On-site volunteers - Share your advice, and list organisations that could send volunteers to Omiito

As well as tourists, several groups in the Omiito area would like to receive on-site volunteers. These include three schools, a health centre, a microfinance organisation and IDA, the organisation coordinating the coomunity tourism project.
More details of the types of volunteers required can be found in this document.
Have you worked as an on-site volunteer?
Are you part of a local community group that has received volunteers?
Do you work for an organisation that sends volunteers to projects in developing countries?
If so, we would like to hear your experiences. What advice do you have to offer about what does, and what does not, make a successful volunteer assignment, and the best ways to find suitable volunteers.
We are also looking for organisations that send volunteers to projects in Uganda, especially those that are looking for new partner groups who want volunteers. As well as posting details here, please add them to the associated Shared Work Document.

Dear neighbours,
I have found two organizations that operate volunteer work camps:
- Global Crossroad (http://www.globalcrossroad.com)
- SCI (http://www.ongsci.org)
I have already introduced them in the wiki.
Greetings,
Elsa.

You are just GREAT!!
I just came back from holidays and I found a long list of organizations dealing with workcamps :-)
I have updated the wiki with all your posts. Thank you very much for all your contribution.
Only 37 organization more and we can close this item!
Elsa.
Here's another work camp organization active in Uganda:
Volunteering Access Network places volunteers to Kenya and Uganda local CBOs and NGOs. There is room for new openings. Projects are practical hands-on work, such as building school classrooms, working with orphaned children, teaching or helping the development of a local initiative.

volunteers.info@gmail.com
The Uganda Pioneer's Association located in Kampala, Uganda looks like a valuable partner. They link Uganda communities with many international work camp organizations. They can explain what the community must set up for the volunteers such as food, accomodation, work and social activities. They also arrange the listing for the work camp with various international agencies.

Thank you Marge, very interesting!
Stella, as the last two organisations are in Uganda, maybe it is easy for you to get in direct contact with them. Just let us know if you have the time to do it.
Greetings,
Elsa.
This task was originally about finding organisations that organise work camps.
As the focus has now changed to finding individual volunteers for schools, health centres and other organisations in the area Ihave updated the description to reflect this.
I decided to keep this task open instead of creating a new one, as some of the information found before may still be relevant.

I sent details of these to Stella when I first became facilitator. Thought I should post them here too.
Stella, please let us know whether you decided to contact any of them and, if so, how you got on?
Fairground Sessions http://www.fairgroundsessions.nl/index.php?page=about-fgs
That page is in English, but rest of site is in Dutch.
"1. Sustainable tourism / voluntourism; FGS offers two to three week sustainable holidays and custom made trips for individuals and groups, where people get the chance to discover a country in an interactive way by helping small scale local development projects through volunteer work. The work varies per country and project, but always tries to get people from different worlds to connect and learn from one another."
They have sent volunteers to Nabuur projects including Jinja Central.
Voluntary Projects overseas
http://www.voluntaryprojectsoverseas.org
"We've got some great volunteering opportunities worldwide: building homes, bringing fresh water to communities, conservation, mentoring children, social care and support, teaching, medical placements, community development and care."
Small non-profit volunteer agency. Already send volunteers to Uganda.
They are looking for new project partners http://www.voluntaryprojectsoverseas.org/index.php?/get_in_touch/
Global Volunteers
http://www.globalvolunteers.org/index.html
"Join our non-profit network of long-term, ethical service on a volunteer vacation abroad or a USA volunteer program. Live and work with local people on life-affirming service programs for one, two or three weeks. Extended stay options up to 24 weeks. We support some 100 host communities in 21 countries year-around through short-term volunteer teams, direct project funding and child sponsorships."
http://www.globalvolunteers.org/organization/partnershipcriteria.asp
gives details of how to apply to become a partner.
NGO Abroad
http://ngoabroad.com/
They are a small agency who tailor trips to the needs of individuals and the organisations they are visiting, so could be a source of volunteers with particular skills. Do not give any details of how to partner, but I know that at least one other Nabuur project has had a volunteer from them.
AVIF
http://justfriends.moonfruit.com/
http://avifvolunteers.blogspot.com/
"AVIF is an innovative online charity, assisting with sustainable development via online & onsite volunteering in rural Kenya, East Africa. Being virtual means negligible administration costs for worldwide impact. We believe in efficiency, honesty and transparency."
They are aware of the existence of Nabuur, working with some Kenyan villages.
Although they only work in Kenya, they may be able to give some good advice about the most effective way to use and attract volunteers, or know similar groups who send volunteers to Uganda.
Info added to the wiki.
Mary
Hi Stella
Pelle, a member of Nabuur staff, posted this to the Facilitator Group yesterday. I am told it has also been posted to the Local Rep village, and that you should receive an email from Nabuur about it soon as well.

Dear all,
NABUUR is starting to collaborate with Different Africa Connection (www.differentafricaconnection.nl).
DAC is specialised in intermediation of volunteers from the Netherlands to projects in Uganda.
If your project could benefit from having onsite volunteers, please discuss with your Local Rep and feel free to get in touch with Dominique. She's looking forward to visit some NABUUR projects!!
I've copied the email she sent me below.
Pelle

Dear Sir, Madame,
Is your project looking for a suitable volunteer to help your team with executing your goals and ideas for the Uganda society in 2009? Different Africa Connection can help! We are specialised in intermediation of enthusiastic and educated volunteers from the Netherlands to projects in Uganda.
We try to create the perfect match by looking at persons working history and educational background. We do personal interviews to make sure the one fits your requirements. With the projects in Uganda we make sure that the guidance of the volunteer is executed according to plan. Our work is free of charge for the NGO's in Uganda.
Please read the attachment for more specific information.
I will be in Uganda from the 24th of January till the 28th of February 2009. I would be very interested in visiting your organisation to see whether we can work together.
Warme groet / Kindest Regards,
Dominique Cordier

Document http://www.nabuur.com/files/attach/2009/01/task/Different%20Africa%20Con... gives more information.
The English version of their website is http://www.differentafricaconnection.nl/index.php?lang=english
This could be a good way of getting some longer-stay skilled volunteers on site to assist with various IDA projects.
As Dominique visits before making a decision on whether they can send volunteers, it would also be a good opportunity for community members to talk to someone who could give advice on how volunteers can help, what they would expect from you etc.
Mary
Hi to all,
Happy new year to you all.
I have been communicating to other CBOs around and most of them are intrested of volunteers but depending on the conditions to be applied.
I have also reported their requests to the Lira NGO Forum who is part of linking agent of for both funds, government programs and some volunteers if they are needed for CBOs. As a Local Rep of Acoke, i can confirmed to Nabuur that volunteers are needed and if they can get more i will be welcoming them basing on their terms and conditions because this region(Northern Uganda) of ours needs alot of consultations in the field of Capacity buliding, getting funds for the organisation, introducing local community to the international levels, Educational activities, Social works, Computer skills, HIV/AIDS which is very common due to war which has been going on for the last twenty years and many others.
Since DAC representative will be in Uganda by 24th Jan 2009, i do request them to reach Nothern Uganda especially Lira where Acoke is operating currently. i hope they will reach our office and we discuss many issues
DAC are welcome to Anai-Acoke
Best wishes as we starts new running
Below is the attachment of Acoke's temporal store.
Sabbath
Hi Sabbath
If you are interested in receiving volunteers for Acoke or any other projects in Lira, contact DAC and see what they say.
And you should probably post your progress updates directly to Nabuur Acoke village!
I know you had outside volunteers at the computer centre. What advice would you give to Stella about finding good sources of volunteers, and about the things that they were able to assist with?
Mary
