Find a computer/laptop for the project.

The project has started on the ground with the planting of the vegetables by 15 women with 90 dependents.
Paddy has use of mobile phone and recently a camera and video recorder has been donated.
Other office equipment would be useful, especially a laptop or computer to report and blog on the progress being made and to keep in touch with the neighbours of Nabitende. Help us find an organisation that might be able to help us.

Hi,
there is an organization called Computer Aid. They donate computers to developing countries. They have an application form on their website.
Paddy, Sinead: Please let me know if this would be an opportunity for Nabitende. Then I will fill in the application form and send it to computer aid and see if they can help us.

hi Jenny,
I used computeraid before to send a computer to David of Kyomya. it did work out as quite expensive but please fill out the form and we will see if it is it worth it. They are quite slow too, if I remember correctly. I will email David and see if he remembers the process,
(off topic: the second website you recommended in the rainwater harvesting look quite good but most of it is Dutch, maybe you could contact them too.)
thanks,
Sinéad
This list is a couple of years old now, put together for Uvira village in Congo who were setting up a computer centre, but its possible that some of the organisations listed might consider providing a single computer. Unfortunately I don't have the time to check them out, but maybe others can?
Mary
Ok, I will do that and see what they can do.
The website of Aqua for All you mean? I thought I pasted the English link...anyway I will contact them as well and keep you all up to date about their answers.
Jenny
hi,
the price of shipping is so prohibitive, Paddy did some local research and found out the price of a used laptop in Kampala is between 750,000sh to 850,000shs
I guess when computeraid and the other NGOs tell us the price of shipment we will know what option is best to fundraise for,
thanks,
Sinéad
Hi,
I am still mailing with Computer Aid. I asked them for an estimation of the shipping costs to Uganda if we only apply for 1 computer. If these costs are higher than buying a new computer in Uganda for €260-350 / USD 360-420 than it is not usefull to apply to them.
I will keep you updated.
Jenny
I received below answer from Computer Aid:
QUOTE
I am unable to provide you with shipping cost for 1 computer to Uganda at the moment but I can say that it would be best to freight it by air.
However, the freight charges (includes cost of shipping, marine insurance and couriering of documents) for 10 computers, which is the minimum no. we are able to arrange shipping for in any case, up to Kampala
is £595. To this, you will need to add the handling charge of £390 for 10 computers.
END QUOTE
Since we only need computer, I think it is the best idea to buy a new computer in Uganda. Here we don't have to take into account shipping costs and the money spend on the computer stays in the country.
What do you think?
Jenny
Hi Jenny,
thanks for the great work, you are right about buying a new computer in Uganda and Rick was able to help out and Paddy travelled to Jinja and bought a good laptop for 1.250.000/= . Hopefully this will help with the communication problems (although power and connection are still issues to be resolved).
When there is power Paddy will be able to log on and he will no longer travel great distances to the internet cafe to find it full or closed.
Paddy also recieved a video recorder from Rick so we may see some videos soon,
thank you everybody for such great work,
Sinéad
Hi everyone,
sorry for not having been online for a while, but I am back now.
Sinead, I read the post from Paddy that he bought a new computer with help from Rick. Which is great! Eventhough we have to raise money for the bikes, I think he made the right decision to buy a brand new computer instead of an old one.
Jenny
All computers operate internally on 12v. Those without electricity use a computer, internally altered, to operate directly from a 12v battery with a solar charger [email for instructions]. A pedal-powered generator can be used.
Hi Ken,
Thanks very much for your care about Nabitende being connected with the rest of the world. We happened to get power in the Sub-county with the rural electrification government program but we have not yet got the machines. There is need to deposit some money to put right the computers before they are sent. I don't have the money to pay for the bill and transport. We could sruggle with the tax but not the others. I appreciate you Ken because you give your ideas to all Nabuur users, may God bless you richly and also He (God) may give men with vision like you.
Paddy.
Hi Ken,
With the computer issue, it is solved but I want for the community if possible.
We had the oppotunity of suppling fruit trees to our members and hopefully with begin to harvest.
I now thought of this issue if we can get support and also ideas, the bee keeping. I thought if we can build 2 blocks in 2 different areas, it would help with the income. Since we don't need a lot of work after construction, it could be a good project especially where members don't have big land for planting, what is your idea! Thanks.
Paddy.
A used computer with dvds is the way to train people.
One does not need "big" land for planting. Using organic, no-till in permanent beds one can double or triple the yields. Do you have my farming dvds? Helping farmers is my true interest.
