Discuss child sponsorship or other options to support orphans at the school

Status: Finished
Step:
2

Christopher is considering adding a page on a school website pertaining to orphaned children who are unable to pay their school fees. Notre Dame High School has many orphans. They have read about the program that was started in the Matopeni village and are considering trying to replicate it at their school.

Current school fees for each term are: Boarding Ug shs 200.000/= day Ug shs 98000, for food only, and there are three terms in a school year. They hope that one day they will be able to increase these fees due to inflation and high food prices because it is currently difficult to cover expenses.

For this task, we would like to start a discussion on the pros/cons of running a child sponsorship program as well as explore other possible options for supporting the orphaned children at the school. Please share your ideas and thoughts here.

Another option we began talking about were other ways to support orphans from the school location. For example, if food is an issue-is it possible to have a school garden to help cut down on food costs, by growing your own? The other issue was vocational skill training-could specific vocational trade skills be introduced to these students so that they are then able to afford to pay their own school fees. In terms of running a sponsorship program, this is part of the focus in several villages here at Nabuur, so we would really like input from the people who run these programs as to what would need to be considered and what is involved in establishing and maintaining a good program. The key I think here is that we would like to foster independence in these students as much as possible, while still allowing them to enjoy their childhood. I hope that helps to start the discussion off. I wanted to add some further detail to this task:

In order to help the school manage the large number of orphans that attend and are unable to pay school fees, one of the options that Christopher mentioned was developing a sponsorship program.

We talked about 2 options:

1. The school running their own program.
2. The school working with an existing program to gain support for the orphaned students.

Working with an existing program is obviously less ongoing work for the school, but it may be difficult to establish contact with one of these organizations unless it is run on a smaller scale.
