Food Shortage in Cambodia

Up to 204 families in 3 separate communes are faced with food shortages brought on flooding and in other areas drought.

Families affected are currently living off of the support of neighbors and meager wages provided by employment. Moung Russey LR, Sa Kimsorn was able to visit the Northeast area and found that 3 provinces had experienced substantial flooding resulting in 100 hectres of rice being destroyed, 18 deaths and multiple animals were also killed. Many homes were completely destroyed. 100 people were able to escape the flooding and evacuated the area to higher ground.

In Moung Russey, the residents are in emergency need of support. In the Northwest areas, rice crops have suffered due to drought. The Northeast area was flooded during rainy season along the Mekong River. The women and people with disabilities currently working with the Cambodian Youth Development Center have been particularly vulnerable because the rice plants on their small bits of land were destroyed. Sa Kimsorn reported a critical need to begin restoration efforts immediately to address the needs of these disadvantaged members of the community.

Hi Ben-

Thank you for your kind words. I was speaking with Kimsorn last night and he just got back from visiting the flooded area. He was sharing pictures with me, but unfortunately I was not able to get them to download. I hope to have pictures soon to share with everyone. Based on what I was able to see, the flooding is really bad.

Thank you for your concern-

Jennifer
