Dear Mary, thank you very much for your comments.
The UK friend and of The Kisoboka Trust, informed us that after his visit Feburuary 2007,he together with others formed the trust to specifically rise money for water and toilets for our school. He further informed us that through the trust, they will build a water tank and that after that another pit Latrine will be built.
Again that the trust will be contacting other trusts /organisations /people to have them help with water and sanitation projects.
This will be done slowly by slowly and as funds get available. But he assured us that funds for the water tank was ready and available.
We have contacted a lady at Makerere University who suppervised the toilet project to draw out a plan and to make out costings for the Kisoboka to send the funding.
This Lady at Makerere is representing another UK Trust which deals with low cost technology for develpment.
We had requested her if some other people could contact her and she accepted

Lisa is the counrty Representative.
This is why we have stopped requesting for information from other people to this water and sanitation program,as we have been assured of help by The Kisoboka Trust.

The costings associated with the Plan for the dormetory are now ready. But we have been a little bit buzy and yet the machine which does scanning at the cafe was faulty.
But soonest possible lam sending it.
Again,we had wanted to first descuss the the costings ,which now has been done.

Transport
Yes,Transport is a new idea, but it has been in place.
When the UK friend visted our school,he did request to visit some homes for some of the children that study at Our School, but living into homes with parents or gurdians or those of child perented homes.
Atleast 6 homes were visted, but of those that were visted, some were very far from the school as far as 6 to 7 miles.

Books/equipment
YES Ofcourse we shall need help with books and equipments for the school.
We had contacted some, but not all.
I email you a copy of names of those we have contacted.
We do really need books and Lab equipments
Remember we recieved some vocational tools.

The main task that we really need is to find ways and solutions to have the dormetories built.
We shall have to provide more information of the need for dormetories at our school.
This can be done in a form of a project proposal ?
May you advise me of how it can be done on the nabuur website.

We shall need the projects for income generations for the school and for the guardians/parents.
Our worry,is that we didnt want in the first instence to be engeged with many projects.

Hi Christopher

You really are making good progress! I have a feeling that you may end up solving your funding needs outside of Nabuur through all the other contacts you have. Time will tell on that.

I agree that you should only do a few things at a time. As you may have noticed by now, I very much believe that it is a good thing for the school to look at ways of making money for itself, so am very pleased to see that you have started with the pigs.

The Good Earth Trust website is interesting - for anyone who has not read it, they promote a low cost building technology:

Interlocking Stabilised Soil Block technology (ISSB) has the potential to replace the widespread, costly and environmentally damaging practice of using fired bricks to meet the growing infrastructure needs in this region. ISSB provides an alternative form of construction that can create durable, affordable and environmentally sound solutions to the housing, water and sanitation needs of millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa."

Will you be using this for the dormitory construction as well as for the water tanks?

The site also talks about it becoming a business oportunity for the people that are trained in making ISSB bricks. I wonder if that is something your school could get involved in, as I know you teach vocational skills.

I can see that other Nabuur projects could be interested in it too.

Having the children walk that far to school is certainly not a good thing. Not sure how easy it would be to find a bus... others may have ideas on this. Do you have ideas of local costs? I guess its too far for the kids to cycle - I have seen examples of school children being provided with bikes, although I can't remember any of the organisations involved at the moment.

Hi Christopher,

I think you are doing great too and I am sure you will be able to continue doing great things for your community.

There are a couple of organisations that work sending Bikes to communities in Africa. Not sure if you know them already. There is Bikes for AFrica and there is also Ibike.

Hope this helps

All the best,

Christopher, thanks for adding the Bill Of Quantity documents and providing all the other information. Unfortunately the website made the pictures quite small so a little hard to read. This is not because you did anything wrong - the website automatically makes pictures smaller so they fit on the page. Was going to try adding as Attached Files instead as this would make them bigger (you open them as separate documents) but the website won't allow this - I have reported this to the Web Development group. I am also adding the building plans you sent me a while ago so that others can get a better idea of what the dormitories will look like. Again, these will look a little small. I see that the total cost for each dormitory is 42,955,693.81 Ugandan Shillings (about US$25,870 according to a currency conversion website). And that each one will sleep 36 people. Will the school be able to meet the additional costs of equipment - beds etc, also of ongoing maintenance? The next challenge is to find an organisation that will provide funding - that will not be easy, and we may not be successful, but we can try. Do you have a written proposal document that gives more information? If not, don't worry at the moment as most organisations will have their own format for applications. I don't know whether it will be possible to find bikes. Raul, now you mention the name, it was Bikes4Africa that I was thinking of - http://www.jole1000.org/./bikes4africa.html assuming of course that this is the one you meant! And is http://www.ibike.org/ Ibike? Also Ugandan organisation Bicycle Sponsorship Project & Workshop http://www.bspw.org/ might have ideas. There will be others too I am sure. Challenge would be finding out if any are interested and whether they pay shipping costs as that is always an issue. Whether the school wants bikes and/or a bus depends on what is more practical and cost-effective. They will each have their own advantages and disadvantages, and you will be able to list these more easily than me as you know the local situation. I can think of a few - a bus will cost you more to run (fuel, maintenance etc), will leave a large number of students without transport if it breaks down, but has the advantage that it can be used for other things as well as collecting children for school, and may be more appealing to the children than having to cycle in bad weather. It will also depend on the cost of a vehicle, or the cost and number of bikes required. Hope you and Romina are making progress with getting new tasks added? Mary [teaser] => Hi guys! Hi guys!

Hi Christopher,

Nice to see the task discussion progressing here.

A few days ago I sent you an email suggesting revising the tasks, specifically as they relate to funding, but I have yet to hear from you.

As you likely know, project tasks that are based solely on funding have little chances of success on NABUUR. These tasks often scare neighbours away. The majority of neighbours are on NABUUR to share their ideas, resources, and knowledge with the projects (after all, this is what NABUUR is truly about) and do not like to be asked to raise money.

Raising of funds via an online volunteer platform can prove very difficult to carry out, not to mention take a long time due to the overwhelming number of funding applications already submitted to donors.

Having said all this, the project belongs to you and the local community's. Nobody is meaning to deter project plans, and the reality on the ground is fully understood. But I am personally concerned that if you focus on funding, this project will stall. This concern comes from past and present experiences with NABUUR projects that have started with funding tasks. Good to hear that you are officially registered. So if you get both dormitories built you will have over 140 children sleeping at the school. You say you are going slowly, but you are also making progress. I have to agree with what Romina says about searching for funding through Nabuur - its not easy. More Nabuur projects fail at it than succeed. It can be done, although is far easier for smaller amounts of money than for large. There is a lot of luck involved and it can get VERY frustrating for everyone involved! From experience with others, its often far more successful via personal connections (like you have with Kisoboka) than via Nabuur. So I would agree that it should not be your only task. But that is up to you of course. If you decide to do the funding search for yourself outside of Nabuur you could use that list I posted a while ago as a starting point. Back on what you had requested to knowing of:We shall use low cost compressed bricks on the building of the water tank, but for the dormetories ,we shall use the clay burnt bricks. As you all can remember,l informed you that we recieved $ 1000 from a fundrising drive from the catholic chidren in Chicago USA,this ammount has been used to buy some bricks and some sand.We have started digging of the foundation -for the girls in the first instance.
This excecise is not very easy at all but we have all the hopes that we shall accomplish.
All the information that you are providing to us through this nabuur website shall be used as well as others or using other methods possible.
Thank you once again for all the information you are giving us.
As you can recall,we had a workshop in Uganda conducted by Raul and Barb, which boosted us so much.If you happen to be conducting another one like the one we have read of to take place in Netherlands, please do also help and invite us.We have all the hopes that we can shear more and much when we meet with other representatives.

Tasks are those things that you would like volunteers to do for your project. For example searching for information, suggesting ideas etc. The best way to understand this is to look at some other Nabuur villages. For example http://www.nabuur.com/en/village/kayole-soweto/project http://www.nabuur.com/en/village/kabondo/project as these are two fairly active and have several different tasks going on at the same time. Your needs will probably be completely different from theirs, but it will give you a better idea of what I am trying to describe. Start with a list of what you want to do at the school. From that you will be able to make a list of how neighbours can help. This is what I was suggesting in my post the other day. And, if you have not done so already, reply to Romina's email as she should be able to help you with this. The list I mentioned is at http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dgs9fnp6_0g5zp8p3n I cannot guarantee that everything is completely up to date, as website links and application rules change all the time. Its a fairly random list as I add things when I come across them. The majority of these will not be potential sources of funding for the dormitories either because they don't fund education-related projects, or because they don't allow applications for the amount of money you need. Some of them might, but will all get LOTS of applications. The key thing is to work out which ones are realistic possibilities, and stick to their application methods - dates, formats etc. Mary [teaser] => Hi Christopher You say you are confused about tasks. Hi Christopher

You say you are confused about tasks. Tasks are those things that you would like volunteers to do for your project. For example searching for information, suggesting ideas etc.

The best way to understand this is to look at some other Nabuur villages. For example
http://www.nabuur.com/en/village/kayole-soweto/project
http://www.nabuur.com/en/village/kabondo/project
as these are two fairly active and have several different tasks going on at the same time.

The list I mentioned is at http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dgs9fnp6_0g5zp8p3n

I cannot guarantee that everything is completely up to date, as website links and application rules change all the time.

Hi Christopher,

I would really like to think there is a way for me to help but I just do not see it right now that the task is focused on funds raising. it is just not my field of expertise.

I really hope it goes well and if you have any project management or income generation related question do not hesitate to let me know.
