Define the tourism project
Status:

Step:
1
Arun Valley Concern Center would like to support tourism efforts throughout the Sankhuwashbha district of Nepal and draw more tourists into the region. In order to help us establish a clear direction forward, we need a good project definition.
What do we want to offer in terms of support to existing tourism agencies?
What support can we offer to the local community to allow them to benefit from the tourists that come through the area?

I have some ideas on torusim . Those who areinterested please writewith details oflocation, climaticcondition, availableinfrastructurei.e, electricity, roadnetwork, telephone etc.So thatIcan think &give themideas.
Hi Chandan,
Most of the information that you are requesting is located on the background page of the village. If you click on the background tab it will take you there. If you have questions after reading through it, please post here and Tejanath and I can respond.

Chandan Nandi
Tejanath-
I think that Lotte offered up some excellent suggestions on the WIKI page in Step 3 that would be a big help to you in working toward gathering the information you need to present and helping you define the project as a whole. Please make sure you take a look at her suggestions and then maybe you can use it as a guide to work from.
What do you think?
Jennifer
Dear Jennifer
I have found she has provided a very good suggestion.
I would like to extend my lots of thanks to her.
Now i have bee reading it. I will take it as a guidelines to develop the guidelines.
Thanks
Tejanath
I did write a plan to make working on the tourism project easier. Feel free to give other/better/more suggestions!

Proposal to promote tourism in Sankhuwasabha
Goal:
Promote tourism within Sankhuwasabha by supporting existing organizations.
RESOURCES FOR TRAVELLERS
Step 1. What do you want to offer?
Develop a clear vision about what you want to offer.
How?
I think it’s really important that the community has a clear vision about what they want to offer tourist. A luxurious vacation or a rural traditional experience. Different resources are needed for different visions. The community of Sankhuwasabha needs to have a meeting and develop a clear vision on tourism. The Nabuur volunteers can give feedback on this vision.
Step 2. What are the existing possibilities for tourism in the community?
Research of existing possibilities for tourism.
- Nature
- Trekking
- Tours
- Sights
- Food
- Accommodation
- Volunteering
- Services (Money/Police/hospital/internet)
- Transport
- Excursions
How?
We need to have al list with al the tourism possibilities in the community. I think this needs to be done by the local community. Because I think if there are local initiatives for tourism the Nabuur volunteers can’t find them on the internet. They can use the ideas posted on the Nabuur villages website as guidelines for their research.
Step 3 Do we need more resources for travellers?
Are there enough resources for travellers, or do we need to develop more facilities?
- Is there enough accommodation?
- Are there enough activities for tourists?
- Are there possibilities to develop other ways/ more ways to engage the local community in tourism?
How?
Nabuur volunteers can reed the research from step 2 and give feedback on it. They can also help thinking about new/other/more options to develop tourism.
Step 4 How to develop more resources for travellers?
If we find out there need to be more or other resources for travellers we need to think about how to develop these resources. Like local tours, accommodation, working together with travel or trekking agencies etc.
How?
Nabuur volunteers can give ideas and tips on how to develop more resources. The community needs to look if it’s possible to implement them and what resources they will need to develop them.
Step 5 The development of new resources for travellers
How?
The community can develop new resources, Nabuur volunteers can give feedback/ tips on questions from the community about de development.
PROMOTION
Step 1
Developing a website
How?
There already exists a website http://www.sankhuwasabha.com/ but it’s not finished yet. The website needs to be focused more on the tourism project and the information needs to be presented in a more attractive and easier to navigate way. The website needs to be up-dated al the time so this task will be an ongoing business.
Step 2
Try to work together with existing tourist promotion businesses in Nepal
How?
Research existing travel agencies/ tourist information services in Nepal and find out if they are interested in working together/ promote the community. The community and Nabuur volunteers can work together in researching this options.
Step 3
Develop a flyer and distribute the flyer
How?
Nabuur volunteers and the community of Sankhuwasabha can work together in developing a flyer/ leaflet for promotional activities. The flyers need to be distributed to places where a lot of travelers are going in Nepal.
Step 4
Research possibilities to get information about the community on other travel websites and/or travel guides.
How?
Nabuur volunteers and the community of Sankhuwasabha can work together in this research.
Lotte you are a total gem! Thank you so much for this. I will make sure Tejanath sees it and if he agrees maybe we can structure tasks around your plan (although some already fit into it).
I think the first point is very critical-what is the vision? and what do you want to offer? This is where I feel the project is currently lacking at the moment. We talked about that a little bit today and the discussion was very focused on developing the website, which i think has a small part in the overall picture, but really doesn't show the entire scope of what a project like this entails.
Thanks again :)
Jennifer
Hi jennifer and other neighbours,
Nice to hear that you can work with my plan. I also think it's important to develop a vision first. We need to know in detail what the community wants to offer travellers , then we can help them developing it. I think it's not possible to develop the website further if we don't know what they want, because then we don't now what we can offer the travellers. And I think it's also important to help developing the tourism busines in Sankhuwashaba. At the moment I don't know if there is enough on offer for travelers. So even if we have a good website, travellers maybe won't come because there is not enough accomodation/possibility to go on tours/trekkings etc. Or they don't know what they can expect, because it's not clear what kind of experience we offer. I'm curious about the opinion of Tejanath about developing a vision on tourism first.
Warm regards,
Lotte
Lotte-I couldn't agree more. Tejanath and I started to talk about this on Sunday. Tejanath maybe you can speak more about what Arun Valley Concern Centre's vision is for this project.
Tejanath this might be a helpful resource for your group to use when discussing how you would like the project to evolve:

Tejanath
Dear Lotty
I have been very grateful to you. You have provided me a very good suggestions.I have been thinking about how to include you your suggestions in the site.
Now I am very happy to tell you all the i have known about how to edit the site by living in khandbari.
Now can include and remove any information here.
Tejanath
Hi everyone-
Tejanath and I spoke yesterday for quite some time about the project. The local community remains very invested in further development of the website (www.makaluaruntreks.com). We talked a lot about the website being a tool for marketing versus the entire focus of the project. I explained that right now I feel the focus is a bit like putting "the cart before the horse." Tejanath proposed first developing the website and then coming up with a plan for approaching tourism. I explained to him that it should actually be the other way around.
The local community has very little experience promoting tourism. The website is new for them and presents an exciting development in their community-something they have put a lot of time and effort in developing. The local people have been very supportive of their efforts to do this, so I do understand the desire to "make the website the best that it can be" as Tejanath told me yesterday. One of our volunteers, Andrew, is presently in Nepal and will be going to see Tejanath on Wednesday. Tejanath asked for time to talk with Andrew and has waited to present the website to the VIP's of the area until Andrew arrives.
That being said, Tejanath did give some thought to my "cart before the horse" discussion. One of the things that he said to me was that because the community has so little experience in the tourism arena, they need to learn more about the possibilities that exist for sustainable, eco-friendly tourism in order to develop it properly. Talking with the local community about what other people are doing and the possibilities that exist so that they can evaluate the best options for promoting tourism in Sankhuwasabha is something that they need from us.
I located this Sustainable Tourism Gateway on the Global Development Research website today:
http://www.gdrc.org/uem/eco-tour/eco-tour.html
Tejanath-I think it is a good place to start to learn more about the entire concept of eco-tourism. It has a lot of recommendations, information sheets, tools, checklists and strategies that I think you and your group can benefit from reading. I also think that it will help guide you in following some of the recommendations the group here at Nabuur have made so far.
Kind regards-
Jennifer
