Define the tourism project

Arun Valley Concern Center would like to support tourism efforts throughout the Sankhuwashbha district of Nepal and draw more tourists into the region. In order to help us establish a clear direction forward, we need a good project definition.
What do we want to offer in terms of support to existing tourism agencies?
What support can we offer to the local community to allow them to benefit from the tourists that come through the area?

Hi Tejanath,
you can develop several different tourist packages, which will appeal to different kinds of tourists. For example the adventourous tourist, the cultural tourist, the voluntourist, the pilgrim etc. Yet, as Carolyn already mentioned, each package might include accommodation, transport, lunch, but even this depends on the type of tourist you aim for with each package.
On the Sankhuwasabha website you can already distinguish 4 or 5 ideas for a tourist package. You can also combine some of them for example: Cultural Diversity and Historical Sites for the Cultural Heritage seeker.
I will have some more thoughts about this and will let you know next week.
Good luck with Susmita's college preparation!
Best wishes,
Jenny
Dear Jenny
Thanks for your advise. Now we are doing our work. I look for forward to more advise from you in the future.
Tejanath
Tejanath-
Are you back from Kathmandu? If so, when can we chat? I'd like to get an update if the committee is now in place and working on developing the project so we can better define tasks here.
I know our team of volunteers is eager to get to work! :)
Let me know-
Jennifer
Hello,
I have been thinking about tourism packages. Here are several examples:
- One day trips including lunch and transport (for example: visiting pilgrimage sights and a historical sights that are situated close together, having lunch with local people, using a local taxidriver for transport)
- 2 days, 1 night trips including lunch, dinner, breakfast, transport and accommodation (at a homestay?)
- Multiple days - including food, transport and accommodation (for example: trekking or visiting Kampalung Cave - as I read from the website it is 2 days walking (is there anything to see or to do on the way to the cave?), dinner, overnight stay and breakfast with a local family, visit the cave, walking back 2 days, maybe organize another activity on the way back, again stay overnight with a local family).
Each trip must have a name/title like "Hiking tour to Kampalung Cave" or "Nepal Cultural Tour".
I agree with Leutele that the local community must benefit from the tourists. They also are the ones that can give an extra dimension to a visit for tourists by cooking a local dish, performing a local dance or ritual etc.
Please let me know what you think.
Jenny
Hi Jenny,
great work! tourism packages would be a great opportunity to attract tourists. When the packages are developed further we also need to think about a way to promote them. To make the most profit for the community it would be great if the whole project can be executed by the locals. Maybe we need a touropparator in the big city to promote and sell our tours (would cost some of the money but I think it would be a good way to promote the business.

Jenny and Lotte-
Thanks for your feedback. Things are still moving slowly on the ground.
I am not sure if you are following the news about the political situation in Nepal, but this has me concerned. I hope they are able to work out the problems and stabilize their government to avoid falling into conflict again. This may have a big impact or no impact at all on the tourism project, but we'll have to see how things unfold.
Tejanath said that he had a good trip while in Kathmandu and was able to meet with people who can help them. They were very supportive and offered to help promote the area. The last we spoke, a few weeks ago, the new tourism committee still needed to be formed.
So as far as I know, things are still a little up in the air. As soon as we get more clarification, I really hope to be able to work out more specific tasks and get the ball rolling.
Jennifer
Dear all,
As some of you know by now, due to work and relocation issues, Jennifer Wells had to step down from facilitating. She'll be greatly missed, and we appreciate all the efforts she has put in with the project.
Best of luck Jennifer, and we hope to see you online in the near future!
In the meantime, we'll recruit for a new facilitator. Will keep you updated.

Dear all neighbors
Namste!
It is my pleasure to inform you that a tourism interaction program was arranged last Friday at District Development Committee Hall Khandbari among VIPs of the district and the tourism stakeholders. The main objective of the program was to provide a guideline to the District tourism coordination committee (DTCC) Sankhuwasabha. Mr. Andrew Blake one of the NABUUR volunteers from UK facilitated the program. The DTCC also decided to do the following activities in the district.
1. Identifying two additional trekking routes apart from trekking to Mt Makalu Base camp from Tumbling tar
2. Publishing tourism by including the tourism business.
3. Arrange trainings for the cook, trekking guide, porters etc.
4. Establishment of the Information centre.
5. Conduction of the tourism awareness program to create friendly environment for the tourists.
The program was successful to provide clear guidelines to the committee. I would like to share this news to you all also hope to have some suggestions in this regard.
Best wishes.
