Project is being implemented - Phrase one vegetable growing has begun

Status: Finished
Step:
4

Ebenezer Foundation for Rural Development have begun phrase one of the Integrated Sustainable Fruit Farm and Community Agroforestry project. 15 vulnerable hardworking women were selected, have agreed to ongoing training and their vegetable nursery beds are progressing.

This task is for news updates on their farming and to help EFORDE move to next steps of the project, fruit farming and then the agroforestry projects.

Neighbours will be able to ask questions here on the progress and provide support for any sudden problems as well as enjoy the successes the Butabala Co-operative Society may have.

This task will close in 12 months and we will have either success or lessons learnt. This is when EFORDE will write up a report on how the project was handled.

I am including the vegetable proposal on which we got the funding, and the names of the 15 women.

hi,
there have two training weekends so far.

The first weekend the women were giving the seeds and the training. There were divided into 2 groups and a woman in each group was given the responsibility of heading and monitoring the group. This would also be the first problem - these 2 women will need bikes to be able to have easy access around the farms and to help with the training.
(2 bikes are needed as soon as possible, maybe some neighbours can contact the donors in the wikipage)
The second weekend was training on a cooperative. This was a success and the women named their co-operative Butabala Cooperative Society in Nabitende. They also agreed to join NOGAMU - National Organic Movement of Uganda.

more training will definitely follow but here are some photos from the first weekend and as you can see for these hardworking women it was all smiles.

With a motor bike, an assistant and working almost full time at the farm he will have time for this. We need more money for trees. Since they take time to mature it's important to get them planted as soon as possible. Patience is needed to reach the ultimate goal but speed is needed now. Any money invested now will pay off hugely in the future. Maybe Sinead or one of the computer expert neighbors can help to set up a direct donation link. Hullo Paddy
I'm not sure that you got my e-mails. More money has been sent for bikes, a motor bike, the new assistant and trees to start the second phase of the project.
I thought it was was a good idea to lay the foundations for a project that can't fail. The only question is: How BIG, How FAST and how successful.
Nabitende is getting more READS in the Village list than almost any other village. What I think we need is a donation link (like Kabondo). They had an internet fund drive that was successful. If donators have confidence in our plan, hopefully they will want to help out.
Paddy is going to send in regular updates(Posts, Pictures and VIDEOS) of progress being made.
See Kabondo.

Hi Rick

Its great to see all the work going on :)

You are right about Kabondo managing to raise some money online. However, it has taken them most of a year to raise $800, with a lot of publicity e.g. via Facebook and Twitter, so it is not a quick and easy option. They used GiveMeaning, as have many other villages. Some raise a few hundred dollars, many others raise almost nothing. But it doesn't hurt to try providing no one gets their hopes up to far. I would say if you hope to put a project on there, make it for less than $1000 - if its successful you can start another one.

Many disabled people are perfectly able to work, and want to do so, they are often simply not given the option due to attitudes within the community, who assume they are helpless and have to rely on outsiders for everything. That is true here as well as in Uganda.

Hi Ken I agree with you 100% about micro credit. I have heard some Ugandan Local Reps say that micro credit organisations are not always reliable. I don't know if they are going to follow up on this but I hope so. In Kabondo they are setting up their own small scale micro credit scheme - that's what the online fundraising is for (I don't know why they have chosen to do this rather than join an existing one). Others including Kyomya have done the same. Doing it this way requires a very well organised community group who have good financial controls. I believe that ideally all organisations that set up projects that assist families with starting income generating businesses should be doing this in a way that is self-sustaining for the future, and do not require continuing outside financial support. So, instead of giving people things (money, animals, seeds, equipment etc) as a gift, they receive it as a loan. A simple example of this is that if you give a family a piglet, they have to give two back to the organisation when the pig has babies. These are then passed onto other people in the community, and the project can continue to run. The people receiving the loan know that they have to work to pay it back, and the vast majority will do so as they very much want the opportunity to be able to look after their families. No worries, I think I knew what you meant. Hopefully it will be possible for those disabled people who are able to work to be integrated into the main project, although I can understand that may not be practical for all, at least at the beginning, and some may need additional advice and assistance.

Hi Ken

I agree with you 100% about micro credit. I have heard some Ugandan Local Reps say that micro credit organisations are not always reliable. Now there is an organised network of Local Reps in Uganda I have suggested to a couple of LRs that this is something they should research as a group, find the reliable ones.
