Ildiko, yes you can vote for it, there is a link that Squidoo has for that. On the right hand side of your lens, there is a section asking if you liked the lens. There you'll see a link saying "nominate it". Actually, there are many ways to help.
I have a guest book where anybody can sign and leave their comments. I also have a list of books from Amazon relating to Kenya. If anybody wants to order a book they can do so from the lens. For each order I get a small amount, which goes to the school(since I have given the PayPal account e mail of the school. I'll add more books as I go along.
Mostly, though web logs are supported by traffic, the number of visits they get. The more visits, the higher ratings. So just by simply "dropping in", you support it.
The link, for anyone who wishes to drop in, is (http://www.squidoo.com/matopeni)
You can also mark it as your favorite, link to it, or spread the word to others. It's our web log, not mine.
So much for that. I've started looking into the sports clubs, I'll keep everybody informed as to what happens.
Greetings from Stephen who sent us pictures of the foundation. After only a week work the foundation is almost finished. Please check pictures! It is so great so see how the building is growing step by step!
Still it will be needed a lot of work and funds for the school, that's why I want to remember you on our GiveMeaning initiative.
Please forward to link to everybody you know or do as Estelle, she has a link to
You asked me to do some work on how we can get some future funding for the school. My view is that we should look at businesses that will produce a revenue stream for the school, rather than having to rely on charitable donations. The enclosed document gives more details on the process that would take us there.
I should add that there is a lot of hard work ahead if we are to bring this to fruition!
Please let me have your thoughts on how and when we move forward with this work.
Thanks for the document, I upload it as a resource. We really need your help. Do you think that you could take responsibility some of the new coming tasks concerning future funding activities? Do you think that you could make a "step" and three tasks below it based of your document? It would be great if you could do that. You have all "know how" we need. What do you think?
I can see that you have already done everything I wrote about in my earlier replay here.
The steps and tasks are very good. But the time is very short. We must have a bit longer time, we don't need any stress yet. We need time to "think" too. We must complete the school building and equipe then . I will have a very tough time in my job now and in April I will travel to Russia again and visit a couple of orphanages there. I would like that Stephen also could see and think about the coming steps and tasks, but he is very busy now with the building. I think it is important to hear his wiew and thoughts, it is him who knows what is possible or not possible for the village people there, what needs or isn't necessary. We must also "run" the building and fundraising NOW. The future is very important and it comes sometimes really soon, much sooner than we think, but we must also complete the school.
I am very greatful for all of your ideas and fantastic work. You have done a very good "paper" again! Thanks! :-D
The news of the foundation being almost built is great! I'll add the photos to the weblog.
I've been trying to find athletes to make donations, not easy. Those that have done so, have their favorite charities, usually larger, well known ones. Even for charity events, the same holds true.
However, as Ron states, we can't just depend on donations, some sort of sustainability must be found.
On another note, I recently read in a magazine here, that a tea company in Kenya helps build schools in the area it's in, as part of it's cooporate responsibility program. Are there any businesses or corporations near Matopeni that we can approach to assist in any way? Well.. just a thought.
"just a thought" :-D a very good one! You always have excellent "just thoughts". I think it could be something for Victoria in Nairobi!
Victoria? Could you search for some businesses or corporations near Matopeni (also within Nairobi) Could you write down a list with their names and maybe postal adress or email adress?
It would be great if you could do that! We could approach them to assist Matopeni.
Just dropping this off as you are talking about finding ways for the school to make money...

Hi guys
Good to see you making so much progress!
Just dropping this off as you are talking about finding ways for the school to make money...
Teach A Man To Fish - vocational training and income generation in schools. Focused on agriculture. and on training for older kids rather than primary education, but some of the docs on their Resources page may be of interest.
http://www.teachamantofish.org.uk/resources.php
Some of the docs are quite big so may take a while to download if you have a slow connection.
There is a much smaller version of their document Beyond Fees: A Guide to Income Generation in Schools at
http://www.nabuur.com/uploads/issues/doc_452e440434ab5.pdf
same info as the original, just without all the pictures.
Apologies if I have posted this here before - I sometimes lose track of what info I have passed to which village!
Mary
Mary,
Good to see you dropping by, and as always with a few pearls of wisdom at exactly the right time. Thank you.
Ron.
