The below questions were sent to Sarah, Local Representative of Mityana Village.

Most of these questions are answersed adn give us insight in the local resources and situation.

6. I don’t have buildings they are just temporary shelters one part is made of Iron sheets and another side papyrus

7) Does the community of Mityana plan to build another school building?

7. Yes, but not in future time because they are not well off.
8) We ask this to know if the roof could be suitable for rain water harvesting or if we do need to construct a new roof? 8. In fact it needs to construct because this is not enough to collect water.

9) What is the ground water level? How deep do we need to drill before we reach good water? For constructing a borehole, we need to know how deep the ground water level is in Mityana, can you tell us?

How far is the nearest borehole to the school building? 10.  There are 2 boreholes with a distance of 1 km but they are not working bse they are located in hilly areas and de population of people was more than de water got from de boreholes and de people failed to raise money for repairing it.

12) How much water can one borehole provide? How many people can be provided with drinking water from that same borehole? 12. It is not working anymore
13) How are boreholes constructed locally and using what kind of tools? 13. People are constructing boreholes using manual labour but these shallow bare holes are not durable for deep and durable boreholes we need the help of drilling machine.

5) Which methods are used to catch rainwater? 5) From water spring but it is in small scale whereby people using are more than the resource.
6) Were does drinking water come from? 6) By using local methods like trees, banana plants, water gutters, basins, pots etc
7) What is the known quality from this drinking water ? 7) Fresh water.

9) Should a storage tank be underground or above ground?

10) What are your reasons for the decision. 10) It is easy to repair in case of any damage.
11) Do you have any suggestions on materials to be used? 11) Yes in case of above ground tanks plastic tanks can be used.
12) Is concrete a good solution? 12) Yes it is a good solution because where the tank is going to be placed needs concrete first.
13) Is concrete available in the area (for instance: for possible repair)? 13) Yes it is available.
The surface the storage tank will cover in our plan is 25m³ (5*5*1).
14) Is this a good size with enough capacity?
14) It would be for ten thousand liters and should not be only one because the community will also use that water.
15) If the storage tank is placed underground, is it possible then? 15) No
16) Is it possible to catch the rainwater on the roof from the school? 16) It is not possible because the roof i have is partly locally made out of papyrus.
 17) Is it maybe a better solution to create some sort of big bowl? 17)

20) Do you maybe have some experience with projects like this and the expenses/costs? 20) I happened to meet someone who is selling, he told me that for ten thousand liters should be on order and costs 5m that’s what he told me.

1) What is your impression about the drinking water project we are trying to develop? 1) The water project is to bring a change to entire community mainly to the school
2) What would be your suggested solution for the drinking water and sanitation problem in the school?
Rainwater harvesting or borehole.

(2) To be on safe side it would be a good be idea to have both rain water harvesting and a bore hole bse:
a) We only harvest rain water during rainy season so a bore hole can serve the other side.
3) Information about the land and the existing school building?
What is the size of the compound?

Is it made of glass or you mean grass?
4) The big part of the existing roof is made of papyrus and small part is made of iron sheets

B) The type of well we have is season and in poor conditions and it is used by the school and entire community that’s why we suggest both bore hole and rain water
6) Current rainwater catching facilities?

6) We don’t have any storage tank, but we keep water in small jerry cans of 20 litres, 15 litres and 5 litres.
7) Do you have pictures of the environment?
If you have, can we please have them, so we can use them in our presentation.

9) Is there an useable water well around the school? 9) We have one usable well but with poor quality water and seasonal and is used by both pupils and community.

4) What is the ground water level?

10) Do you have any idea what it would costs to install a good drinking water storage and purification installation for the school?

 De estimate is 12000,000 that is 60,000$
