Learning materials for the school

As the school is handling children from a poor background of whom some have lost their parents, learning materials become a big problem purchasing them by themselves.
Neighbours can be of help to them if such materials such as exercise books and text books can be provided. For the exercise books each child in the lower primary requires at least 10 books and 3 pencils to carry on for a full term while the pre-school ones will require 4 books and 3 pencils to carry for a full term. The cost of text books can go up to Kshs 100,000. This can enable us purchase about 5 books per subject per class enough for the classes we have now.The cost of exercise books can go to Kshs 10,000

Hi friends,
This is all about Mathare village and the schoolis running in the heart of this slum area.We have just resumed from the April vacations and now children are back to school for their normal learning exercise. We are happy to have you join us to the call of these demanding work of meeting the needs of these children.
The work at this juncture is doing very well, however much funds are needed to effect this project. The number of children tend to be rising up and this calls for more hands to come together in order to facilitate the project to its good levels of acrhieving the right goals. We are now in dire need of writing materials and other stationeries for the second term's work.As shown above the cost of books and other stationeries are demanding about Kshs 10,000.We remain reqeusting from neighbours to come to this aid to enable our work move on to abetter extend.
Thanks alot,
Richard,
Local Representative of Mathare village.

Richard - I hadn't seen this when I sent money for their 'exercise books' - I thought you were talking about lined paper in books? Is your number correct - 10,000 KES??? That is equal to $125 USD - and we have NO exercise books that cost that much here in the US!! Hopefully you meant 10,000 KES for all the classes???
I forget how much I sent you, but I hope it will cover the next semester.
Regards, Ginger
Hi everyone,
We are happy to let you know about the school supplies we have bought for the school children at Patmos Junior school. This supplies have been bought with the money we received at the beginning of this month from one of the volunteers who was touched to see children trying to perform well in their exams when they don't have enough writing materials. The school supplies which include exercise books, pencils, drawing books, pens, rubbers, crayons, rulers, chalks and geometrical sets are going to boost the children performance as they will make the teacher's work much easier. These supplies are likely to be enough to cover up a full semester for the current number of children we have.We give you our heart felt thanks to this good work.Children will have to smile on receiving these materials at the beginning of the semester. This is great!!!
Thanks a lot,
Richard.
That's awesome news Richard! When great things like this happen, be sure to post them on your news tab so we can feature the news on the front page of Nabuur. It helps create more awareness of your village and may help you find more interested and enthusiastic volunteers to join your team.
All the best-
Jennifer
Hi Jennifer,
This should be a good advice. I am going to so.
Regards,
Richard.
Richard - the picture of the books looks fabulous. Are they still taking them home or do we need to raise money for a school cabinet? I often wonder if the churches in Nairobi ever help the children in the slums? with clothing? bedding? books? possibly even old desks? Has this approach been tried - I'm sure it has, but I thought it was important to inquire. And, have you been able to buy some maize for feeding the children lunch??? Keep up the great work you do :)

Virginia,
Great to this good comment. The work we are doing is going with a lot of appreciation from near and far since it is not easy to manage working with a poor community such as Mathare.Your concern for these poor ones is touching the hearts of many and indeed they are praying for you for God to link you with more others who may come to the rescue of these dear young ones.
Books and other items have alleviated a great burden from poor parents and guardians. No child is now send home to buy any thing except school uniform and shoes remain a great burden to most.
Raising funds for a cabinet will be very good as this will help keep the children's books at school as they don't have even bags to carry their books from.
Yes, i have tried to visit able churches including the M.P for Mathare who is a bishop of a very big congregation and they do donate to such institutions.I have send my food request letter to them and I am still waiting to hear from them so until now children are not having lunch except they will now start getting porridge which I am arranging to purchase flour in a few days. This may take them for this mouth alone.Look at these photos. While some are striving to make their children look more presentable for schooling, others find it hard to afford even a pair of shorts and shirt. In Kenya all school children are supposed to be in school uniform for proper identification as a school child
Let me end here for now.I look forward to hear from you again.
Best wishes from,
Richard.
