In this thread, Bart Derks and Michiel den Uijl will post all updates on the progress of the Worldschool assignment concerning Omiito.
As of 08/02/'10, the project is finished. Both the full version and the printer-friendly version have been uploaded. Redundant documents, such as the progress logs, have been deleted.
We have ended our activities on this site and the Omiito Project Files have been deleted. If you would like to read the assignment, click on the files below. You need Adobe Acrobat Reader to read them.
You may download, distribute and utilise both versions, but you may not amend the text without consulting us first.

Hello Bart and Michiel,
We, Martijn and Robbert, are also working on the same assignment. Our plan is to add you both as a friend on Nabuur. Also we've sent an email to your teacher to ask for your email adresses. However now that we've found you on Nabuur that is no longer necessary.
We have a question for you: How do you open a thread like this one? We have not found out yet :).

A few weeks ago we sent a list of questions to the Local Representative, but we have not received a reply since then. Seeing as we cannot get started on this assignment without the answers to these questions, I post them here and hope that these can be answered to the best of each's ailities.
Capacity
1. How many inhabitants does Omiito have?
2. How many people are unemployed in Omiito and can work in the tourism industry?
3. How many people are literate in Omiito?
4. What natural resources does Omiito have to build facilities for tourists?
5. Does Omiito have many ‘skilled workers’, such as artisans and craftsmen?
6. How many tourists do you think Omiito can house at the same time? Is a steady food and fresh water supply available?
7. Do the people of Omiito speak English or an other major language?
Geography
1. What are the natural surroundings of Omiito? Are there lakes (Lake Bisima?) or mountains nearby?
2. If so, are the lakes suitable for swimming, or are the lakes too polluted?
3. Can you give us a map of Omiito and its surroundings?
4. How far is Omiito located from major towns and cities in the region (in hours and kilometers/miles)?
5. How far is Omiito located from (in hours and kilometers/miles):
a. Kampala, Entebbe and Lake Victoria
b. Nairobi
c. Mwanza
d. Mount Elgon National Park
6. Is there a good road connection between these places and Omiito?
7. Are there many other facilities for tourists that compete with Omiito in the region?
8. Are there many other communities around Omiito?
9. What kind of scenery/geography is relatively unique in the region that can be seen in Omiito?
Economy
1. How much money can the Omiito community invest in their tourism industry?
2. How much money does the community need to make from tourism?
3. Does the district/state/province and/or Ugandan government provide grants to activities like community-based tourism? If so, how much?
Law and government
1. Who is in charge of the community, and what is his/her function?
2. Is the community of Omiito autonomous, or is it governed by the district/state/province?
3. Do the people of the Omiito pay income tax to the district/state/province?
4. Does economic activity like the tourism sector/industry need to be registered at an institute of commerce, like this one: http://www.kvk.nl/english/aboutus/default.asp?
5. Does Omiito need to keep an account of income, expenditure and profit for the institute of commerce, tax administration, district/state/province or national government?
6. What kinds of tourism does the Ugandan law allow? Do the people of Omiito need special licenses for certain tourist activities?
7. Are there any other possible laws that may obstruct tourism in Omiito?
8. Is there a government program (local or national) that tries to stimulate economic activity in the region around Omiito?
Current state of affairs
1. How many tourists does Omiito receive on a yearly basis at the moment?
2. Is the amount of tourists enough to be a major contribution to the local economy?
3. Does Omiito work together with neighbouring communities to stimulate tourism?
4. What is the outside image of Omiito?
5. How does Omiito promote its tourism at the moment?
6. What are the activities or highlights for tourists at the moment?
Correct and elaborate answers are vital to the progression and validity of our project, and the sooner we have answers, the better our report will be.

First, thank you for the efforts. I am yet to read the files you have uploaded and respond accordingly however, specifically on the cover page...I find it a reflection of your creativity and it is attractive too.
Like I said, the information sought shall be provided. We shall send it after the festive season ie the first week of January 2010.
About your schedule being tight at some point, it is fine by us. We understand- schedule can many times get tight.

Thank you for your reply. We have two weeks of holiday at the moment, so we can speed up our progress. Most of the trivial things, like the personal commitments and the like, have been done and we can finally work on the research question, which you will find in the Files. Please do note, however, that I have taken some liberties and I have not been able to discuss progress this week with Bart, so he still needs to give his consent. That said, I am confident he will agree with this week's progress.
It is good to know when the information is available. In the mean time, we will work with the provisional information we can find on the internet. Unfortunately we have not been able to find a distance table and Google Maps, Google Earth and ViaMichelin do not work with the African continent.
As for now, the schedule is tight but not unbearable.
Oh, and don't take offense, but I have one little remark: my surname is "Den Uijl" instead of "Uijl", "den" being the seventeenth-century Dutch equivalent of "the" ("de" in modern Dutch).

Also, I am not sure you got this in your inbox as it seemed to be bouncing back so thought to post it (question and response) here.
The Tourist Police are those personel that shall be hired to enhance security services irrespective of the prevailing peace in the community.Omiito already has got local police in place, so some of these will be recruited to form the tourist police. Its something we thought important to include during the course of discussions with the neighbors. I hope this clarifies it.

Dear Mrs. Akiteng,
I have read most of the documentation on Nabuur and it proved to be very useful thus far. However, I have a question about one issue. In the 'what has been done'-document (full title: 'Omiito village, Kapir sub-county, Ngora county, Kumi district - List of activities'), I came across a 'source of Tourist Police'' (p.2). What does this 'Tourist Police' mean? Does this police force specifically handles crimes against tourists, crimes committed by tourists or do they inspect the quality of the goods and services for the tourists? Thank you in advance for your time and efforts.
