Update on our Poultry Project

The goal of the Nakyerongosa Poultry Project is to improve the welfare of women and families in Nakyerongosa.

This project was a brain of the WorldSchool that helped Nakyerongosa village to develop the project proposal. COMASA provided women with a small starting capital to rear between 15 to 30 birds in their homes. The women decided on either rearing exotic or local chickens. So far the 15 women farmers who benefitted are doing well and some have sold off some chickens. A local chicken costs between 8,000 to 20,000 Uganda shillings depending on the size and season but it also exceeds depending on the prevailing demand.

As part of the project the farmers have been given knowledge and skills in the following areas: use and installation of poultry wire mesh (nets) and where possible permanent poultry structures: Management of both local and improved birds, that is, proper crossbreeding of the locals, feeding, watering, disease and parasite control, construction of poultry structures (poultry houses and local hatcheries), brooder preparations and management and vaccination, that is, how vaccines are collected and used, vaccination calendar and the various drugs used during vaccination period.
