1.Introduction“ Sankhuwasabha” the name of one of the hilly districts of Nepal is situated in the eastern development region. The district is named after Sankhuwa and Sabhaya two big streams of the district. These tow streams are famous for delicious fish. Mt. Makalu (8463 meter), the fifth highest mountain in the world, is situated in the northern part of district. The mountain is considered as one of the most beautiful in the world. It dominates the northern horizon.
The total area of district is 3468.18 square kilometer. The district is famous for Aarun Valley (457 metre, the lowest land in the world. Makalu Barun National park and Buffer Zone area (1500 km2 ) was established in 1992 by the Makalu Barun Conservation Project and Department of National park and Wild Life Conservation of the Government of Nepal.
2. Political division: The district has been divided 33 Village Development committees and one municipality and two constituencies and 11 regions. Khandbari (1036 metre) which is on the way to Mt. Makalu Base Camp is the headquarter of the district. The district can be reached from Kathmandu in 45 minutes by plane.
3.Population: According to the census of the report of 2001A .D. the total population of the district is 159203. There are Male 77853 and Female 81350. The total household of the district is 30766.The average family members is 5.17 and annual population growth rate is 1.15%. The population consists of 65% ethnic groups and 35% others. Among the ethnic group 22.44% Rai 19.435 Kshetries. 9.45% Tamang and 6.58% Brahmans. The density of population is 46 per square kilometer.. Towns are mote densely populated the hilly regions.
4.Occupation The district is based on the agriculture. 77.62% the population is based on the farming. The farmers produce paddy, maize, millet, potatoes, wheat, cardamom etc. Some of the educated people are employed in other sector such as teaching, official works, business etc. Some Nepali porters and guides have a job in the tourism sector. Local people have been benefited from tourists in various ways.
5.Arts and crafts. The people of this area have their own different cultures and tradition . They follow different religions. Dashain and and Tihar are the two main festival of the people. They celebrate the festivals splendidly by wearing new clothes and eating delicious dishes. The people of the district are honest and laborious. Allo clothes and blankets made of wool, furniture are famous cottage industries of the district. Chainpur is famous for beautiful metal utensils
6. Tourist Area: The district is famous for natural beauty, and unique wonders. We can find 19 kinds of bamboos, 25 kinds’ rhododendrons. 67 kinds of herbs, 440 kinds of birds, 150 kinds of butterflies, and 50 kinds of mamels in the district. Because natural diversity the district has been a popular place for tourist's attraction. Every year about 200 tourists from different countries in the world come to trek from Tumlingtar to Mt. Makalu Base camp. It is twelve days’ trekking from Tumbling to Mt. Makalu Base Camp. They stay in their camp and in the hotels.
Arun river is the main river of the district Barun river is the main tributary river of the the Arun river. The other beautiful places of the district are Sabah Pokhari Matsya Pokhari Dut Pokhari Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Area, Chichila, Rododendrone conservation area,qarun Valley. The most important religious paces are Manakamana Temple, Siddha Pokhari, Sabah Pokhari, Khempalung, Sidhkali temple etc
7.Herbal production and collection: Sankhuwasabah has become one of fertile land for the production of big cardamom, Rudrakshya, Yarsagumba. Allo Cltothes, and other 67 different kinds of herbs. Every year a large quantity of herbs, Big cardamom (1050 Metric tons) and Yrasa Gumba has been exporting to India and other countries. Because of various reason farmers of Sankhuwasaba have not been able to receive a proper price of their production and herbs they have collected.
8.Main business centre: The main business centre of the district are Khandbari Bazaar, Chainpur Bazaar, Barqabise Bazaar, Manebhangyang, Tumlingtar, Kimmathanka, Kharang, Seduwa, etc.
9. Development works. There are 358 schools, four college, and 43 health institutions. 30.1% people use electricity, 1023 customers use telephone. The totals length of the road is 256 kilometer. 15.61% household use toilet.
