NAKYERONGOSA VILLAGE GETS A PLAYSCHOOL AND DAYCARE CENTRE FOR CHILDREN

Children have a place of their own!!!!

As Nakyerongosa village coninues on the road to development, many women have resorted to income generating activities so as to be able to care for their households. The various activities being engaged in include operation of food joints, hair saloons, retail shops and market stalls in the nearby town, Kakiri.

As a result one of the community members has started a playschool and day care centre for children aged from 3 to 5 years from Nakyerongosa village. So far there are 25 children who are in the centre. The objective of setting up the centre was to ensure that children of Nakyerongosa village are provided with safe and quality child care; preparation of children for entrance into primary school and provision of a healthy meal and/or snack for the children in the centre.

The activities that are being carried out in the centre include teaching the alphabet, numbers and basic manners. Children also engage in extra curricular activities such as singing and dancing, indoor games, story telling and drawing.

The parents drop off their children in the morning beofre going for work and pick them up again after work. This has been a very big help to the parents (especially mothers) who engage in economic activities and had been hampered due to anxieties associated with leaving their children being inadequately attended to. It has also empowered women to earn more money to spend on educating their children and looking after their families. Each parent pays Uganda shillings 500 per day.

Nakyerongosa village is appealing to Neighbours to help in finding potential donors and friends who can assist in the project. The assistance required is through acquisition of children play materials and education materials. These can include toys and outdoor activity oriented things such as books and any other items that are necessary for the children.

Hi Asuman

You guys are doing a great job, a good example of what a well organised community can achieve!

You can find information on some organisations who may be able to donate books and other items to your playschool, and maybe to schools in the area too, at http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dgs9fnp6_0g5zp8p3n
Most of the book donors on there do not charge for shipping. I know Nabuur villages who have received boks from several of those organisations.

If you are not already a member, you might also want to join the education group http://www.nabuur.com/en/group/education/project as its a good place to meet others working on education-related projects.
