Find books for the school library-READING and TEXTBOOKS

Notre Dame High School has a library and a librarian. The library contains some chairs and a few books that have been received through generous donations. At the present time, students have to share textbooks because there are not enough books for each student. The library could also use general reading and reference materials.
For this task we are looking for volunteers to help us identify organizations that donate/supply books or possibly local publishing houses that might be contacted to help provide enough books to adequately stock the library as well as improve the ratio of textbooks to students at the school.
If you post useful links, please also add them to the associated Shared Document (wiki).

As Christopher could not attach the CBO registration form he emailed it to me. It is attached here as a PDF as the site still won't let me attach a .JPG file as a file, only as an image.

Hi Christopher
Have you tried Biblionef? I know several Nabuur-related projects that have received books from them and the application process is very straightforward.
Biblionef
http://www.biblionef.org/
Send reading books (not school textbooks) to schools, orphanages etc in developing countries all over the world. They do not charge for shipping and have already assisted several other projects on Nabuur. Note that although the application page suggests they will only assist places that don’t have any books at all, that is not the case. As far as I know they only supply books in English.
How to apply:
http://www.biblionef.org/index.php?id=78
“ARE YOU AWARE OF A PROJECT?
Are you aware of a school, a children's home or other social service institution in a developing country, where children would love to read, but do not have any children's books at all? Send your request for children's books to Biblionef.
State clearly:
• what kind of institution you have in mind: a school, an orphanage or an other project for child care, a short description;
• the age classification of the children who are going to read the books;
• how many children are going to use the books;
• proportion boy's and girls;
• the official language area of the regions and the country;
• name, address and a contact person of the institution where the books are to be send to;
• a telephone number of the contact person on the spot there and if available a fax number and e-mail address; this is necessary for the transport.”
Send email to biblionef@kb.nl

Hi all- we have manged to secure books for BIG recently for Garden's library in Zambia. They have about 100,000 books in their warehouse and Steve responds promptly to enquiries.
I didn't put the original application together- Mary Monterey did, however Mary is currently not well, so I can't give you a copy or any tips about that application process. Good luck! Carolyn

Christopher-
Can you please provide a list of textbooks and reference books needed at the school? Are there any books in particular that you would like for the library?
Regards-
Jennifer
Christopher-
One of the Local Rep's that I work with in Nepal was able to secure 3000 books for their school library simply by contacting local publishing houses in Nepal. This prompted me to look for resources within Uganda that you might contact. So far, I came up with these:

I am not sure that this one would be able to donate books, but it really looks like a great organization that encourages women to write. According to their website some of their activities include holding workshops about writing-so possibily they might be interested in coming out to the school to talk to the girls. Very worth checking into I think.
I would very much support the idea of trying to get books and other items within Uganda. It will save on shipping costs and, especially for textbooks, will ensure that they are relevant to what is being taught at the school.
As well as those listed by Jennifer, Christopher has also said they received books from Books Abroad. http://www.booksabroad.org.uk/ in a previous post
Mary
Regarding shipping, BIG are able to cover half the costs so we raised some funds to meet them half way. i would assume their generosity extends to all groups they provide books to but you would have to check.
Dear Calo,Mary Jenffer and friends,
We have written to Biblionef a letter was posted last week.
We also to write to whatever contact that is provided to us in order to secure the books.
However,Jeniffer requested us to provide the listings og needed books.
We do teach subjects.
English Languege,Literature in English,Geograph,History,Commerce,Biology,Chemistry,Phisics,Agriculture,Christian Religiuos Education,
Fine art,Mathematics,Computer studies,economics,And vocational subjects.
Thus we require reffernce books,text books and those for use to reading in the libraly.
HI Christopher
Thanks for the information. Getting general reading and reference books from donors may be relatively easy. It may be harder to get specific textbooks - these may need to come from within Uganda, especially if all schools follow a standard curriculum, using the same books.
Will you be able to contact the Ugandan organisations that Jennifer posted details of? As they are in your country, it may be easier for you to do that yourself.
It may be worth getting in contact with publishers and local bookshops as well, to see if they are willing to assist. As well as being of benefit to you, it is also good publicity for them if they are giving books to a school in need, especially if there is a way to get their gift featured in the local media.
Mary
Dear Mary,
Thank you for your advice.l will contiune using all means
Christopher
Where i am, i know a lot of schools around here are actually THROWING AWAY books that are not necessarily outdated, but just old. There are normally around 300 of the same books. Perhaps we could get the schools to, instead of throwing them away, donate them.
Hi Nathan
Welcome to Masaka!
If you know of schools who have books they would like to donate that would be great!
Before sending any books, Christopher would need to confirm that they would be useful to Notre Dame school e.g. they cover the right subjects and are of a suitable level.
The biggest challenge will be getting the books to Uganda, so maybe if a school is interested in donating books they would also consider having a fundraiser to raise money to pay for the costs of shipping as well?
The school is also interested in forming links with schools around the world, so if you know any schools who would like to do this, please let us know.
Mary
Dear Nathan,
You are most welcome to our masaka village.
The information you provide is very nice for us.
The fact is that we realy need the books here at our school.
Not only the books,but we hope such schools may even be having used lab equipments that they no longer use.
We as teachers,they are nothing very defficult like teacing without books,for reading and for refferences by both pupils and the teachers.
As mentioned by Mary,and when you decide to contact for us those schools for books and lab equipments donation,will be a wonderful job.
For our children who sat the National Examinations this year,we had to transport children for over 100 miles away from the school for exams.We were not awarded an exam centre because we lack lab equipments and books.
lts therefore upon that background that we call upon you Mr.Nathan, and friends over there to come to our rescue and enable us get access to such books or Lab equipments.
We realy know how defficult it can be to transport such materials but when hands are joined together we can together do the work.
Very much eager to hearing from Nathan about this books &Lab equipment issue.
The subjects offered at our school are :Mathematics,economics,history,geograph,biology,physics,chemistry,religiuos education,commerce.english leterature.english languege,Fine art,capentry.machenics,tailoring,plumbing,building,agriculture,french,etc....
The books would be for reading in the library,teachers and children refferences.
EVERY BODY IS VERY HAPPY ABOUT THE INFO PROVIDED.
WE HOPE GOD'S WILLING WE SHALL HAVE THESE ITEMS
