It's nice to see you!
Well, we are struggling.... :-) As I wrote earlier, BCC has a piece of land donated by the community, but we must start at least digging there during August/September, otherwise the community takes back the compound. The very first phase is to "save" the land (to that are about 1 000 $ needed) I am working on it as best. The total costs for the whole building are about 50 460 $, but we must buid step by step. We can't do it at once because of lack of funds.

The next urgent phase is building of 1 classroom , 1 laboratory and 1 toiletblock (9 642,47 $). Because the syllabus - a laboratory is absolutely necessary, otherwise will the authorities not accept the education at school as a secondary education. There is already one classroom at BCC for Form 1 but it can't be used without a laboratory. The next phase will be staff room and washing facilities. Ron is working on a funding request. We will upload the whole budget soon.

Further to my posts on the other thread of your village for the Matopeni school, the following ideas for fund-raising could also be examined by you:

Loans
- If the business model of your school shows generation of net profits + all laws of the land are fulfilled + all documents are in order --- you could discuss with your local bank for a loan. Loan instalments with interest will have to be paid back from the profits of the school. This will be the fastest route to achieving your target of fund-raising.

Equity
- If the business model of your school shows generation of net profits, you could look for partners as co-owners who could bring in their share of the input money in proportion to their co-ownership in your school. The profit from the school will be shared among all owners in proportion to their shareholding.

Donations
- if the business model of your school does not show a net profit, donations will be the only option for fund-raising, since you will not be able to access a loan or find co-owners to share the input costs. The time frame is unpredictable in such cases.

Wow you have a chalenge ahead of you! Although knowing how much success you have had in the past I suspect you will get there in the end.

None of my post really fits into the 'creative fundraising activities' in the title, but unless you have lots of good contacts or a very original idea that will get lots of publicity, its hard to raise lots of money that way.

Although that's just my opinion, and others may have some really great ways of doing so :)

Christopher (who posted under the news item) is part of a group that built a secondary school, initially with very little outside support, although they have now made a few contacts around the world who have provided them with a little funding. So it can be done!

Christopher, how did you get the community organised to donate the money and materials for the initial building work?

I am not sure I will be much help to you - I remember looking around a while ago for organisations that might be able to assist Masaka (Christopher's village). Many accept applications for schools, but the majority focus on primary education or vocational training. The fact that you have a particular focus on assisting girls may help you - if that is a big enough part of the programme, maybe some organisations that focus on women/girls would be interested..

Surely you have very creative ideas all the time, yes I have saved the organization list the gave earlier, but thank you very much for these today.

Yes, the challenge is big but the motivation of this work is very big. After meeting the children at the new primary school, I feel that if we can't bild a school for secondary education will the children go back to the streets because the primary education is not enough.
The girls have been a very important part in the project, there is already a girl in class 7 with a 7 months old baby. BCC is one of the few school who allows pregnent girls to join school and also re-join school after births. It is also one of the goals with the secondary school/boarding school.
The community is very vey poor, they can't donate money to the project but they can give their own physical power and work. They helped a lot during the building of the primary school and they will surely help with the secindary school too. The costs for labours can be reduced a lot through them.

We have a local fundraising here in my hometown for saving the land, I hope it will be fixed soon.

Good luck with the fundraiser!

Am wondering if its possible to find ways to make the project more well known in Nairobi (or Kenya as a whole) not just in the Matopeni area.

It sounds like the work they do with getting girls who are pregnant or already have babies back into school is quite unusual there, so may attract support if it becomes better known, especially if it is clear that the local community are very committed to the school.

I understand that people in the local area are not able to give much financial support but there are many organisations (or companies, better-off people etc) who might want to support it if they know about it.

Am wondering if there are any Kenyan neighbours who can help with this?

Thank you very much for your "good luck" wishes, I think we really need it! :-) Yes, I also think that educating of pregnent girls and young mothers is very unusual in Kenya that's why it is very important to marketing it better and make it known also in Kenya. Another thing is the evening school which is also needed very much for youth and adults who can't manage day school because they must work or take care of children.

We will try to ask for support for so many organizations as possible. You have sent me earlier a document about interconnecting bricks,it is very intressant and it could make the building much cheaper. We'll check up it more in details.

Hi Idiko,

Just to let you know that I'm a musician and am working on an idea with some other project members via Nabuur to try and find a way of fundraising through music. I am currently full of creative ideas and am writing songs and recording them. I am hoping to work with other musicians both in the UK Africa and India, with the intention of holding some fundraising and awareness raising and healing concerts. Its an ongoing project and still in the beginning stages but I will keep you updated and would love to try and help your project.
