Success story from a water kiosk in Nakyerongosa village

Help the community through construction of more water kiosks

Mr.Katongole Ronald is aged 47 years and a resident of Nansana West 1 Village Zone. He has depended on block making for over 15 years as his source of income. From this income he is able to support his wife, and five children. He earns between 300,000 - 500,000 Uganda shillings monthly. He is the sole water kiosk operator in this area and had this to say when COMASA conducted a follow up visit to his water kiosk.

“I have been a block maker for over 15 years and very few people knew much about me. Ever since I started operating a water kiosk, I have become a popular man. People come to fetch water in large numbers. Before construction of the water kiosk, people in this area used to collect water from a nearby swamp that was contaminated. For those who could afford clean water, they would buy a 20 liter jerry can from water vendors at between 300 - 700 Uganda shillings.

Today, filling a 20 liter jerry can is ten times cheaper than it used to be before the project was realized. People in the village have now nicknamed me “ATANO-ATANO” meaning payment of 50 Uganda shillings. I have also been trained by National Water and Sewerage Corporation in operations and maintenance of the water kiosk system. I have transferred skills and knowledge to my wife who also operates the water kiosk when l am away so as to keep the business running.

The water kiosk has improved the social and economic status of my family and the residents in the area who have access to clean and safe water from the kiosk. We do appreciate the good work being done by COMASA in our area.
