Share your ideas and experience on obtaining computers and starting computer classes for primary school children

Status: In progress

Computers are becoming an essential part of modern life, so we would like to start teaching our children basic computer skills. We have teachers who are able to do that, and we have electricity. But we don't have any computers.

Volunteers:

* Do you have practical experience of setting up a computer room at a school, especially one in a developing country?

* Do you teach computer skills to primary-age children, including those who have no previous computer experience?

* Other than finding computers, what other issues do we need to consider?

* Do you know organisations or companies we could approach about donating computers to the school?

Please share your experience and ideas with us!

I'm quite enthousiastic about the idea, but there are many things to take into account! * I currently work in IT and have done an internship for the leading IT-provider for primary schools in the Netherlands. I have no personal experience in setting up computer rooms in a developing country, however i think i have a good idea of things to keep in mind. * Children usually turn out to be really fast learners, computer wise. Teaching computer skills would be no problem at all. Very soon, presumably, children will know lots more than their non-IT teachers. * This is the most important and most difficult question to answer. In short, the answer is "Many things". You cannot 'just' place a lot of computers in a room, and hope it'll work. Things i can think of right now for example, are: - Stable power supply. Computers absolutely require this, or they'll shut down constantly. This is annoying, and worse: in time destroy the computer's hard drive data, thus corrupting the software. There are solutions to this problem, though. - Networking. Ethernet cables, a router and possibly multiple network switches will be necessary to set up a well functioning network. As an alternative, a wireless network could be set up. However, this is more error-prone. - Internet. Lots of really useful information is available online. Would there be the possibility to set up an internet connection, computers would be far more useful to aid in the teaching process. Apart from acquiring computer skills, students would be able to find many interesting things. However, internet comes with certain dangers, viruses, hackers, etc. - Licensing. Microsoft has programmes for developing countries, however, this should be looked into. As an alternative you could use a Linux Based OS. For example ubuntu has a derivative dedicated to schools (edubuntu). - Spare parts. Computers break down all the time, and it would be a waste not to be able to repair them. Mainly hard disks, power supplies and main boards would be needed. - Software maintenance. Who will be making sure the computers will remain to function for many years? - Hardware maintenance. We live in a fast world. A 5 year-old computer would possibly do the job in a school, but an 8 year old computer won't. Computers require replacement every so many years. * I could look for contact details of the company i did my internship. Please contact me if interested. Also, i'll be reading here.
