Mosquito nets for the new dormitories

Status: Finished
Step:
1

At the present time, there are 7 students at Notre Dame High School sick from Malaria. Last week, there were 10 students sick with Malaria. It is the rainy season in Masaka and they fully expect that Malaria cases will rise.

In order to combat Malaria, they would like to utilize mosquito nets in the new dormitories, but not all students or teachers can afford to purchase them. In Uganda, a treated mosquito net can cost Ug shs 15000, and an untreated one costs around Ug shs 10000.

For this task we are looking for volunteers to help us find a way to get the necessary nets so that our dormitories can provide the children who sleep there with a "safety net" for preventing Malaria.

How many nets are required?

From what I read, there is a big focus on malaria in Uganda as it’s a huge problem right across the country. And there are quite a lot of free/low-cost net distributions going on.

So I would suggest starting within Uganda, finding out if other schools have been able to get nets either as part of one of these organised distributions or as donations from local companies.

Hi Christopher

I should think that the first set of nets that will hopefully be shipped to Uganda have already been allocated to other villages who had already mentioned they had a need for them. However, if anyone ever finds a method of shipping, its possible there could be others in the future.

Have you done any research within Uganda, is this something your church contacts could help with do you think?

Hi Christopher

Its great to hear of more progress!

What other things do you need to complete the dormitories - just bedding and nets, or is there more than that? The budget I have seen was only for construction not for all the equipment/supplies you need as well. Are you hoping to construct another water tank?

I have the feeling you will end up solving it in your area, as you are incredibly good at that!

Are you going to the meeting that Pelle is organising in Kampala, and is he visiting the school? You may find that you can get a lot of good ideas by talking with the other Local Reps there.

With the dormitories, you always seem to be able to raise the money or find materials locally, so I am unsure whether we will need to help you with that or not? Finding things from outside can take time, maybe several months. Given your links with the church, I have a feeling that will be a good way to get funding, as they support many schools and other projects around teh world. If what you really need is ongoing support, links with churches around the world is one way to go, and you may be able to do this via your church contacts in Uganda. Have you tried this? Its good that you will be going to the meeting in Kampala, and that Pelle will be visiting the school. There are several Ugandan villages on Nabuur that need mosquito nets. While you are in Kampala it would be good if you can talk with the other Local Reps and see if anyone has any ideas on whether this can be solved within Uganda. You ask why Jennifer or I have not become faciliator of Masaka. I cannot speak for Jennifer. My main reason is that your project is completely focused on finding money and equipment from outside, and this is something I am not very good at doing, I think you are far better at it than I am! I do understand that some things will need to come from outside, at least at the beginning, but I prefer to be involved in projects that are looking at long term self-sufficiency as well as immediate fundraising needs.
