Want to know the background of the people living in Nakyerongosa? Then read the following!
Nakyerongosa parish is a densely populated area and has some infrastructures like 6 schools both private and government ownership of primary, secondary and nursery schools. It has 6 churches, and most of them were built with schools. This parish is surrounded by a big forest which is of great value for the people in terms of medicine, firewood and rainfall formation among others.
The village is comprised of 939 households with a total population of 4,191 people of which 48 are disabled. The village lacks most of the basic services such as electricity, telecommunication facilities and medical infrastructure. Due to unavailability of health care facilities, patients have to walk long distances of over 4 kilometres to seek medical care in Kakiri health centre.
Nakyerongosa parish has 54 water points out of which 16 are constructed or protected and 14 are functional. Consequently, the safe water coverage is 30.9%. The other problem faced by the village is unsafe sanitation practices. 702 households out of the 938 surveyed do not have safe latrines and many people do not practice hand washing. The problem the village wants to solve is unsafe water and sanitation issues which are leading to sanitation related diseases like diarrhea which are so rampant. Such households with unsafe latrines, their latrines have features like; are made of weak logs which have been eaten by termites, have no shelters and hence do not observe privacy. Many of the latrines observed have very big squat holes which cannot be used by young children and during the rainy season. These latrines become so slippery and scare away adults especially the elderly and disabled people from using them. Some households do not have latrines and open defecation is still rampant mainly in the nearby bushes and on the verandas especially young children while the general health environment in these areas is in a very poor state.
Many people do not practice hand washing and there is no presence of hand washing facilities in most of the households. Due to the fact that many people have no access to safe water, ensuring the safe water chain is very difficult. However, unlike the children, the adults’ personal hygiene is good though storage of utensils is not properly done. Many of the households wash their utensils on the ground, and many people do share shelter with their animals.
