IDEAS needed how to promote the School sponsorship program

The school in the Mathare slum in Nairobi needs a sponsorship program to help pay school fees and other learning needs which need money and yet they are unanable to get them since they are vulnerable children. The needs range from school fees, school uniform, school shoes,Bags, socks and exercise and text books.
The school has now its own website www.patmosjuniorschool.org where eventual sponsors can apply to sponsor a child. This task needs volunteers to:
1. Read through the website and see if any relevant information for eventual sponsors is missing. Clarify the modalities of the sponsorship programme.
2. Brainstorm channels/ websites etc. where the sponsorship programme could be promoted.
Thanks for your help,
Richard

Hi
Haven't had time to look thorough the site in much detail, but a couple of quick suggestions.
1. Give information on the cost of sponsorship
2. Some people may not want to commit to long-term sponsorship, or may prefer to assist in other ways. So provide information on other ways people can help e.g. one-off donations (what these would pay for), items needed (books etc, especially if seeking support from people within Kenya who can easily deliver the stuff to you), school partnerships (if you are looking for a partner) etc
Mary
Hi mary,
thanks hearing from you and your concern for sponsorship task. The cost sponsor has to go along with school fees as the major task of a sponsor followed by school uniform, shoes, and writing materials.
Fees alone is kshs 4500 a term, school uniform is going at Kshs 1000 for small sizes,1200 for medium sizes.Shoes and socks together are going at kshs 600.We can spent 300 for stationery for every child on writing Materials.
Apart from school fees and writing material that has to be paid for termly, the rest of the requirements are bought once a year although shoes tend to wear out quickly and may need to be two pairs or to be bought twice in a year from that you can be able to sum the cost of sponsorship on termly basis.I really don't know the alternative way of sponsorship but some body has thought of goat rearing because this is what other sponsors are doing it other countries. We need to discuss about it in detailed way if it can be the option.
With other stuffs like books and if support is coming from Kenya ,we can collect them ourselves or give the donating group direction to our school once they can know our cell phone number 0375771481 then we can easily get in touch and make it successful. This can apply on partnerships.
This is all i can tell you for now but make more discussion on this subject.Feel free to ask me more questions,
Best wishes ,
Richard
Hi Richard-
The volunteer team in the Khandbari village worked on the issue of child sponsorship pretty extensively while I served as their facilitator. Basically, the group there formed a foundation - called the Sankhuwasabha Educational Scholarship Foundation. Several members serve on the board and they oversee the scholarship program. This includes identification of the students with the greatest need. They take applications and review these together.
In terms of developing the sponsorship program, the volunteer team created a brochure that explained sponsorship. They also developed a newsletter that could be sent to all active sponsors - this is something that could easily be conveyed in an online format so as not to incur postage costs. It was critical to define exactly how much of the sponsor fee when directly to the children and how much was designated as "administrative costs" for running the program. Sponsors tend to be less likely to donate when costs are not well defined and administrative costs are too high. If a person chooses to sponsor one or more students, they want to see the majority of that money getting to the student to cover their basic needs. Time frames also need to be defined clearly so that all sponsors can understand how long their donation lasts. Blogging, a website and use of other social media tools could also be incorporated to teach others about the program and help you attract potential sponsors.
Letter writing was encouraged between sponsor and child. Sponsors were able to send gifts to the child, however it was also noted that in some cases this can cause extreme jealousy or fighting among the other students so if you allow gifts to be given, it may be best that the sponsor donates directly to your organization and the organization oversees making certain the students gets something they need.
Also-one of the struggles of any sponsorship program is that sponsors may just suddenly stop donating. You may be expecting a donation and then never hear from a sponsor again-so it is important to build into your program a plan for dealing with that issue. It can be very discouraging to a student to lose their sponsor.
I hope this is helpful information as you consider this. I do encourage you to also look at other options (such as goat rearing as you mentioned, if there is proper space available for that) to help the family of the student or older students become self-sufficient.
All the best-
Jennifer
Hi everyone,
Greetings!

Hi Jenniffer and Jeremy,
You are all developing a positive way of getting to sponsorship program and actually that is what is desired of now.Much of what Jenniffer has described can be found on the patmos junior school website with a clear description of how sponsors can go a bout sponsoring their children. It highlights how a prospective sponsors can go through the sponsorship process. This guide is found on sponsor a child page .However I can make a sample of a brochure with a detailed information and more photos although it can take me some time because of the necessary costs involved.
The cost of sponsorship has already been outline in the previous discussion. You can still ask more questions where we still need good approach ways
Thanks all,
Richard
Hi Richard
Thanks for the information. It would be good to add that to your website for potential sponsors to read.
Jennifer that is great advice! Do you have a link to their website and the brochure|
(apologies for rather brief message - I am away from home at the moment)
Mary
Hi again Jennifer and Mary,
First, to Mary,I'm happy to read that you have now joined Mathare village as a neighbor and I'm indeed impressed with your quick contributions in the on going sponsorship discussion.
On the question of the brochure information to be added on the website,I have to contact Marina to find out if she can add the sponsorship costs on the website.Let me send her an email on this subject and if she gives me a go a head ,I will pass the necessary contents to her immediately.I will let you know about it.However,if there are prospective sponsors, they can keep browsing the website and get some more information.
Best wishes,
Richard
Hi Sir
I have had the opportunity to meet you personally and listening to you, one gets to see this great ambition in you to see to it that kids get equal opportunity,
You have a heart for children,
Just as I had told you when we last met, please try to consider enroll some kids-whose parents are able to pay so that you charge them something small to help yo run the project, this will bring in the element of financial sustainability.
Call a meeting of all parents and pause the challenge, you will be surprised at how rich they are in ideas,
Involve them and allow them to come up with suggestions,
This is what I'm doing with my Kilele Junior. This is because funding is really an uphill task.
Keep your head high brother it doesn't come easy but face it with confidence, You will because yours is a noble one.
Good Luck

Hi John and every one,
Great to hear from you and to see you have a heart for us to have step in this exercise. However M athare unlike other estates in the city of Nairobi is typically a slum carrying the needy people both adults and children. It is to this cause that we were moved to start this project in order to help the impoverished children who were having no access to this important element(education).
Our fundamental issue is to assist these children since they cannot afford paying for it in other learning institutions. In fact some of their parents or guardians still come to us to seek for a financial help whenever they have nothing to feed the children right in their homes. We have tried to charge them some little fee but whenever we insist on that, the next decision from the parents and guardians is to tell them to remain at home and the following day perhaps they reach on the street to beg so as to find food. That is why for us to retain them at school and make it a good place for them we have to go ahead and provide some little meals. So with Mathare we ought to come up with the heart of helping, that will work well with the children but charging fees is scaring them a way. I hope you understand this right from the photos I have posted .
It is not easy as you put but it takes a real heart of grace and self denial
Thanks for your encouraging ideas,
Richard.
Hi Richard
Having visited you today in mathare and getting the opportunity to interact with those children in your school, I realized that my idea to you about sharing the fees cost with parents cannot work.
Those kids really need help.
I had a rope project in my school where I bought from a ladies group at a cheaper price and was able to sell some so as to help pay fees for those who cannot pay.
I have some few ropes remaining, Can I donate them to your school so that you can try to raise some money?
Meanwhile lets trust that God will touch someone out there so that he/she can extend a philanthropic hand.
I also advice that beside your website, it would be more realistic to post som of the pictures on nabuur, PICTURES TELL IT AS IT IS
Good luck
John

Hi John,
You can now bear witness of the conditions and the situation in which we operate.Whoever comes to M athare for the first time will wonder if human beings can afford living this type of life but that is how it is.I am thankful to the rope donation and as soon as i receive them from you then we shall sell them off to raise the money which will go into the feeding program for the month of July.
God bless you for being touched and supporting these children
Best wishes to your endeavors too.
Richard
Hi everyone,
After the words of encouragement from John I thought I would put together a short video and a few photos of our visit to Mathare in 2007. Although this is a nearby part of Mathare I think the situation is similar for the children. Am I correct Richard?
Cheers Shaun
Hi Shaun and everyone,
This is a reality of how life in Mathare is.Children look to be fighting for their way out of hard times of life,They look neglected and having no care of the family from which they come.As the video displays and with the pictures shown, then it tells much about the great challenge before us all to extend help of any kind to change these children's future.I think giving them education is an ideal answer.
This is correct Shaun,
Thanks a lot
Richard.
Hi every one,
I hope you are all doing well. I also hope that our long silence is not in vain but rather some work is going on in different aspects of our intended goals. As you may be aware that Patmos Care and Development Centre is working on the vision 2012.Out of our intended goals i.e securing land, desks, learning equipments, posho mill and sponsorship program,we have not as yet got a clear way forward.Shaun and Carol are working extra hours to secure a grant for a posho mill and school equipments.Sharon Hudson on the other hand is working closely with her friend towards getting a few school items.Mary and Ginger have been brainstorming on the sponsorship program. The land idea has not been thought of in great details since it needs much funds. All in all we are hoping that we still need to come up with the way forward towards bringing this vision to success.Success of one task may lead to the success of another one and in the process we may find ourselves helping many children and others in our initiative.
At the moment,we are going through challenges of sustaining a feeding program, meeting the rent and teachers salary costs. This calls for more ideas on how we can come out of this challenges so as to confine the children in our schooling area.I am indeed thankful to all of you for the ideas you have so far made to bring us to where we are now.Let me hope we can bring our vision to reality.
I wish each one of you the best.
Richard.
Hi Richard,
As promised, I am listing below the organisations we have applied to for help with the Posho Mill proposal and also for school equipment. I thought it would be helpful for other neighbours to know who has been contacted so far so that we do not contact the same people twice. Will let you know as soon as we hear anything. We have to apply to as many organisations and potential donors as we can. There will no doubt be lots of negative responses but we must be hopeful that eventually there will be that one positive response which will make all the difference.
