would work. For example, exactly how money would be used, how sponsors would be kept informed of progress, the amount of money required per child etc. If you already have ideas, it would be good to have that discussion under the Sponsorship task.

For this and for fundraising, we will also have to work out the best way for money to get to you e.g. Western Union, Money Gram, directly into school bank account etc.

Look forward to seeing the pictures!

Students, it will be great to hear your ideas about what you are going to put on the site, then it will be possible to work together with Christopher to make sure the site meets the school's needs.
