The successes and pitfalls of recieving donated tools and equipement from overseas

Status: Finished
Step:

Nabitende is trying to source tools and equipment within Uganda but is also applying to international NGOs.
Therefore we are looking for other neighbours' stories on customs and clearance practices in Uganda or elsewhere:

1. Do you have experience in clearing donated goods from customs?

2. Is it possible for a CBO to obtain an exemption of custom duties? If so, what is the process of obtaining one like?

3. What costs are involved with custom clearing of donated tools (official and unofficial tariffs!)?

please share your experiences here, tell us about the successes and the pitfalls of importing donated goods

Hi Sinead

Try getting in contact with Pelle at Nabuur pelle@nabuur.com and/or with Paul Bulenzi, LR of Jinja Central http://www.nabuur.com/en/village/jinja-central/project
Pelle has sent things to Paul's organisation, as have another group in Holland.

As far as I know, if the goods are for a registered non-profit organisation you should not have to pay customs fees, provided it is clear that it is a donation.

You could try Christopher from Masaka. I think they are registered as a CBO not an NGO and they have received tools etc from a charity here in the UK. So he may know about costs, paperwork etc. Alternatively, is there any chance of linking up with an NGO that is local to Nabitende? I have no idea what the rulse on this would be. hi,
I have been looking into this problem a lot and the best solution is that we ask the donor to send a leter to EFORDE stating that it is a gift, it's specific use within EFORDE and that it is not for resale - this was the lesson learnt from Paul of Jinja Central.
