Identify a beekeeping expert to ask him/her what is needed for beekeeping

Status: In progress
Step:
1

For getting our beekeeping business started, we think expert advice is needed. The community of Ololosokwan has identified beekeeping to be a very good income generating activity. They are also interested in fair trade for their honey and bee products. Now it is important to know what financial and technical resources are needed for this beekeeping enterprise.

You can support us identifying an expert / several experts in the beekeeping business and ask him/her some indicative figures and technical questions, such as which equipment is needed, how much staff with which qualifications is required, how many bees/bee hives with which criteria should be purchased, practical training manuals on beekeeping etc. If the expert also knows where to find these technical resources and the costs, fine! If not, you can help identifying local and international prices.

The attached document which you can find under "Resources" to this task might help you with the interview guidelines.

The bigger challenge is to find ways to find additional sources of income, of which beekeeing is one solution. For it to succeed, infrastructure is needed. This can be devided into beekeeping specific, and general. I like this intro " We need to take into consideration the resources available" I hope Yannick can provide us with an overview.

Has anybody tried to contact http://www.nabuur.com/modules/news/news_details.php?newsid=102&type=resu...
to see if we can learn from their experiences? While we are at it, maybe other Nabuur projects could benefit from the shared experience and add beekeeping to their income generating challenges.

Cheers

I will be able to provide an overview of the resources available when I know these resources. Can someone with beekeeping basics assist me in outlining the resources necessary, then I will expalin those available in our locality.

Land and labour are resources that for sure are necessary. What are others?

Hi all,

my name is Claudia Vijge and I'm Volunteer Manager at Nabuur.com.
While working I came across a Dutch organsiation called Beesupport. They support small beekeeping projects in Developing countries.

They might be able to give you some advise on how to handle things and support the project. They have some criteria which I think you meet. they have to be translated to English as the site is in Dutch. If you don't have any Dutch Neighbours that can help with that, let me know and I will be able to help with that.

Website: www.beesupport.com
E-mail: beesupport@hotmail.com

Dear Mr Ndoiko,

I have written you personal email regarding working together with Ngorongoro Pastoralist Council on this project but you never replied.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA), has an extention programme support local communities living within the conserved area and neigbouring villages. If you fall within this border, you can speak to NCAA extension officer. However, if you are not within the border still you can get expertise the bee keeping unit of NCAA.

In some area, we African we need to make maximum use of resources we have locally before seeking oversees assistance. Most of staff employeed in Ngorongoro Pastoralist Council are natives Maasai, I will urge you to make use of them.

Neighbours should only concentrated on how to finance the equipment and seeking a reliable market for the said outcome of the project.

Dear Ndoinyo,

One of the requirement identified in the shared work document is hives. I am attaching a document outline sketch drawing for the standard hive. It is my hope that with standard of our carpenter we have in our country, it wont be a problem to make hive based on this sketch.

Also try to invite as many local community to participate in this discussion since neighbours can assist to solve a problem identified by local community themselves. Further more, it will be easier to implement this project if ideas originate from local community.

Dear Karin,

Ololosokwan is very near to Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA). One of the NCAA's objectives is to support the natives of Ngorongoro Conservation Areas Authority. To achieve these, NCAA has employed some experts in Community Issues including bekeeping activities. I therefore advise you to email ncaa_faru@cybernet.co.tz asking contacts for a person dealing with beekeeping.

In case of difficult in obtaining such contacts, let me know I will use other means to get contacts of person dealing with this issue at NCAA.

Yours Sincerely

We seem to have a bit of bad luck this time. I have been in contact with NCAA - Ngorongoro about the bee keeping project that Vincent had refered to me but the expert who helepd put that project into life has long retired. However, the project is functioning very well. I had communicated to the ministry but again the resposnsble person is admitted in hopsital.

Bad luck, but will keep trying: let us all try!
